A little off the beaten track but well worth a visit. Originally stopped here for a coffee but the…read morerange of fresh food on offer meant I decided to have lunch here. The tarragon chicken and rhubarb and red currant crumble with Earl Grey ice cream were delicious and the cost very reasonable. I dined outside to make the most of the sunshine and surroundings. A quick tour of the walled garden, where the cafe is sited, revealed that most of the ingredients I had eaten were sourced only a few yards away. Fruits growing in the garden included apple, pear, raspberries, blackcurrants, apricots and kiwi fruit and I'll definitely be making a return visit here. A real hidden gem

This place stands out from the rest, however, for its range of miniature 'Show Gardens' where they offer ideas and inspiration for your own garden, including some interesting designs and layouts, use of a variety of materials, and different planting styles. I was also quite impressed by their range of plant pots, both for indoors and outdoors, which included more choice (in terms of colours, styles and materials) than many of their competitors. They're also good for trellis, patio furniture and garden tools. There's a section selling aquatics, another selling gifts (some of questionable style, in my view, but each to their own!), plus a cafe.

A truly fantastic garden centre…read more It's got a fabulous range of plants but also lots of very interesting crafts, tools and other things to buy that don't fall within that same standard range you get from a lot of garden centres. The Christmas displays and products are a highlight too and they make a real effort to display them in a really enjoyable way. And if you've got a houseplant addiction, this is probably the best place in the area to visit as the choice and quality is superb. The commitment to sustainability and giving customers the information they need is also amongst the best I've ever seen in the garden centre. But it's the staff that truly make it a great place to shop - very knowledgeable, excellent help if you have any issues at all with anything you buy and just generally enjoyable to meet. Special shout out to Adam for his expert knowledge in helping an ailing plant I had. Yes it's not the cheapest but it's worth the little bit extra as everything is such high quality that it's bound to last. They also guarantee their plants which a lot of places now don't.

They also sell some larger items such as patio slabs, fence panels etc. They offer local delivery but there is a charge. There are usually a couple of young members of staff outside to assist with loading the car and getting items down from on racks. The staff are all very helpful and polite although they do look very scruffy but I guess it is a job where you would get very dirty. There is plenty of parking available at the shop. Despite this, I hesitate to give them 5 stars because although some of the staff are really friendly and helpful, others can be a bit 'offish' and on the few occasions when we've had problems with stuff, although we haven't caved in, both myself and my husband have felt that a bit under pressure to back down and accept what had been supplied.

First of all i would like to aplogise for replying to your review in a defensive and aggressive manner. I am a small business owner myself and to hear people really badmouthing such businesses as By the Fire kind of got my back up.
