We have not attended for a while but going this afternoon for the new Maverick-Top Gun movie. Hearing all great things from others who have already watched. Apparently tickets are high demand. They were sold out for later times today. Seems everyone is hungry for entertainment fun and the best actors' work in high demand. And we are huge Tom C fans. And this movie was REALLY good and clean entertainment.

Probably my first time here in a decade or two. I was in town and somehow Deadpool and Wolverine was opening a day earlier here than in the rest of the world. Went with my nieces since I'm the "Cool Uncle". (I'm sure that's how they see me ;-) Tickets and popcorn were half what I pay where I live now. And I was definitely happy they upgraded to the comfy reclining seats. And there in lies the rub. For whatever reason, while most of the theatre's floor is on an incline, the floor between the last two rows must not be. And my niece's boyfriend got tickets for the back row. The guy in front of me was not excessively tall, nor was he wearing a giant hat, but when I reclined in my comfy chair his head rose like the morning sun into my field of view. I ended up sitting bolt upright for the entire movie. This would have bothered me more had I not been watching such a fantastic movie. Definately go see movies here . . . . just don't sit in the back row.

Updates and renovations have made this into one of the better theaters in the area. While it may…read morenot have the most exciting exterior or lobby, the theaters themselves have a historic, old-school vibe to them and feature modern, reserved seating that are incredibly comfortable. The theater has three screens, and the main theater (no. 1) particularly stands out. Screen and sound quality are good, but they're not as elevated as the seating. I wish the sound system was louder, deeper, and more refined. Also, since the location is downtown, parking can be all over the place. Stalls up front fill up fast. Pricing is fair, but do keep in mind this is still a small-town theater so temper your expectations if you've been to theaters outside the area like those in Lincoln or Omaha. Overall, though, this is a good theater made even better by the new updates and I've had nothing but pleasant experiences every time.

It's also the only theater in town at the time of this update. The only downside is the seating. Despite being updated, they are not modern, reclining plush seats. I get why this was done, so as to not clash with the retro vibe, but the nearby Rivoli theater in Hastings updated to more modern seating despite being old-school as well, and its charm and vibe remained intact so I do wish the same would've been done here because the seats can get very uncomfortable after a while. Worse, if a showing is particularly busy, you'll be so close to someone that you may as well be sitting on their lap due to how close the seats are to each other. Skinny legends need not worry, but RIP anyone who is tall, broad, or even a little plus-sized because you will be shoulder to shoulder. Still, despite the shortcomings of its seating, this theater is still excellent. Tickets are inexpensive at $5 a pop and concessions are also very affordable. It's definitely great place to catch a movie, just keep in mind it may be a little uncomfortable. Oh, and also a little annoying if there are any rowdy kids around.

The other theater which continued to the 1980's, The Capitol, was built as a Vaudeville theater and had a groovy 1920's balcony. It is now a parking lot, and I suspect it will remain in that state. Every city in America has the same sob story. The Grand, however, survived. It even has its share of first-run movies, and the local volunteer network who works on its upkeep likes to do nice things like replace and repair the art-deco lights and generally make it a decent place to go see a show (including the occasional live music performance).

The 12th Street Cinema only plays movies once an evening on Friday and Saturday, with a matinée and evening viewing on Sunday so tickets usually sell out fast. I was amazed when we walked in the door and it only cost $10 total for my family of 4. That is unheard of with movie theaters today! We then walk to the concession stand where the highest price item was $2 for large popcorn and large pop. I'm pretty sure that most of the workers there are high school kids who volunteer their time for free which is how they keep their prices so low. The entire experience was great from start to finish from the friendly staff, affordable prices and clean theater. My only regret is that I've lived in this town for 3 years and am just now visiting the 12th Street Cinema. I can't wait until our next visit.

The local talent that comes…read morethrough is impressive, and it's so enjoyable to see people from the community sharing their love for the performing arts. They have a very solid sound and light system, and I love the thrust stage. As an audience member, you feel so close to the action and it's a great experience. KCT does a huge variety of plays and musicals each season, including children's, so there really is something for everyone. I'd recommend seeing a show here or even being a part of one of their shows to absolutely everyone!

If you are use to tons of movies in regular and 3D and time intervals all day, you won't find that here. It has one movie four days each week. That's it. But for the price, you can't complain. On to concessions and you find the same great bang for your buck. We got two large drinks and a large popcorn for $8. Yes, all that for eight bucks. Being from a city on the coast, we are use to $6.75 for just a drink. So take this opportunity to enjoy the flick with all the snacks your stomach desires. As if I didn't already gush about the food, they also offer free popcorn seasoning. Yum. If you are in the area and need an evening activity, drive by the downtown theatre to see what's playing.
