Geffen is very academic, but without being cut throat competitive. The teachers are accessible, communicative and genuinely care about their students. The weekly wellness class focuses on things like mental well-being and stress management. I wish every school offered this. The emphasis is on the students at Geffen, not their wealthy or famous parents. School culture and decisions made by the administration are based on scientific research in order to provide a thoughtful and humane school experience. There is also a lot of diversity at this school - not just by race and culture, but by interests too. It's a great fusion of kids and it seems everyone can find people with similar passions and hobbies. My kid is very happy here and loves his school. He says everyone is really kind and the classes are interesting and engaging. He even likes the food!

As he goes off to college, I have no doubt that the knowledge, curiosity, persistence and leadership he has finessed during his time here, will not only push him to higher heights but will be the tools that he will continue to use to change his world & those he encounters for better. The Head of School leads with wisdom, compassion, empathy, purpose and strength which trickles down to the entire administration. The school has been very instrumental not only in my son's academic journey but in his overall life, tremendously shaping him into the fantastic man he has become. The school truly cares about the students mental health. Although we have completed our academic journey, Geffen Academy will always be the fabric we wear daily. We will forever be a part of this amazing top notch school & community. Once a bruin always a bruin! GO BRUINS

My husband and I sent out 3 children all IEP students , Audio processing, visual impairment and Autism and they all managed there own path threw a educational system that has evolved and changed , excepting students will various educational challenges that not long ago was not designed for students with specific challenges and thanks to the disability act and educational laws that opened doors and schools to be a least restrictive environment for all , students like our children now had more opportunities and the possibility of a better future. I have had great experiences and that's not say I haven't had my share of challenges in the past years with each of my individual children's educational experiences but I feel they had a great experience at Uni and the majority of the teachers and staff have been supportive id say it's probably 1 % of staff there who have given me reason? To question there ability to be fair and reasonable but the rest of the 99% have made my family feel like family . I will say any parents with children with IEP should educate themselves with educational laws and educational rights as some of my past experiences have thought me not all schools educators are not all well versed in educational rights and to ensure your children's educational plan and accommodations are being followed and supported, it's best to learn everything u can so u can advocate for the welfare of your child and remember to advocate for your child's rights with respect and kindness as your child's school educators may lack some of the knowledge you possess , most will be willing to work with you but in the case u run into the 1 % who resist then you need to be able to appropriately take proper action and defend your child's rights . I feel Uni has been a pillar for each of our children and I will be for ever proud of having chooses University high school to educate my children. Lastly I have to end with my warrior pride ! Spear to the paw warrior for ever love u Uni

They ask parents to pay for everything, like sports games, theatre shows, Had to pay 340$ for grad nite, and 130 (since i had senior package) but without it went from 150-200$ for prom. Another thing, they only care about attendance like another person said here years ago. They started to threaten us saying "no more than 7 absences or you can't walk the stage" I'm sure they're bluffing since majority of us seniors don't have 96% of atttendence. Plus they started that policy this year. Another thing, they lack school spirit. The school is dirty, the bathrooms get locked randomly throughout the day, there's no group or school life anything. It's just dreadful. Lastly, the teachers they have are horrible. Now, their teachers can be some of the most rudest. And they don't care even if you report them they don't face consequences. These teachers will listen how u had trauma and couldn't turn in an assignment in time and they'll tell you not to let it happen again. there's so much i wanna say but i can't stand this school. I just wanna say please don't let your child take ap english literature senior year, that class is bad. So is drawing because of Ms. I, and algebra 2 with Ms. M.

The school founder, Allan has created a community in which students, parents and teachers support each other. Special recognition to Hogan, Angel, and Jordan for the extended commitment to educating children. It's wonderful to be able to send our children to school, knowing that they will be safe, inspired to learn and thrive. My only complaint is that I didn't discover them earlier! My children's complaints are that their school year is not longer! (They followed the private school calendar, which is shorter than the LAUSD calendar). The school and the teachers are true gems.

I was around for most of the sessions and was impressed not only with the lessons provided (I learned a lot of things!) but the PATIENCE of each teacher. I heard the same questions asked repeatedly by students (and some parents!) and there was *never* even a hint of frustration from the team. WOW! Teaching over zoom is HARD so I can't give enough credit for the work they did! The activities were great, when the supply box first arrived I wasn't sure how the supplies in it were going to occupy my two squirrley kids for a week but it was like Mary Poppins magic carpet bag that just kept supplying what they needed! My kids want me to give a special shout out to Hogan who taught them (and a technologically challenged mom) how to "code" and my daughter wants Abe to know how much she liked the slime. Also they love Grey, Rosie and Alan, so basically every teacher they had they thought was the best teacher I'd highly recommend this group of educators for your homeschool or camp needs, they care about the kids and their excitement for what they teach transfers to the kids, even the littlest campers!

It's not too large, and the visibility from the seats enables you to easily see the stage. I always bring binoculars, so I can really see the performers sweat and their range of emotion. Last night, we had the privilege of watching Russell Malone and his quartet perform there. I brought my binoculars although we were sitting in the second row. From there, you could see the nuances of every song. The acoustics are good in this place, and the seats are very comfortable. My only criticism, is that I wish they had more places to sit while you are waiting to go into the theater. Because it is open seating, many people get there well ahead of the start time. A few more benches would be appreciated for those of us who don't like standing too long. Ruth Price does a wonderful job executing these events. She has the vibrancy and energy of a 20-year-old. It is admirable!

Inside the Spectrum Program: What They Don't Want You to Know…read more To the parents of New Roads School, I'm writing this because no one else will. Not the smiling admissions staff. Not the polished emails. Not the teachers who know something's wrong but look the other way. This isn't easy to say--but it needs to be said. Because what's happening in the Spectrum program is not care. It's not support. It's quiet, systematic harm dressed up as help. And it broke me in ways I'm still trying to undo. In middle school, I was diagnosed with autism. When I got into New Roads, I was placed in Spectrum. My family was told it was a safe space--a nurturing environment tailored for students like me. I believed them. I wanted to believe them. But not long after I started, I was re-evaluated. Turns out, I wasn't autistic after all. But that didn't matter. By then, I was already locked in--trapped under Elisa Schultz's watch. Once you're in, Spectrum doesn't let go. You don't "exit" the program--you disappear into it. It wraps itself around your life and convinces you that you need it, even when all it's doing is making you smaller. At first, I tried to play along. I was named grade-level ambassador. I met with new families. I made speeches. I wanted to believe I was helping build something good. But eventually, I did what Elisa can't stand--I told the truth. I started asking questions. I stood up for students who felt powerless. I spoke too loudly, too clearly. So they got rid of me. I was replaced quietly, like I'd become an inconvenience. But the worst moment came later--when a classmate I cared about came to me in tears. Elisa had called her a disgusting, sexist name--something that would get anyone else fired. We made the decision to speak out. And the moment we started talking, five staff members closed in on us. Not figuratively. They surrounded us. Physically. Like security guards. They told her it never happened. Over and over, until her hands were shaking and she started questioning her own memory. I stood there watching someone I admired unravel in real time. And I knew: this wasn't a "program." This was something darker. During COVID, I had a bad allergy flare-up. I stepped out of class to blow my nose in the hallway because I didn't want to disturb anyone. The Tesla classroom was right next to the bathroom. I wasn't sneaking off. I wasn't doing anything wrong. Elisa exploded. She screamed at me in front of everyone. Berated me for not blowing my nose in front of the class. As if I had broken some sacred, unspoken rule. I was embarrassed. I was sick. I was trying to handle my body and my space with some dignity--and she crushed that in one moment. No kindness. No understanding. Just public shame. What kind of "support program" does that? Spectrum charges over $13,000 a year on top of tuition. That money doesn't go toward student wellbeing. It goes toward building a system that punishes independence and feeds on fear. They don't care if you were misdiagnosed. They don't care if it's hurting you. They care about keeping your family's money. And your silence. There are others like me. I've spoken to six students--at least--who had stories like mine. Some gave me permission to speak. Most are too scared. That should tell you everything. Parents, you're being sold a lie. And it's packaged beautifully--with buzzwords, learning plans, and emotional jargon. But behind the curtain is something toxic. Something I wouldn't wish on anyone. Ask the questions they don't want you to ask. And when they try to talk around it, listen to what they're avoiding. This program nearly broke me. I'm writing this because I refuse to let it keep breaking people in silence. - A former Spectrum student who refuses to stay quiet

Rather than traditional classrooms, there is one beautiful, open learning space that allows children to move freely and engage deeply with their work.
