First of all, I read horrible reviews about this place on many sites and all I can say is that there appears to be a bunch of people who really need to go back home and sell their rig. I've seen lots of places with much worse roads, much less secure neighborhoods, and the staff here is friendly as all heck.
First is the roads. Pot holes? Show me a gravel road that doesn't have them and none of them here rate anything higher than annoying.
Second, we're in the middle of nowhere so unless you expect some gang banger to drive up from Detroit, there's really no way to feel unsafe unless Michigan is some sort of hole to begin with... doesn't seem to be, but maybe they know something that I don't.
Finally the staff seem to be putting up with a bunch of really rude people and perhaps not handling it with complete aplomb. I'm originally from Wisconsin so I know that northerners tend to get surly where southerners seem to get quiet and icily polite. When I arrived the ranger was almost in tears because of the last customer being so rude. There's no excuse for treating someone like that.
Are there problems here? Yes. It's a really old park in a part of the country where the ground will freeze several feet down. I pulled into A43 and discovered the 30 amp breaker is more Iike a 25 amp breaker because a good 30amp breaker will let me run the air, hot water, and TV without tripping. Ok, so I'll use the gas hot water while we're here. Also, the water doesn't work at the site and I had to connect to the neighbors spigot, but pressure is really decent, so no worries.
We drove around the campground and there are some sites that are just dirt & grass, so parking a big rig on those sites is just dumb. And the number of "tight" spaces can be counted on one hand. Again, why would you park a big rig with slides in those sites. Also, most TT parks will let you move to another site so there is no reason to stay in a bad spot. TT has been fixing up parks for the last few years and I expect St Claire to be on the list. They have a beautiful new pool and the laundry facilities are not old. The park is decently groomed and I think the BS I've seen in reviews ranks at the lowest form of human drivel.
This place is decent for an old TT park waiting to be renovated, and anyone who says otherwise should go back to their country club and leave the rest of us alone. If I'm sounding rude in anyway it's because I'm getting tired of all of the whining about KOA and TT parks. If you don't like them, stay somewhere else.
BTW, Verizon is 1-2 bars but my MiFi with external antenna can stream shows to my Apple TV in SD mode. T-mobile is 2-3 bars bars and I expect no problems connecting for work.
If you want to complain about something, complain about I-75 / I-94 from the MI boarder to north of Detroit. We had to slow down to 50mph lest we shake the rig apart or ruin our kidneys. THAT was a bloody awful drive that I will not take again until someone can guarantee they've fixed the entire run. Also, I'm usually pretty generous with my ratings so the low rating is for corporate not paying closer attention to this park. A little more gravel along with a handyman with a modest budget could make a real difference. read more
