Boat house right next to the Georgetown waterfront a short walk from the Kennedy Center. Kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, and even hydrobikes available for rental here. Sculling classes for all levels are also offered here, check out http://boatingindc.com/thompson-boat-center and click on Classes! Parking lot is very small but you can park at one of the garages on the waterfront (either the main public garage or the one next to the Swedish Embassy) and just walk down. I've rented a sea kayak here several times, just to paddle around the Potomac or to get better photos of one of the crew regattas from the water vice the crowded dock - the staff is friendly and in addition to providing level-appropriate guidance (including safety requirements!), always willing to answer questions. Another (free) feature - the sunrises are among the more stunning in the D.C. region from TBC's vantage point! And before or afterwards, a leisurely meal at one of the Washington Harbor restaurants. A perfect capstone to a summer or fall outing solo, with family, or with friends!

Pricing is well worth the experience. Clean equipment, fast friendly service. Get outta DC stress for the same $ as a drink

If you have yet to see DC from the water, that's just gotta end now. Take off your tie, life's not that serious, and head to Thompson Boat House. Located right off Rock Creek Parkway and the Kennedy center, Thompson Boat Center is one of those rare gems in the city that gets you out of city chaos quickly and relatively I expensively. You can rent single or double kayaks here, and they charge hourly rates- check my pictures for pricing current as of this posting. After a quick check in, where you sign a waiver and deposit your drivers license, you can snag a small locker for 50 cents to store your purse, bike helmet, etc. then grab a life jacket (included with your rental), and head to the dock. Don't forget to bring your yellow receipt like I first did! When I visited, a staffer was wiping out boats, and he greeted me promptly, helped me in to my cute yellow kayak and offered some pointers. Then I was off. Make no mistake- this is a bit of a workout so dress accordingly- sandals with straps, a tank and shorts are perfect. I wouldn't do this in a chiffon dress before drinks at the Ritz. But that's just me! For novices, I suggest hugging the shore a bit, and paddling hard for 5 min then check your location. you can gain serious distance quickly on the water which makes a difference when you're paying by the hour OR you are overly ambitious and forget that you have to paddle back. Off the water, your arms a little sore, there's a great rush from the freedom you gain from the excursion. FYI- kids can boat, too, as long as they're accompanied by an adult in the boat. I hope you check out and enjoy Thompson Boat Center.

Ask the Community - Thompson Boat Center

How is the parking at the boat center?

It's a metered lot and very small so you can take your chances or to be safe, park at the public parking lot under the Swedish Embassy (right off Water Street under the Whitehurst) or the public garage at the Georgetown Waterfront.

Compared to other rental places on the Potomac, this is the cheapest, though I believe the prices fluctuate by season.

The driver cannot drink so determine before you go who is doing what and then the DD of the boat will go through a 15 min overview of the boat, steering, storages etc. Everyone must sign waivers online beforehand and the driver is required to take a test on boating safety and protocols. The boats have Bluetooth capabilities so bring your phone and connectors. Life jackets are required and depending on your time slot you'll have a good amount of time to go out and come back. Steering can be a little slow so as the driver you have to be aware of your surrounds and abide by boat etiquette. If you've never steered a motor or sail boat before you may want to take a lesson or hire a captain. Handling the boat in rough water would be difficult without sone experience. All in all we had a really great time and I'd rent again but do a longer session so we can go further down the canal. Definitely recommend for all my water enthusiasts.

I booked on Father's Day and there was a lot of double and triple bookings that took place which turned my 2-hr 1:30 booking into a 2-hr 2:15 booking. I had baby boomers in my party so explaining what was going on to them became a little tedious. Even with that hiccup, Benny & Vusi still delivered great customer service, they were helpful in instructing us how to use the boat, as well as personable and professional. Once on the water, I truly no longer cared about the scheduling situation. With that said, I will very much likely be back.

Even with my paddleboard exploding when inflating, it was a wonderful trip. The park entrance is fee-free, and there is plenty of parking just a few feet away from kayak launches, a small dock with rental kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddle boards. Cramming myself and my friend into our single remaining inflatable kayak worked out great. The Potomac has a lazy flow at the fastest, and there is a large area with little movement that makes lazy drifting easy and perfect for kids and those looking for more relaxation than paddling. Absolutely great spot to go after work or with the family on weekends!

I am writing for three reasons. I have revised this review, because my description of the parking was only partly accurate. That is due to my stupidity, looking primarily in the summer -- I was able to perceive more clearly when the leaves were off the trees, in the winter. I just came back from the venue moments ago. So I can be much more clear. First, there are two parking lots. There is a tiny one right there. I would not count on it. The one time, I flew on a redeye flight just as the pandemic was ending, to run a half marathon. I am not in the shape needed to do that anymore. I arrived maybe 6am. That meant I could find a space and take a quick nap. But fifty feet down the dirt road is a tunnel. It is so cramped you might not believe your car will fit. But that is what it is for. A sedan will do fine; an oversize SUV, maybe not. It's also two way with room for only one car width. This passage leads across the canal. There is a much bigger parking lot. I have had good luck. I would bet it fills up on busy days later in the morning, but in the 7am range it's half empty. Usually, I Uber to this destination or I park in the neighborhood, and walk the remaining half mile. Second, the turn into the parking lot is tight. I cannot describe it. It'd be easier to draw a diagram. It's more than two roads meeting; the angles also are oblique. People don't understand how the intersection works. That is aggravating. I try not to be judgmental. Probably there will be an accident sometime, and that will lead to reform. My wife refuses to drive down here. The narrowness of the sidewalk renders it dangerous for pedestrians. Please, be careful. Third, they have restrooms. They are kept clean. This is a huge boon. I am always on the lookout for public restrooms of high quality. I share for the benefit of all.

Other groups were waving from their boats, the monuments provided poppin' views/backdrops throughout the ride, and we didn't even actually haaaave to paddle the whole time! I would definitely get a group together and go out on the water with this company again! A lit DC summer experience!

Well, this year, we put it on our calendars well in advance, and made a point to head down for the Parade of Lights. So, first of all - if you haven't heard of it before, the Parade of Lights is on the Potomac...as in, it's a parade of *boats*. The parade starts off in Old Town Alexandria (down by the Torpedo Factory), and ends up on the DC Wharf on Water Street, where all the boats dock, and there is a big awesome after party. We opted to watch from Alexandria, as we weren't really in the mood to deal with drunken revelers (I know, so unusual for me!), and I think we were ultimately glad we did. Although the docks were crowded (seriously, get there early and stake a spot!), the view was perfect. The boats were all decked out in lights, each boat with a different theme (although there should be a drinking game...whenever a boat's theme is "Christmas", you do a shot. You'll be drunk 15 minutes into this thing). So the good: The event started right on time. The kick off was supposed to be at 5:30, and the first boat pulled into view at 5:35. Awesome. Some of the boats are decked out incredibly creatively It's not your usual parade There was a professional radio DJ (I didn't catch which one...Tommy something?) that provided the commentary and filled up the time when the boats lagged behind The not so good: The DJ that was providing the commentary ran out of material about 1/3 of the way through and he started to read off tweets...which I pretty much loathe (even though I'm a huge fan of twitter) Some of the boats really lagged, so there were periods where you would just stand there in the cold waiting for another boat to pull into view It is COLD. It's the beginning of December, on the water, at night. OMG. SO. COLD. All that being said, it's a quirky, off the wall little event, and I love the creativity that the captains put into their boats. Definitely fun and weird.
