I recently made a special trip here to buy the Destination Portsmouth game as they were selling it for £4.99. the assistant was really friendly and we were discussing where to buy The Portsmouth Edition Monopoly too. The store is a little awkward to navigate if you have a wheel chair or buggy, as some of the displays are in the way a bit.

This bookshop is located on the outskirts of the city centre, therefore it is not as easily…read moreaccessible as the alternative bookshop. However this bookshop concentrates on the student population and is in a handy location for them. As it is situated next to the Student Union students can't miss it. This shop sells all the textbooks that the students require because they get the reading lists from the University and order in advance. However the selection of other books is quite limited. This is due to its small size and the fact that it is focusing on the textbook side. For students it is handy as it will sell all the books they need and when I was there they also offered a student card to give you money off as well. However it is not the sort of bookshop anyone will find interesting to browse round.

The shop is essentially just a large newsagents, but they do sell a lot of hard-to-find magazines, including some US beauty mags and obscure science-fiction ones. They also have a huge chocolate and sweet section, but what kept me going back there is the fact that they sell scampi fries crisps, which seem to be impossible to find anywhere. Apart from this, they also sell postcards and small gifts. The staff in there are very lovely and helpful, too.
I popped in this Saturday because I heard a rumor that Candy & Cards sold pipe tobacco 'ye olde…read moresweet shop' style (as in loose, from tubs) and I was not disappointed! Visible from the main thoroughfare of the store, there is a clear tobacco section in the left-hand corner behind the counter in which they sell not only loose American Blend pipe tobacco but also to my surprise loose aromatic Auld Kendal hand rolling tobacco. I believe that this is the only store in the area that still sells tobacco in this way. Of course they also sell OTC tobacco as well, but it was the specialist loose stuff that I came for. I've reviewed the tobaccos here: Auld Kendal Strawberry Hand Rolling Tobacco (http://rlstevenson.co.uk/auld-kendal-strawberry-hand-rolling-tobacco-review/) American Blend Peach Pipe Tobacco (http://rlstevenson.co.uk/american-blend-peach-tobacco/) The store owners, presumably husband and wife, are very friendly & welcoming and when questioned knew a great deal about tobacco and provided excellent advice. They even let me smell a few tubs of aromatic! My only qualms are that the store closes quite early (on a Saturday they close at 15:30) which makes it quite difficult for me to get there during opening times. The store also has quite a few empty shelves. Please don't let this store fall victim to the harsh economic times! Tell your friends about its wide selection of aromatics. I highly recommend it.

British Bookshops and Sussex Stationers is the best place in Southampton to get all your stationery…read morerequirements. It has a bigger, better and more attractively displayed selection than any other shop. Also, this store is really great for book-buying and browsing. They always have money-saving special deals on offer. Their friendly and very helpful staff really know their stuff and make excellent recommendations. Author Philip Pullman supports independent bookshops and has presented this branch of BB/SS with a signed Oxford Literary Festival photograph of himself with the message, `best wishes to British Bookshops and Sussex Stationers`. You can see this photo displayed on the wall behind the main counter at the back of the shop. Nicely done !!!!!!
Sussex Stationers (aka British Bookshops) is always a good place to come and find new release books…read moreat a cheaper than main bookstore price. On a recent visit into Southampton I was looking for the latest rew release from James Patterson and popped into Sussex Stationers in the precinct after looking in Waterstones and Borders. True to form, SS had it cheaper than both of them. The only other place to get books as cheap as this in my opinion are the supermarkets but they don't often have them in so quickly. While I was browsing an assistant offered an opinion on a book I was looking at (Twilight) and recommended this so I purchased it along with my James Patterson one. After reading it and realising she was indeed correct and it was a really good read I went straight back, thanked her and bought the following 3 sequels. I'm always really impressed with the service in SS/BB and this is usually my first port of call when looking for a new book.
