You can…read morefind the colorful sculpture of a family comprising of a father, mother, and daughter made out of metal next to the playground. The Family was created by artist Peter Otfinoski in 2002 out of recycled painted steel. Otfinoski was born in 1951 and grew up on a farm in New England. He honed his self taught artistic talent while working in mental institutions as a young man and he learned to weld metal from his uncle who repaired farm equipment. In 1990 Otfinoski moved to rural Loxahatchee where he built a sculpture park called the Lovehappiness Institute. Many of his large steel figures are crafted from old restaurant kitchens. Besides creating sculptures, Otfinoski is also an oil painter. His work has been exhibited at The Portland Museum of Art, The Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, The New Britain Museum of American Art and The Menello Museum of Folk Art in Orlando. I love this whimsical and bright sculpture. If you look closely at the mothers arm you can see the word love. To me the sculpture represents the families that come to enjoy the park and the love they have for each other. I enjoyed learning about Peter Otfinoski and since he is a local artist I will be on the lookout for more of his work the next time I visit an art museum.

The piece was dreamed up by a creative duo from L.A. called Aphidoidea--Jesus Eduardo Magaña and Paulina Bouyer-Magaña--and built by a local team at Southern Custom Iron and Art in Boynton Beach, run by Joe and Ashleigh Hernandez. It's made from tough, marine-grade metal and built to handle hurricane winds. At night, the lighting gives it a glow that probably looks amazing from the water. The sailboat reflects Lantana's deep ties to fishing and the sea. The two sails stand for direction and drive, kind of like where the town's been and where it's heading. Commissioned for the development and installed in 2017, it remains the tallest public artwork in Palm Beach County. Paley describes Cavalcade as a dramatic silhouette meant to engage the sky and sunlight. The sculpture's spire-like forms, painted in vibrant yellows, are inspired by palm fronds, which he sees as delicate floral elements reaching skyward. Though the piece is not kinetic, its folded, interlaced metal shapes suggest motion as if stirred by ocean air. Paley emphasizes how the sculpture changes throughout the day, with shifting light and shadow enhancing its dynamism and creating a sense of constant transformation. When I first saw it, I was struck by how it seemed to rise out of the pavement like a burst of energy--part botanical, part industrial, and entirely alive. More than marking the corner, it claims it. The sculpture feels like welcome sign for the neighborhood that blends ambition with artistry. While fully metal and status, it channels the softness of nature. The artist based the design on his interpretation of palm fronds. He also designed it to have folding metal to look like it had movement even though it is stationary. Albert Paley's work can be found in the permanent collections of over 30 museums, nationally and internationally, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Toledo Museum of Art, and in London in the Victoria and Albert Museum and The British Museum. About his work Paley has said "In creating a work of art, besides my personal experience, my concern is how it emotionally and intellectually engages the viewer. Through the creative process I have developed a personal visual vocabulary fundamentally based in symbolism and metaphor which is implicit in my work." I love the whimsical shapes and how colorful it is. When you look at it at a certain angle it reminds me a little bit of Edward Scissor Hands. It's large size and bright colors really make it stand out as you drive by.

On the brick plaza is a 6-foot, $15,000 tombstone-shaped monument that stands in tribute to Nancy Malley Graham. Engraved with a pineapple, the slab memorializes the public park as Nancy M. Graham Centennial Square, "She inspired us to sculpt a Capital City and her vision became our shared reality." Nancy grew up poor in Tennessee and went on to marry, divorce, remarry, and have a couple of kids. She worked to put herself through college and law school and in her mid-30s she received her law degree from the University of Florida. She worked for several law firms never staying too long in any job or marriage. She started he political career in 1988 in West Palm Beach as a city commissioner but resigned after only two years because of a conflict of interest. She ran for mayor two years later and won with 56 percent of the vote. Her second term say her secure 76 percent of the vote. While she served she fought gender stereotypes from people who called her pushy and bitchy. During her term as mayor, Nancy Malley Graham was known as the public official who sparked the city's massive downtown revitalization and who fought crime and drugs. She once told The New York Times: "I want to make West Palm Beach the downtown for the whole country." Newsweek magazine dubbed her one of the 25 most dynamic mayors in America. Under her guidance the city started" Clematis By Night," a weekly event named for the city's main street. Most every Thursday of the year, the area around the downtown plaza is filled with bands, artists and food. The outdoor festival draws thousands of people each week. In Florida Nancy swerved as a city commissioner, a mayor, a top redevelopment official, and a developer. While developing West Palm Beach Nancy met her third husband and married him next to her namesake fountain. Graham left office in March 1999, a few weeks after he monument was unveiled. After a falling out with Lois Frankel, her successor as mayor, she left for a job in San Diego. The Nancy M. Graham Centennial Square features Centinnial Fountain. Kids use it as a splash pad and it is part of the light show during Sandi Land. The plaza also includes benches, tables and chairs. Street -side parking and garage parking is available nearby. This square is always a popular place for people to congregate during the West Palm Beach Green Market and citywide events. Nancy M. Graham's shadow still looms large over West Palm Beach.

Fish out of Water is a whimsical sculpture of a fish jumping out of the water. You can find it…read morealong the Intracoastal Waterway at the corner of Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard and Flagler Drive across from Providencia Park. The flying fish was created by nationally-recognized West Palm Beach artist Mark Fuller in 1993 as part of the Art in Public Places program. Fuller is an environmental graphic and industrial designer. He created the glittery butterfly in Palm Beach Gardens and the obelisk at Legacy Place. He also designed the fish and lizard cutouts on the sound barrier wall along Interstate 95. When designing Flying Fish Fuller was inspired by a wartime seaplane base that once operated nearby. Thinking of planes the idea came to his mind of a fish that was flying.The fish acts as a weathervane and will turn with the wind. In 2014 the base of the fish was hit by a motorist and it broke some of the welds. A poor repair job by a concerned citizen left the art in even more disrepair. The city finally agreed to pay Fuller to fix the sculpture and now it sits overlooking the Intracoastal today. I'm glad the city decided to fix this piece. It adds interest and a pop of color along the waterfront. There is a fishing deck and benches behind the sculpture.

Guarding the beach at Boynton Beach Ocean Front Park is a sea turtle statue named Opus 14. He rests…read moreonly a few yards from the dunes were the real sea turtles come to lay their eggs. Created in 1990, Opus weighs in at 700 pounds and is 54 inches high. He is made out of welded steel that came from pipes that had once been on the deck of an Exxon offshore oil rig in the Bahamas. Rick Beau Lieu, the Boynton Beach artist who created Opus, was tasked with creating environmentally conscious art out of an environmentally harming material. He worked alongside the Center for Marine Conservation to create the piece. After he was completed, Opus went on a five year tour to spread environmental awareness. In 1995 he came back to Boynton Beach and spent two years at the Historical Schoolhouse Children's Museum and 13 years in the lobby at City Hall. In 2010, Boynton Art in Public Places purchased Opus for $24, 300 with money raised from impact fees. He was then lowered by crane into his current home. They hope Opus will serve as an educator about sea turtles and the importance of recycling. The sculpture was intended to be the centerpiece of the parks 1.7 million dollar refurbishment project which included a new boardwalk, benches, and picnic tables along with shade structures. I love discovering new public art pieces and Opus really caught my eye. Sea turtles are some of my favorite marine animals and his message of conservation is one we can all get behind. Reduce, reuse, and recycle so that garbage stays out of the ocean and out of the bodies of these precious creatures.

They many stores along the strip. There are small boutiques, gelato ice cream, bakery, bars and restaurants. We were there on St. Patrick's Day and it was just filled a wonderful parade with people enjoying the day wearing the colors of green. Worth a stop when you are in the area.
