On a matter of days two new pubs have opened on the street not far from each other, this is a good thing as Glasgow does need a little more variety. Life Glasgow is the latest addition on the street based where the old Campus bar used to be. This is yet another sports bar with more than six televisions in front of me. The bar has a fresh look to it, I can even smell the paint, there is a stage in the middle of the bar for entertainment, there is the usual draft drinks on offer but nothing new apart from mangers ice cold only costing £3.30 a pint and that's pretty good for this street would work out 55p cheaper than o'Neils bar just up the road. Food available just your typical pub grub sandwiches, panini's & baps but there is a snack & sides section on the menu that looks pretty cheap but wouldn't expect much for the prices. A few down sides that I spotted was that the bar was empty just me and another customer, the other negative that the bar tender had poor English where I had to ask twice what she said. The walls are rather bare making this bar too minimalistic. I hope that this bar will be better than what was here before, will be back in a week or two to check up & adjust their rating, up or down.

The wait staff were really friendly and the decor was fresh and the place seemed really clean. It's typical pub grub and it's pretty cheap, so I was trying to manage my expectations! I ordered the candy floss martini which was amazing. Citrus vodka with chambord mixed with apple and cranberry juice it was rally yummy and moreish. Not to mention a big fluff of candy floss stuck to the side of the glass. I would definitely go back for a few more of those! The food wasn't great. I ordered mussels but they'd run out and made the huge mistake of opting for the carbonara. It was really gummy and stodgy and I left quite a lot of it, but the garlic bread was nice enough. Long story short I'd go back for the martini but definitely would skip the food next time.

A local recommended this restaurant especially for the Cullen skink soup. It was the best soup…read moreever. I spent the rest of our trip to Scotland looking for more of this soup. I tried it in three other restaurants and none of them came close to the Fairie Tree Inn. I would crawl on my hands and knees from Glasgow to Aberfoyle for another bowl of this soup.

Then as far as the food: the oysters had some odd watermelon flavor on them with a jalapeno?! (Plus, apparently half a dozen = 5). The salad was tiny with no dressing and I asked for balsamic or something and they brought out a larger salad with no dressing?! The cauliflower was cold and no sauce... They brought out more that was hot with sauce (which is the only reason I knew it should have that). I had to go to the bar and ask a bartender to bring more wine since the servers were not checking in at all. Terrible experience.

Hardly a replacement for the osprey which got it very right having a pub that you can get food at every table but we're WELCOME to go in and sit/stand whatever and have a pint! Exactly what a pub should be! Not here! Walked in a immediately got stopped with a "have you booked" on replying no the response was a very large sigh and we'll we'll try! (It wasn't that busy) One eventually getting seated and going to the bar to get served (they don't do table service but supposedly do drinks and dessert at your table after your initial order! ) I waited for 25 minutes to be served at the bar as there was only 2 people serving, there were 2 people being served and I was next in the line! one of the waitresses approached with her iPad and said I'll take your order since you've been waiting! No problem..... I start ordering and after much swiping and prodding she announces "oh I can as I can't put mains on the iPad!!" WHAT KIND OF SETUP IS THIS??? The pub was packed with lively people, great conversation, and exactly the kind of atmosphere you hope to find in Glasgow. I ordered a Pornstar Martini made with passion fruit vodka, Passoã, passion fruit purée, pineapple juice, vanilla syrup, and a side of prosecco. It was absolutely delicious. Jon enjoyed an Old Fashioned, and of course we added two more glasses of prosecco to toast the start of another trip around the sun. One of my favorite parts of the night was listening to the delightfully crusty bartenders banter with everyone at the bar. They had the perfect dry humor that made the whole place feel authentic and welcoming. Sometimes the best travel memories come from walking into a place just because the name makes you smile. Whuppity Scourie formerly Jade's formerly Bridgewater Tavern has changed Management A LOT…read more However, the revamped Whuppity Scourie is a very welcome change. Recently refurbished, they have split the main bar away from the Bistro to allow children to enter and reduce the noise. Good plan! The menu has been overhauled and they don't have as many dishes on the menu as before which is a lot better for the kitchen ensuring quality over quantity. I ordered King Prawns with Calamari, my mom Haggis Fritters and my sister in law Black Pudding in Breadcrumbs with a Chilli Sauce. No complaints. They were tasty and well presented. We then ordered Balmoral Chicken, Fish & Chips and a Chicken Burger. Portions are extremely good for the price, food was cooked fresh to order and of a good quality. There was only 1 staff member within the bistro when I was in looking after 4 tables, which was okay but we did have to wait at times to be served; not her fault though. The dishes are a little expensive for a Bar Bistro in Erskine, but you'd expect to pay more if you dined in Glasgow for the quality and size of the portions. Our bill for 2 courses and numerous drinks for 3 people came to around £56. Not THAT bad when you think of it. All in all, the Whuppity Scourie is much better than it's predecessors and I hope it's hear to stay.

It's always totally heaving at the weekend, so I tend to give it a miss then. But during the week it's actually a decent place to go and chill out. Inside the main bar, they had a refurb a few months back - and I like the new look. It's much more open and a bit more stylised. It has the usual range of city centre beers on tap - look out for Drygate's Gladeye IPA which is a more recent addition. I've never tried the food, but the menu looks ok. The best part of Bar Square is the seating area inside Merchant Square itself - again, horrendously loud at the weekend but with a nice chilled out background murmur during the week. Perfect place to round off date night with the Mr.

I think this place is good for a quick pub meal but if you're looking for something really tasty another pub/restaurant in Merchant Square might be better!
