Our grandchildren had previously had an annual membership and we assumed that they were still members and just checked them in with our family. My daughter and I were in the SHOWER ROOM trying to get ready to go into the pool when one of their employees, Ms.Naperella, walked through in her shoes which is not allowed, and asked me about a couple of the names I had written down on the sheet. I told her that they were with our party in the pool. We were harassed by her two more times while we were there and she never stated once what her problem was. All she would have had to say was that the 2 grandchildren that we had with us were not members anymore and we had to pay for them but instead she insisted on harassing us the whole time we were there. I wrote a letter to the pool manager and never received an apology from them. So I am assuming that they would rather loose members who have been with them for 30 years than apologize for the conduct of an employee who was not intelligent enough to simply tell us what the problem was. We could have paid the $10 for the grandkids and the whole thing would have been resolved but now they have lost two family memberships for years to come. Not a good business decision at all. Would not recommend belonging to this association unless you like being harassed by their employees when you are simply trying to have a relaxing evening.

The downtown had one gallery that we visited. Everything else was weak. I get that there are homeless people, but your downtown is not where they should be. The Chippewa Valley Railroad operates on a loop in Carson Park, across the street from the historic…read morebaseball stadium. Appropriate for kids of all ages, especially those of us with grey hair that remember the real thing, the railroad operates passenger trains pulled by live steam or "diesel" power. The diesel, actually a model of GM's famous F series locomotives, runs on a Wisconsin internal combustion engine. It was built by the Miniature Train Company sometime between 1948 and 1956. It is one of at least 5 such trains operating in Wisconsin. (Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, Green Bay, Wausau and here.) Chippewa Valley Railroad goes the typical MTC railroad one better with live steam. You can ride the MTC train or a live steam train. The loop is about a half mile and takes you along the bluff above the Chippewa River, past a picnic shelter, over the road that takes you to the depot, past a silent observer (keep your eyes peeled!) before returning to the station. When your train arrives, the next one departs. The trains were obviously built for little people but there is an open-air gondola that's a little more comfortable for larger folks. It's pulled behind the steam engine. Rides are reasonably priced, considering ticket sales are the only source of income for this rolling museum. It is manned by volunteers who love railroads, and you can tell when you speak with any of the staff. The Chippewa Valley Railroad only operates during the summer and only on Sundays and July 4. You might think it's only for kids. In that case, borrow a couple of kids from the neighbors and go ride the train.

You do need your state park sticker or at least a day sticker to enjoy this otherwise it is free. Very affordable way to spend the day and take in nature. We decided to take a glorious walk on the trails. We encountered some wildlife and I almost had a heart attack when after navigating a big ass hill almost stepped on a garter snake when i was trying to cool down --that little sucker was slithering among the leaves. YIKES!!! It is a mostly wooded dirt trail that is surrounded by many smaller bodies of water on both sides. So cool....the sun shines down between the taller trees and you can hear nothing but the wind, the birds, and some bullfrogs. LOVED IT!

IT'S IN THE CHIPPEWA MORAINE STATE RECREATION AREA ABOUT 2 MILES EAST OF THE INTERSECTION OF HWY M AND HWY 40. The Chippewa Moraine Ice Age Unit, aka Chippewa Moraine State Recreation Area, has an excellent interpretive center on a beautiful hillside. My wife and I walked one of the trails on a beautiful, crisp fall day in September. Some of the trees have started to change. There are 3 trails that start on the north side of the David R. Obey Ice Age Interpretive Center. Rolling terrain, the breeze rustling the tree leaves, splashes of sun on the forest floor, little kettle lakes: awesome northern forest beauty! Now a little history lesson. From what I know the trail started in the mid 1900's thanks to a guy named Zillmer. A variety of people pursued the idea: they are called the Ice Age Trail Alliance. There is now over a 1000 miles of trail in Wisconsin. Kudos to them! The Interpretive Center is extremely well done. It has quite a bit of hands on things to do that would be great for elementary school kids. (This includes holding a garter snake.) Junior high and high school kids who enjoy geology and animals would like it too. The interp. center is a couple of miles east of the intersection of Highways 40 and M near New Auburn. The staff member on duty was Jeanette: knowledgeable, friendly and helpful Free; no trail fees. It's so beautiful it deserved a donation.
