Where do I start with The Yellow Carrot. Upon our arrival there wasn't many people inside so I didn't expect much. Wade was our server and greeted us right away to get us seated. He presented us with the menu and drink menu followed by the nights specials. His attention to detail was something I've never experienced, every restaurant you go to they just pour you a glass of ice water. Not here, if you prefer ice they will ask. I started with a Cherry Habanero Margarita, there is such a flavor profile of just this drink alone. You get the sweet from the Cherry, followed by just a slight bit of spice and refreshing basil notes on your nose and the finishing notes of the drink. Wade has worked with the Executive Chef on this drink menu to pair it with the out of this world flavor profiles of the entree menu. Our appetizer was the Three X Brussels and the Artichoke Zobo. My date was a fan of the lemon glazed Brussels and I couldn't stay away from the roasted garlic Brussels. The roasted garlic Brussels were paired with some sweety drop peppers from Peru that were a unique touch but delicious for the size. Our date night special was the Grouper Filet topped with lump crab meat and a corn succotash. On the side we were presented with a polenta cake that was prepared perfectly. It had an amazing creamy texture with just a touch of spice. I've never had polenta before but if this is what it tastes like then I'm all about it! I try and eat every restaurant in Durango at least once. The Yellow Carrot has an atmosphere and menu that you would expect to find in the city and service I think you'll find rare on this planet. I will most definitely be back to indulge in the atmosphere and drinks of The Yellow Carrot but mostly for the absolutely phenomenal entree menu. I was so excited to try this restaurant after our friends recommended it and said they had tons of vegetarian options, but unfortunately this was a miss for us. I was at first thrown off by the reminder we got from OpenTable confirming our reservation, noting that the dress code was "business casual". Imagine my surprise when we pulled up to a tiny indistinguishable strip where the restaurant was located - definitely not the "business casual" vibes I was anticipating. We were greeted at the door by the waiter and another couple who was asked if they had a reservation - they said no, to which the waiter said "we'll see what we can do" to a 1/3 occupied restaurant at 6:30 on a Saturday. Should have been our first clue. Our table was all set up and ready for us and we were seated immediately. I was again turned off by the price of over $10 per mocktail - I understand fresh, but at that price it's robbery. We got the rosemary fries and the blooming onion to start - the honey sriracha sauce that accompanied the fries was tasty, and the other people in my party enjoyed the basil ranch. The blooming onion was pretty, but extremely messy and hard to eat. Scanning the menu and noting that even the vegetarian entree was over $40 a plate, I was not blown away by any of the options. I settled on the $18 tomato Gorgonzola bisque which was okay but not worth the price. The others in my party got the crispy gnocchi (didn't like), the pad Thai (hard pass), and the lamb burger (enjoyed, but felt the price was still steep). Also if you look at the small print on the menu you'll see that they charge $8 extra for split plates - so basically this place just loves charging the s*** out of their customers for subpar food. We were all looking forward to the beignets, but learned that they got rid of their dessert menu (all desserts are now in the front cases) and no longer had them. We settled on the butterscotch carrot cookie, the carrot cake cupcake, and the mint chocolate cookie. The cookies were huge and fairly priced at $3.25 a piece, but the cupcake was $10. Honestly I would recommend you save your money and go somewhere else. If the prices were even half of what they currently charge I would consider it "decent" but definitely not at their current price. This place spends almost too much time on their presentation and not enough on quality food - for example see how gaudy of a vessel my soup was served in. Hard to eat with it being that high, and overall just unnecessary. I get the "nice presentation" but this place just seemed too over the top and felt too snooty for my taste. read more

This place is freaking delicious. We weren't sure what to expect with such polarizing reviews, but it's a no brainer that it's a 5 star restaurant. The place is only a few minutes from downtown Durango. We came here for dinner and then went back for brunch because it was so good. We literally loved everything we ate. They have a unique spin on every dish you will order. And the presentation is beautiful. It's fun watching other people's reaction when their food comes out. But the best part is the flavor. They have the most amazing sauces. We loved both of their burgers, the blooming onion, chips and dip and gnocchi. For brunch we had the shaksucka and the potato benedict (which was the table favorite). And both times we had their caramel doughnuts. This may be our favorite restaurant in a Colorado mountain town. What a lovely experience! My husband and I went here for New Year's Eve dinner. We ordered their holiday specials which were Korean chicken. smoked duck, and smoked salmon taquitos. All were amazing! The pairing and combination of flavors within each dish was top notch. Every bite was delightful. The basil limeaid is my new favorite drink EVER! Sooooo fresh and almost pallet cleansing. Just a slight deduction in service because I wish they would of been straightforward with us if they were out of something instead of just substituting. Oh, my! Where has this restaurant been my whole life?!? Love the ambiance walking in the door and was immediately seated by the friendly guy behind the bar. Started with their basil ginger ale non-alcoholic drink. AMAZING! From the bright green color, beautiful presentation to the complex and intense flavors, this drink is worth every calorie. I started my lunch with the asparagus bisque. And it was art mixed with dining. The grilled asparagus fanned out to be the bristles on a brush! My server pored the bisque into a bowl that has seasonings and a few fresh berries. At first, I questioned the berries but they did an excellent job of complementing the rich bisque. Best asparagus bisque I have ever had . For my lunch entree I ordered the purple potato pancake. Just when I thought it couldn't get better, the exquisite pancake was served. A feast for both the eye and stomach! Brussel sprouts, teardrop tomatoes, carrots and a delicious sauce accompanied the moist and flavorful pancake. Love the Spanish music playing in the background. You don't feel like you are in a strip mall but instead I feel transported to a lovely little cafe in Spain. A very good place to eat. My only knock for this place is that there were only two people working the dining room when we arrived. Therefore in between serving us and his handling the pastry counter we sat at our table for more than 30 minutes before we could order dinner. Taking that into account, the food was very good. The spousal unit devoured the Greek Lamb Burger. I loved the Shrimp and Grits. I have had this dish in South Carolina and I have had the version they serve in Gulfport, Mississippi. Hi, had dinner. The atmosphere was confusing when we sat down to dinner. Spanish music, some Greek food on the menu. No matter though because the staff was very friendly. I got the lamb burger and it had a ton of cucumber swirls on it with a a lot of TaZieke sauce. What I didn't understand was the swirl of ketchup on the plate and I hate ketchup. Either way I enjoyed the burger. The fries are heaven on a plate. They were covered in rosemary brown butter and very addicting. My dessert was a piece of baclava. It wasn't very good because there was so much filling that it was oozing out of the filling dough and had a wet consistency. I did not eat it. Gluten free and dairy light eater. My friend and I came here on my last time in Durango. It's in a small strip mall First impressions, it's not pretentious. It's cozy and comfortable. Every person who stopped by our table, even the owner, was joyful, helpful and genuinely interested in us. My one gripe (ha) is our server couldn't tell us his favorite dish. He just kept listing them all off. He loved them all. That is a good sign. His MOST favorite was the bitchin ancient grain bowl. You can't make changes or substitutions so you get the whole thing of order something else. Luckily it's well labeled gluten free. My only complaint is the bowl they served it in was too big. But the food was to die for. Mushrooms were tender and flavorful. The sauces were amazing. I kept making yummy noises throughout the dish. My friend ordered the Shepards pie. It was unique as it was a chop and not ground. It was a smaller portion. She hadn't had lamb in years. Some we people ruin lamb. This was the best she's ever had. Everything worked well. The meat was perfectly tender and I even snuck a taste. Afterward we had a gluten free cupcake to share. My complaint here was the Carmel should have been on the outside. It was more decadent than the amazing chocolate that I was stuffed of rich cupcake by the middle. Very good food but very expensive for a pretty casual restaurant in a strip center. The food presentation is beautiful and the food was good, so 4 stars for that. But we were sitting at an outside table facing a parking lot and Main St. The inside tables were nicer but we wanted to sit outside. Entree prices were $25 and up. What a great dining experience we had last night with our family at the Yellow Carrot. We showed up last minute with 12 people and they were able to accommodate us. Not only was the food top notch, the service was amazing as well. The flavors the chef puts into the food are like nothing most of us have had before. Sometimes meals are outstanding, and sometimes underwhelming. The presentation is always amazing and colorful, but the food is expensive and I think overpriced for what it is. They could cut back on portion sizes and prices a bit. That being said, I've had fun and good food here - like my 60th birthday party with a dinner tab in the 4-figure range w/o the tip. We've had a bad experience with customer service, not worth going into ALL details but forewarned to check your bag/box if you get something to go. We got the wrong birthday cake ($80+) and because I couldn't leave my husband's birthday party to exchange it, we had to use it. No courtesy at all from them. It was lavendar-lemon and not good. Guess where we'll never go again for a birthday party or a cake? I think most people would love it here particularly if you are visiting and/or it's a one time thing because it's kind of different for Durango. I guess I could have left without purchasing anything but I was already there so I purchased it, although I was astonished at the price. And, I added a tip, which I shouldn't have done either. The service was slow since only one person was working and he was having trouble figuring out how to give change to someone ahead of me. He did apologize for making me wait. The cupcake tasted stale and was dry, with a frosting that left a heavy coating on the tongue. Not good. I can make much better ones, altho they aren't decorated as fanciful. I ate nothing else during this visit, but I have eaten here before. I believe the menu is way overpriced and somewhat pretentious. Coconut creamed corn Thai coconut and black pepper impossible meatball. Beet fried beet and spinach salad. Spinach dumpling. The presentation of each dish was beautiful. They included nice garnishments of spiral radishes and long sliced carrots. The service was very good (we were early for dinner) and we had an enjoyable experience. Spiralized "chips" were half underdone, half-burned, and sour with what appeared to be vinegar powder. Steak ordered medium rare was gray. Salad swimming in dressing. Epicurean delight! I am beyond satisfied with my lunch at The Yellow Carrot. They are tucked away in a strip mall but offer a full service bar, bakery, their own home made bagged chip (sweet potato or beet) and take a bake dinners! We stopped in for lunch and they offer a full but varied menu with everything from sandwiches, burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches and clean eating bowls to full blown entrees. Don't be fooled by the words burgers and grilled cheese because no hash is slung here every offering is gourmet! I had the Beet fried beet melt (vegan), avocado, goat cheese, horseradish cheddar, pickles, pesto and honey sriracha, what a flavor combination it is indescribably amazing! My friend had the meat eaters choice the Wild Philly, tender eye of ribeye, peppers, onions, mushrooms, cheddar sauce and Fontina she said it was a tender, flavorful high quality slices of meat and the vegetables were fresh and flavorful. We were both so satisfied with our meal as the portions were generous we had to take 1/2 of it home. We did stop by the bakery and took a tres leche and white chocolate raspberry cupcakes home with us ( I'm still to full to sample mine). I'll leave the desserts for another review. This is hands-down the hidden gem in the Durango culinary scene. There is NO WAY that this beauty should not make everyone's Top 10 list. A non-descript location on the north side of town on 550. Cool vibe menu with big burgers, petite filets, and pastas that evoke Northern Italy...but with a twist. This is run by a serial restaurateur who definitely has her grasp on complexly subtle sauces. There are numerous vegetarian and gluten-free options available, but the bakery in this place has some items that put pounds on at first sight. A must visit when dining in Durango, and it is one of the closest fine food establishments in town if coming in from the Purgatory ski area.
