Very welcoming atmosphere from staff and customers with real emphasis and passion on real ales. This is an absolute must visit if you are a lover of real ales - always spoilt for choice and they are always top notch in quality. Other drinks are available, also at a reasonable price. Great place to stop off for a couple of pints with friends, although we always end up spending longer here than expected - not a bad thing at all though!

This pub is reputed to be the oldest pub in Carlisle and is well known in the town for its well kept real ale. It has a good reputation for the quality of its beer and is in the Good Beer Guide this year too. They serve cask ales brewed locally and Mike the landlord is very passionate about it. They serve meals (except Sundays) and it is popular with tourists during the day and also has a loyal horde of locals that have been coming in for years. It is a huge building which used to be the grandstand for the racecourse before it was turned into the golf course. It is also next to the Sands Centre which makes it ideal for pre show drinks. I like to go here during the week as they do a great deal which is two meals for eight pounds. The menu is a decent size and the portions are really big. I like to get a jacket potato with prawns and salad. The beer is good and they do a nice wine selection. Children are allowed in to eat during the day and there is a pool table which is always popular. As the pub is big there is always plenty of seating. Outside there is a covered smoking area and on a hot day at the front and back there are loads of picnic tables to enjoy the weather and a nice drink and some food.

My friend went to grab drinks from the bar as we waited for the waiter to stop by for our food order. I ordered the sweet potato, chickpea, and spinach curry since I didn't want anything fried or meaty at this point. Nine days of English breakfast sausage will do that to you. My dining companion ordered the Buffalo wings and superfood pasta which looked pretty good as well. The food arrived in decent time considering how full the establishment was. The place was huge and bustling on a Saturday night. The service was fine. The food was decent. Great place to grab a meal if you can find a seat.

I was looking for vegan food and Blue Bell has 3 vegetarian selections which can easily be vegan by holding the cheese. I had the mixed vegetable bake (I can't remember the name) which was wonderful. The staff are really nice and friendly and happy to help. Although I used to go on an evening to play pool we can't do this anymore because they have removed the pool table although I don't know why as it was really popular. The place is comfortable, the beer was cheap and it had a good old fashioned pub feel with out the... how should we say 'dank'. But none of this is really what commends it. 1. The food, try something, try anything, i had the sausage and mash. It was huge, it was delicious and it didn't break the bank. For what really felt like a place used to summer tourists it was a real treat. 2. The landlord has to be the best part about it, the guy was for want of a better word a bloody riot. Despite the fact there was no more than a half dozen people inside he was the master of ceremonies and more than anything sold me on staying for as long as we did. Hence, despite the fleeting visit i felt compelled to send you all in his direction. Theres Ribbleshead, Malham Cove, and now the Nags Head, Brampton!
