The Setup It was late and we were traveling through NS on our tour of NS. Our Airbnb host recommended it as it was a local staple and open late (3pm-3am). The Food I'm American, and one thing I've noticed about Canada is that there are far fewer preservatives and fillers in the food. That carried over here as well. The pepperoni was flavor and not overly salted. Someone else here said it tasted weird, but I would just say that it was t super salty and not too spicy. It was mild and flavorful. It hung out with tasty bacon and mushrooms as well and made a wonderful collaboration of flavor. The bassist was a bright tomato sauce that lightened the mood. We also got some Donair pizza, a local provincial treat! It was so interesting and we both liked it. It was like shawarma/gyro meat that was flavor and tender and paired with an unexpectedly sweet flavor. With that bright sweetness against backdrop of savory fresh local cheese, it was a hit for me! The Staff I mean, we're in Nova Scotia, isn't everyone kind? We chatted with three different folks after midnight and all were friendly and engaging. Got to even speak with Mike the owner - a man genuinely passionate about his craft. The Ambience It's got that classic NY pizza feel where the owner has pictures with all sorts of celebrities and people pose with The Wheel pizza boxes all over the world. I went to St. Francis Xavier University ("X") in Antigonish and graduated in 1983. I lived in residence my first two years and they didn't feed us on the weekends. As a poor student, I didn't have a lot of money. Pretty well every Sunday we would have supper at the Wheel. They took cheques and a small cheese and pepperoni pizza only cost $4. Gord has heard me talk about the Wheel and wanted to try it so we went there for supper tonight. It hasn't changed a bit ... well, except for the prices. We ordered a large pizza ... pepperoni and bacon on the whole thing, mushrooms on Gord's half and fresh tomatoes on my half. Yum-mee! It was delicious! Before heading out to Antigonish for a wedding, we were told beforehand that hitting up The Wheel is a must if we were ever in the area. We stayed at St.FX so on our way back into town, we gave The Wheel a call so our food could be delivered as soon as we arrived (they said it'd be about 20 mins or so). Unfortunately, it was closer to 50 mins when our donair pizza and garlic fingers arrived. Luckily we weren't too hangry at that point and we were able to live the university life like the students do by eating late night pizza in our dorm rooms with a group of friends lol The donair pizza was so so, but the garlic fingers were really good and I would recommend those for sure. read more

The wait was a while, because it was a Friday evening, and I didn't call ahead. there were people coming in nonstop, so lots to watch while we waited. The shop itself is a bit of a hot mess, but in a great way. Finally, ours was ready. sooo good. So nice to get out of Halifax, where all the pizza tastes the same, as all the shops must get their blah sauce from the same supplier, and compete to see who can get away with the least topings and cheese. Eating in at The Wheel can be hit or miss; with limited seating, long lines, and pizza slices produced for the masses that can be expected. The individual slices themselves are big, smothered in cheese and grease, and a little pricey at 4 dollars. The atmosphere ranges from quiet during the afternoon hours, to crazy when the drunken students wander in after the bar closes on the weekends. The best experiences I've had with the wheel food has been through take out and delivery. My food arrived quickly, and was much better than what you wait in line for in the establishment. A favorite takeout combo is the "Athlete Special"; lasagna and garlic cheese bread for 7$. We have heard so much about this place that we finally tried it back in March of 1999 for the first time and anytime I am picking up a pizza in Antigonish it will be at the wheel, I love the Hawaiian pizza but add a couple of extra items like Mushroom and 1/2 onion (only for the hubby). If the hubby ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. Now There is absolutely nothing wrong with their food, but I think the cheese must be a little too rich for my stomach because it does get upset very easily. We buy a large and it lasts us a couple of days, so it's great I always know what I'm having for lunch the next day also...I know they are as busy as Heck there but hope that the employees are treated well and paid well for all of the work that they do put into every dish they make......couldn't ask for better..... The Wheel is an Antigonish institution - just look at the "wall of fame" when you enter the restaurant and it will tell you that if you have any allegiance to Antigonish then you have an allegiance to Wheel pizza as well. Having married an Antigonisher it was only a matter of time before I was initiated with pizza from The Wheel and I have to be completely honest - I was less than impressed. Here's why...too much cheese. Too much cheese?!? *gasp* Is there such a thing, you ask. YES. Now I love cheese, especially creamy Saputo as much as the next pizza lover but I'm not exaggerating when I say that each pizza that rolls out of (get it? rolls...wheel...oh nevermind) that kitchen has half an inch of cheese baked on top of that puppy. It honestly gets to be overwhelming not to mention an workout in trying to continually get a bite with it taking a good two feet of pulling the slice away from your mouth before it breaks off. I'm also not a fan of the crust either. It tends to be thick as well and more of the hard crusty bread variety than soft and doughy kind which I prefer. In my opinion most of Halifax's pizza joints have it all over The Wheel but like I said, based on the wall of fame it holds a pretty special place in a lot of Antigonisher's hearts and much like St. FX's X-ring, it is theirs and they are pretty damn proud of it. read more

I have gave it a few chances and still absolutely don't like it here! I ordered a pizza burger and it took an hour and a half for them to give it to me.... I could have walked to sobeys and made my own by the time it was down. I also ordered a meatball sub and the meatballs where very dry to the point where I could hardly eat them.... would not recommend unless you love dry meatballs and waiting forever. read more

A definite must in Antigonish if you like a slightly unique and delicious pizza. Anyone that has spent time in the area knows how good the pizza is here and it is a long established institution in the area. A little on the pricey side for Pizza, I usually order 2 large to feed 3-4 people. Not an everyday expense but a good treat every once in a while. read more

Great little spot for people to have a bite to eat. Lots of cool pictures of people the owners have met. Close to the university and a huge campground. Open late and have quick service wether it's for a while pizza or by the slice. Slice sizes are approximately 1/3 of a pizza. read more

I'm from Pictou county and a die hard PC pizza fan but have been in Antigonish quite frequently lately and my girlfriend insisted on me trying the "legendary" Wheel pizza and I was not impressed for all the hype im sad to say . Lots of cheese , yes , but everything else was a bit bland . Reminded me of pizza from superstore . Kinda generic like pizza delight or Boston pizza . Now with that being said their are generations of Antigonish people who are die hard fans of this pizza and I can respect that but it's not what I call true homemade pizza I guess I'm spoiled from living off of greasy , toppings laden pizza from Pictou county . read more

The pizza was only OK. The cheese was kind of tasty and the amount of cheese was good but the sauce was mediocre at best, the tomatoes were sloppy and much too large, the dough on the bottom was too thin to support a feather let alone your toppings, and the customer service on the phone was atrocious and just down right rude. The Wheel is great, but the cheese of the pizza can slip off easily and can be kind of thick. It still tastes great!
