There's just something about Masie. The way she talks to students, the way she grows new teachers,…read morethe way she sets up the space. It's not like any other yoga studio. The space: Absent are the mirrors at other studios that tempt you to look at your body and compare it to others; in their place is the warm wood of the beautiful old space, and the calming tree and drishti painted on the walls. Masie and her staff are the ones to correct your alignment with a word or gentle touch. That way you stay focused on the practice and don't get ripped away by the outside world. The space also has a bathroom and changing room, and they offer massage in house. It feels like coming to someone's home and having a communal experience with the instructor and the other students. The classes: All levels and some more challenging classes. Masie is always learning new elements and new practices. Her curiosity is infectious, but somehow she never makes you feel foolish or intimidated because you don't know something. Her instructors are obviously chosen for what new ideas they bring as well, or a capacity to receive new ideas. You can pick up some Tai chi and Yoga Nidra among many other things in the yoga and other classes. One of my favorite was a class called moon flow where she put together a variety of lunar poses and made certain "Yin" tweaks to postures (like looking down instead of up, which is yang). It was such a little change that made the practice seem new and fresh and slightly spiritual. The instructors: Masie is obviously the center of this universe. Her radiance draws you in and sustains you throughout classes. She is thoughtful without being stoic, loving without being insipid, and firm without being judgmental. The teachers that work for her obviously all feel it too, and everyone she hires seems to pick up at least part of what makes her such a great teacher. She completely changed my outlook on yoga because of her wholistic approach. The studio somehow manages to be genuinely inspiring instead of a collection of fitness models spouting a string of platitudes like so many other places. Some of her instructors are very experienced, and some are homegrown by Masie. All of them share this mindset of a whole mind-body-spirit practice that is never too much of any one good thing. I used to come here after work, and I too have arrived too late for class. I was disappointed but it's best for everyone - I needed those few minutes before beginning to unwind and get ready. There were times I've been so exhausted from the day that the practice would take me straight from the helter skelter into relaxed bliss. Don't skip coming to class. Leave early. Talk to the other students and the instructor. Be open and friendly before class. Learn about yoga and yourself. Did I mention there was amazing relaxing retreats to beautiful places like Hawaii and Arizona and North Carolina?

The instructor was really nice and it was easy to follow. This was one of the most challenging workouts I've done in a long time! My only complaint is that i wish it was more affordable but you get what you pay for here. Super clean gym, they have a parking lot and hand towels. Loved it!

I love HyLo for the showers alone. The women's shower is a full room, with marble walls, and all the accoutrements you'd need--soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, towels, and even a scale. My only complaint is that they don't have makeup remover or any hair products in the bathroom when I'm getting ready after my workout, but I just bring what I need from home. The HY classes really work you in the cardio department. They all use a combination of spin bikes, rowing machines, free weights / kettlebells, ropes, TRX things (idk what they're called), and body weight to perform a lot of exercises in a short period of time with a lot of energy. Similar to what I assume some crossfit classes include. The LO classes use a special board to use your body weight and weighted poles or rubber bands to strengthen your body using your own body weight. This is most similar to pilates, barre, or yoga. All of which I'm terrible at, as I have the upper body strength of a newborn baby. Both classes totally kick my butt and make me feel like I've really worked my body hard! Highly recommend!

I've only been going here since May, but I'm already hooked. I usually only focus on running, but…read moreI'm trying to incorporate cross training and oh my goodness, I didn't know it was even possible to sweat this much. The classes are mostly one hour, but a couple are a little bit longer, and you will definitely feel like you got a good workout. Most of the moves are pretty traditional yoga poses and you can look around at your neighbors if you're not sure what to do. Where the challenge comes in is that the temperature is about 90 while you workout, hence the sweat. But it seriously feels so good. Virginia is an amazing instructor and I really appreciate her emphasis on going at your own pace and ability. If you are looking for something different to mix up your workout routine, or ate just looking for an awesome yoga class, I definitely recommend Charleston Power Yoga.

I'll start with the good, because it was excellent and more than 5 stars: the teacher, Crystal (sp?). The gentleman next to me told me before class that her background was in dance and her flow was indeed creative, incorporated poses and transitions new to me along with familiar ones. The $30 drop in rate was totally worth it for her class! Alas. I am gobsmacked that the studio doesn't have a water fountain. The slightly snippy gent at the front desk pointed to the cooler where I could buy water and said they take cards. What? I found the tiny bathroom in the back and filled my bottle with tap water, TYVM. As the same friendly gent at the mat next to me said "I'd neve thought about it but as a visitor that would make me mad too." Excellent teacher, underwhelming basics at the studio, won't return.
