Winchester is the ancient capital. Winchester is Home to the cathedral. Winchester was once home to Jane Austen. Winchester is home to King Alfred's College, now University of Winchester. This might just be the most amazing wee city in all the United Kingdom. It's beyond good. Let me start by saying that such a phenomenal place is no doubt, home to an incredible hotel. I came here to see one of my English mates marry his college sweetheart. Think of The Peaky Blinders in this anachronistic setting. Their wedding was a folkloral dream. The room was comfortable, clean, and luxurious. I enjoyed the British tele. Special marks for the location and easy access to a local farmer's market on the high street. If you decide to visit London, jump on a train and experience the country and Winchester. Experience this royal hotel! read more

A very, very tired property that has seen better days. Threadbare carpets kept together by sticky tape, scuffed surfaces, dated '80s decor, similarly dated menu with a very average breakfast and not the best of ingredients (anaemic bacon rashers clearly heated first and then grilled, reconstituted orange juice, you get the picture!). The staff are doing their best to keep it all up and running, but it must be a Sisyphean task in the circumstances and the owners' best option should be to shut the place down and refurbish completely. Shockingly these days, they charge you for WiFi too The Royal's only redeeming features are the friendly staff and the location, which as central as it can be. For the most part if you want a good room and a more contemporary experience go elsewhere instead. read more

I'm not sure why this hotel is getting all the shade. It is a quaint old hotel, but inside the room was splendid. It was fresh and clean, with a big comfy bed and a hot shower. What more is there to ask for? A room with a garden view? Oh wait, check. This hotel delivers. Wish we were spending more time in Winchester to see how great everything else is! read more

The original building (which really only houses the common areas) is pretty lovely. As is the central garden courtyard. The actual rooms, however, are housed in 1970s style two-story outbuildings that are not very well designed, not quality construction, and overall somewhat sad and shabby. There is no a/c anywhere, and the rooms get stuffy/hot. Staff were very nice with the exception of the male day manager, who was snippy and seemed to have a grudge against the world. read more

Nice old hotel, but everything is old. There's an annexe with better rooms to the side, but then that has a rather beige, 1980s feel to it. The best thing is the breakfasts. read more
