My sister gifted us the childbirth class even though I know you can take birth classes through your hospital but I am so glad she did! Then Comes Baby is so comprehensive and feels really much more intimate and holistic than anything else. Each class feels really long especially going to it on a Monday evening after work, but I honestly think all my fears of childbirth decreased significantly just attending the class. And even more importantly, my husband learned a lot alongside with me which makes me feel even more confident going into birth. I also appreciate that there isn't a hidden agenda to get people to do one thing or the other, how the class went over everything from non-medicated births to epidurals and C-sections. The class was interactive and informative and we always felt comfortable to ask all the questions. We also got a complimentary breastfeeding class that we attended and I'm so glad we took advantage of that too because after my fears of labor subsided, my fears about breastfeeding arose and this class helped alleviate those fears as well! Just took the Infant & Child CPR & Choke saving class today. Can't remember our instructors name (I'm sorry) but he was great! We went over way more things than I thought we would: Baby proofing, sids, choking, CPR, poisoning, drowning, household hazards, burns, bleeding etc. We were even coached through what a typical 911 call would sound like, what questions we would be asked, how not to panic. When to call 911 vs advice nurse/pediatrician... So very informative! The class did not feel rushed. Instructor really took his time answering questions stepping us through the processes. The environment was one of welcoming. Parking was easy to find & we were able to bring our 5 month old along!!! (Precrawling infants were welcome) Staff was very helpful even prior to attending since I had a little hiccup in registering my husband. I'm sad it's over it was a great, fun, informative experience... As a new parent I feel prepared, & empowered, and not afraid should an emergency arise. read more

I did the childbirth class at Then Comes Baby during COVID times therefore it was virtual. Overall, I wouldn't really recommend it. My objective for taking the class was to learn about childbirth, some practical advice (breathing techniques, sitting, partner work), and build community with other first-time parents that live in the area. Unfortunately the class only really touched on one of my goals which was general information about child birth. I know it is hard in COVID times to adapt, but they really haven't adjusted well to making these classes virtual. Both the content was stale and heavily lecture rather than discussion/activity/guides and also did not facilitating bonding / building community with the rest of the class, which would have been really nice (e.g. doing more breakouts, get to know each others, share outs). The classes were very long for a virtual setting (2.5 hours) with one 5 minute break and with the very limited activities / interaction it made it hard to focus. There are so many things you can still do virtually which we would like to see! In terms of the content of the class, it would be great if it was more practical. Breathing techniques? Counter pressure techniques? I still feel wholly unprepared for birth--but I'm sure that's how the majority of people feel going into labor so it's not like my expectations were to feel fully prepared, but just to have more information. While I did like the teacher, she has been really unresponsive to any follow-up emails. I've sent over three really straight forward emails (over 6 weeks) and haven't gotten any responses. For this reason, in retrospect I'd rather have taken best in class / watched recordings / did a free class since all the elements of making it personal / local were missing. I look forward to maybe trying again when there is in-person because I did hear such great things I'd love to give them another chance. read more

We took our birth prep class with Elyse, which genuinely prepared us to what's to come. When I was induced, I knew my options, when they pushed for more augmentations, I knew to take my time. Granted I had a doula (my BEST decision) but the amount of information Elyse provided (while being fun, authentic and real) was invaluable. We also took living on baby time with Megan, which led us to purchasing a few items she recommended and you know what? They became our favorites. Today we leaned on them to rent a hospital grade pump after my milk decided to take his time coming in and my LC recommended pumping. Finally, we met some of our closest friends in this class. If you need a hospital grade pump, consider Then Comes Baby! If you need to pump around the clock for your Little One you will need to have this unit as it has more horsepower. While you may also have a "Symphony" at home, it is not the same thing. Sabrina (or your Lactation consultants) will also explain this to you. My wife and I attended the prenatal birth prep class at Then Comes Baby and it was incredibly helpful. Over the years, several of my friends have shared stories about their wives pregnancy and labor experiences so I wasn't completely in the dark. However, as we got closer to my wife's due date, I was super grateful to have access to the wealth of useful information that we learned at the classes. The overall course is split into 4 sessions. Our instructor Claire was a labor nurse and lactation consultant so she had in-depth knowledge on the subject matter and a lot of personal experience. She approached the material with respect, sensitivity, and a lightheartedness. By the end of the course, we felt really comfortable and bonded with the other couples that attended the classes. There is something really special about getting as prepared as possible for a major life change with other people who are going through the same process. Ultimately, my wife's labor experience was LONG and did not go as planned. Regardless, I'm grateful we attended the birth prep class at Then Comes Baby because it gave us both a level of confidence and ease before we ventured into the delivery room. I rented the hospital-grade Medela Symphony pump from Then Comes Baby for nearly a year in order to keep milk supply up during a stressful time as a new Mom. My experience with the pump rental was fantastic, just about as good as it can get. They had one available for pickup the same day I emailed them. It looked and operated like it was brand new and came in a carrying case that was a bit bulky but was a *must-have* for safely transporting the pump. My rental agreement was month-to-month and it was simple to renew using their website. I am so thankful the pump was available when I needed it and the staff at Then Comes Baby was so easy to work with. The pump was essential in helping me continue to breastfeed through the first year of my baby's life, which was a major goal of mine. I also attended a few classes at Then Comes Baby and had a great experience each and every time. It's a warm and inviting environment. I reached out to Sabrina yesterday about what had happened when I went to the prenatal yoga class. She promptly responded to my email and scheduled a time to call me today. She was very apologetic and reassured me she would speak to the yoga instructor and that this would never happen again. Business owners often don't have control over every little thing that their employees do which might cause a customer to have a bad experience. All one can hope for is for the owner to care enough to take constructive feedback to improve the business going forward. Sabrina did exactly that. She handled the matter quickly and professionally, and made me feel like this is definitely not the standard for her business. I took an infant CPR class at Then Comes Baby and it was excellent! It was so nice to be able to ask a lot of questions, especially since my daughter is 1 year old, so she's right on the cusp of needing some adjustments in the way we would perform CPR and the back slaps for choking. It was also great that our teachers brought some adult-sized dolls to practice on for people like me who have slightly older children. I didn't end up using it, but it was nice to know I could have! Both Forrest and Chris were so friendly and approachable, and they obviously have so much real-world experience, so I trusted and loved hearing their advice and info. read more

Then Comes Baby has been a huge part of my journey in becoming a parent. I've had nothing but positive, supportive experiences there! I chose the prenatal yoga class with Elika because it was at a great time and I love supporting a small business in the community. That was a great class which led my husband and I to sign up for the Child Birth Prep class with Sabrina. We learned so much in the four week series and met some great people we still see in the community. The class helped us make decisions about our birth plan and gave us great resources for birth and beyond. I love that the breastfeeding class was included in the series. What a nice compliment and so, so informative. We definitely referred back to both classes in the early days after our son was born. We also did a one-day Labor Dance class which I loved and gave us great tips for pain management and positioning for laboring at home before heading the to the hospital. So useful! Now I go to Torrey's Wednesday mom and baby yoga and love it. It's a great class, she's a talented instructor, she's knowledgeable and warm! It's so valuable to connect with other moms and take time aside to think about your own body for a change! Oh! And TCB rented me a hospital grade breast pump right after birth. What a lifesaver. There wasn't another one available in the whole East Bay but Sabrina came through for us once again! I highly recommend Elika's Prenatal Yoga class at Then Comes Baby. Then Comes Baby is clean, inviting and cozy. They have everything you need for a yoga class - mats, blankets, blocks, etc. so you don't have to bring any supplies with you, and everything is kept very clean. I like that you can sign up for classes online, and also they allow you to do make-up classes. The 6 week prenatal yoga series was one of the things I looked forward to weekly throughout my pregnancy. As a teacher Elika is incredibly encouraging and informative. I love that each week had some sort of theme that resonated with pregnancy. At the end of the series we had a small party and a new mama would come back and share their birth story. I took a prenatal (birth prep) class and a free breastfeeding class at Then Comes Baby and really enjoyed both. The setting is calm and intimate and the instructors we had were great. Anna and Callais each brought great experience to their respective classes and I feel like my husband and I learned so much in a relatively short amount of time. There are so many classes here that I would like to take. The only downside is the parking in the area is spotty, it's grand avenue and accordingly it's best to come early to find parking. One person said they missed a class because of parking difficulty. read more

This is the resource all moms need! So far my experience has just been with the lactation consultation but that was a very positive experience. Very different from the LCs in the hospital. Sabrina is knowledgeable and authoritative AND patient and really listens. She was very supportive in follow up calls and conversations. I found Sabrina who runs Then Comes Baby when I was running into some breastfeeding challenges. She returned my call the day I called her and was available to meet me the following morning. Sabrina is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to lactation (as you might expect from an IBCLC) but she also has an incredible all-around understanding of the totality of your baby's path and developmental trajectory. This allows her to troubleshoot the issues, understand what else might be going on with your child and contextualize breastfeeding issues within the bigger picture. Sabrina also provides a balance between an evidence-based/data-driven perspective and the empathy you might expect and hope to receive from another mom who's been there herself. Love this place. We have taken a birthing class and a breastfeeding class (which comes with a great discount if you enroll in the birthing class). We liked these classes so much that we are now planning to take their CPR class and the "life with a newborn" workshops. Let me start with the birthing class. Anna, our teacher, is amazing. She weighs all the options, shows you the pros and cons of interventions, pain medications, home vs hospital birth and so on, with no judgment. With many other "experts", one can usually see which "side" the person is on, and, unfortunately, you end up feeling judged, but with Anna, even though she does not particularly hide where she stands, you do not feel judged at all. We have felt supported throughout the process. She even gives out her telephone number and tells the parents-to-be that we can call her any time! Finally, she is an amazing actor- with every personification of the labouring mother, we were shocked to "feel" the intensity, "see" the process ahead of us. The breastfeeding class was a one long session. Again, the teacher, Callai, was amazing. Imagine a 2,5 hr class after a long work day- she made the time go by so quickly. I had tons of questions and doubts about what I had been hearing/reading up until that point, and she, surprisingly, was able to cover it all! Outside of the class environment, *they offer prenatal massages (again, these come with a discount for everyone who is enrolled in their birthing class). *they have great resources - you can even rent a hospital-grade breast pump, apparently. *everyone is incredibly helpful. Elyse sends expansive notes before and after each class, includes helpful videos and links to articles, and they are responsive when you have a worry, concern, or question. I signed my partner and I up for the four week childbirth prep course because I wanted something more in depth than the one day hospital course, and because my mom has told me how helpful her Lamaze classes were when she had us. I searched everywhere for Lamaze but didn't find any classes and figured this one would cover similar principles. Unfortunately, this class was mostly lectures and slides on what to expect during labor and delivery, and didn't have much practical skills training at all. There was none of the sitting on the floor with your partner working on breathing or positioning techniques like you might be envisioning. In the entire 10-12 hour course, there was only about 60 minutes total of hands on practice, which was disappointing. It felt like most of the information we learned in the remaining time could have been self-taught from watching videos, reading books, and doing the hospital class. We left each class not feeling very prepared and ended up having to do a lot more research and watch instructional videos on our own to give ourselves the practice we felt we needed. For those of you who don't plan on reading or watching videos or doing any other self-prep, and have no idea what labor and delivery might entail, this class might be a good one stop shop to get that information. But for those who were hoping for hands on practice and more of an interactive workshop course, this class might not be right for you. The breastfeeding class that was included in the price was much more informative, with useful, straightforward advice on how to breastfeed successfully. read more

After the birth of my second child I started getting headaches. Sabrina connected me with her amazing massage therapists that worked on my spine. The headaches are gone! There should be a Then Comes Baby in every neighborhood! Parenting -- and getting out of the house with a young infant! -- would be so much easier if there were more safe, friendly, supportive spaces for parents to connect with each other, get new information, and decompress. I first discovered Then Comes Baby through its donation-based, drop-in breastfeeding support clinic. Up until that point, my outings with my then four-week-old had been largely dominated by the quest to find a decent place to change his diaper and nurse him. Walkiing into Then Comes Baby was a dream: comfy couches, plenty of floor space for older babies to crawl and play, a changing table stocked with wipes and diapers, healthy snacks, and even a scale to weigh him. I especially appreciated having access to a scale, since in those early days it can be tough to know if your baby is getting enough milk. Sabrina, the warm and knowledgeable founder of Then Comes Baby and the facilitator of the breastfeeding clinic, is quick to make everyone feel at home, helping them settle in with their babies as they arrive and then making sure they have ample time to speak and get feedback. She manages to fit in several in-depth conversations on the topics parents bring up while still allowing time for everyone to share their challenges. As a Lactation Consultant with a public health background, she knows what's she talking about! When you're struggling with clogged ducts, milk supply, latching, or the myriad of other issues breastfeeding mamas sometimes face, it's a relief to have her level of expert advice. She's also a lot of fun :) Since the breastfeeding clinics, I've visited Then Comes Baby for classes on everything from Tum E Time, to yoga, to introducing solid foods. I've taken advantage of the breastfeeding clinic, breastfeeding group, infant cranial sacral therapy, and private lactation consult. All have been very supportive and extremely competent and helpful. Then Comes Baby also has open lounge hours in the homey space to help build community and support the sanity of people (like me) who (as a new mom) just need to get out of the house sometimes. Then comes baby has been a vital and necessary supportive community as I become a mom. I wish I could give it a million stars! I was 4 weeks postpartum when I started coming to Then Comes Baby (TCB). I took the 6 week new mommy group and it was the best experience. I'm telling you, just being able to show up somewhere (even if I hadn't showered / eaten or was late!) was huge in building my confidence to go out into the world with my little one. The way Sabrina held space and guided the group discussions was like going to coffee with a good girlfriend; easy, caring and incredibly supportive. She gave us space to just talk, to express our emotions and gave us so much invaluable advice. Being able to just sit in a room with other moms that were going through the same thing I was going through was so special and made me feel like I wasn't alone. Also, to have a safe place to vent, cry, laugh, exchange ideas and here how other moms are doing it was surprisingly encouraging. I think you also grow a special bond with the woman who are going on this same journey. Our group still tries to meet once a month! Since the 6 week new mom's group I have become a TCB junkie and have taken the Tummy Time class, several of the mommy and me yoga class (so intimate and I LOVE TERRY!) and the baby massage + sign class. Plus, I hope to take more in the upcoming year! Every class I have taken has been an incredible learning experience which has helped me thrive as a new mom. I love applying all the techniques I have learned into our daily routines. On top of it all, my baby loves coming and seeing all the new faces, babies AND it gets us out of the house! I was introduced to Then Comes Baby and Sabrina through my pediatrician. My second son was born with a severe lip and tongue tie which made feeding very challenging and I needed help from a lactation consultant. He was struggling to put on weight and I was exhausted but I really wanted to try to nurse. Sabrina was a fantastic resource and a wealth of knowledge; if it wasn't for her support, things would have been a lot harder and we wouldn't have been able to feed as I had wanted. TCB is an oasis for new moms! I can't recommend the 1st Time Mom group to new moms highly enough. My experience in the group was sanity-saving. Every week I had a scheduled date with a group of 12 awesome women going through the same transition as me. Over 6 weeks we went from complete strangers to quickly being able to share everything from poop stories to our sex lives. Sabrina creates a supportive, fun, and no-judgement environment. Not to mention a place where you can breastfeed, change diapers, soothe your fussy baby...and that's what everyone else is doing, too. Now that the sessions are over our group is continuing to meet regularly, so I'm grateful to TCB for my new mama friends! Beautiful space and concept with a lot of potential, but I had a really mediocre experience- especially for the price paid! I attended the Moms Circle group with my baby, and was really disappointed with how the sessions were facilitated (or actually weren't!). The group was led by Sabrina and felt chaotic and unskilled- and as a result many topics or vulnerable feelings brought forth by new moms were not adequately addressed or explored. Sabrina brought little to no content to each session and none of the guest speakers promised ever materialized (e.g. someone from East Bay Music Together). The trash was often overflowing with dirty diapers, the snack offered was minimal (goldfish crackers for ravenous new moms?!) and the coffee pot was full of old coffee and mold during one session. It often felt like the facilitator had rolled out of bed and barely made it on time to make the space welcoming and professional. Though meeting other new moms was invaluable, I would only recommend this space if taking a class led by someone other than Sabrina. read more

There are not enough centers like this for parents really trying to navigate the birth scene these days. I'm so glad I found Then Comes Baby and Sabrina while I was pregnant with my first baby! My husband and I took a great infant CPR class and I also did Sabrina's new moms meet up. Oh - and I had a lactation consultation! It was what I needed in the beginning while breastfeeding. The meetup really helped me, and I'm sure I've found some new mom friends for life.
