I've been coming to this gym for a little over a year, and it has been a positive influence in my life. I came in with no grappling or combat sport experience, and after about 4 months of getting my butt kicked I started to put pieces together. The instructors are great here, I feel comfortable asking questions if I don't get something. I've lost about 20lbs since starting, BJJ is a great workout. I had the pleasure of dropping by and getting some training in (visiting from Phoenix, AZ). Professor Bill and his students were very welcoming. We were able to train a good balance of takedowns and transitioning to half guard positions. Completely inflexible management practices. One would expect that long term contracts for young children would have an out clause. I would not recommend this martial art school to anyone I care about. Ownership refused to end the contract after my kid was traumatized air attending classes at Threshold. As a parent, I got too excited about my kid's initial enthusiasm in jujitsu and signed on to a multi year deal. Huge, costly mistake. Unfortunate that Threshold management takes advantage of these situations. read more

Threshold Martial Arts is without a doubt the best school! My 2 kids are training BJJ and I am doing Kickboxing. Every week my kids cannot contain their excitement to go to the classes and learn new skills. They love the place, the instructors, the techniques and the enthusiasm. Even my very artsy daughter gave up her ballet classes for Jiu-Jitsu at Threshold Martial Arts. Coach Chris has a ton of patience and is wonderful with the kids. Professor Bill is so knowable, surprisingly sweet (looks so tough) and has the no-nonsense attitude that I love! It is a tough, but fun and welcoming environment that provides solid martial arts education for the little ones and for the adults. I've been kickboxing here for over a year a now, and love it. Bill's classes in the morning are challenging and drive strong focus on improving fundamentals. Ed's classes in the evening are equally great and add advanced technique, as well as how to work the rules of Muay Thai to your advantage. I love that Ed is obsessed with Muay Thai. He gladly spews out any knowledge he has to pass down when asked. He even gets caught up after class because the conversation is interesting. It's nice to come to class when someone is that passionate. Another great teacher that anyone level 1 and above gets to meet is Tim. He teaches the advanced classes once a month and offers a variety of advance technique to add to the arsenal. I forget his exact credentials so this isn't going to do him justice, but he has shared many stories about fighters going in the ring, and knows how exactly to score and keep your cool in the ring, amongst many other things. Overall the place gets mopped and cleaned every day and is in great condition. Both Bill and Ed are very conscious of cleanliness and safety. I've never met a bad person here. Everyone I have practiced with has been very nice. The class sizes vary. Sometimes there are 3 people there, sometimes even 11 depending on people's availability. So you get a nice variety of people to train with and instructor assistance. I usually try to team up with someone about my rank and height. Sometimes, if we have new people I like to team up with them to help them develop good fundamentals. Someone did that for me when I first joined and it helped a lot. Thanks Sam. What I also really liked is how Bill explained the contract to me in the beginning. He went over the whole thing and focused on the ways to quit. 1. In the state of Illinois, if you move over 25 miles the contract becomes void. 2. If the dojo is closed for a month the contract can be voided. He did mention that laziness unfortunately is not a reason to be able to break the contract. I signed up for 2 years because to me martial arts is a way of life, and that gave me the best rate. I recommend for anyone who is not sure if martial arts if for them or not to sign up for 6 months. This is because the first month you're just getting down technique, and your body is just getting adjusted to this level of physical activity. By the 4th month you will know for sure what you want to do. If you keep it up, by 4-6 months you can test for level 1. There are currently 13-14 classes per week as well as open mat once a week. Anyone who signs up is able to take all of those classes, but I pretty much max out at 4 per week. My work schedule is flexible, so it's nice that there are evening and morning classes that are both great. read more

First off, I have to say that everyone at the gym is extremely welcoming and very friendly. I am new at this but the instructors are patient, knowledgeable and take the time to go over the drills .The fact that they have day classes and evening classes it's appreciated by those who work a flexible schedule. At first I thought that kickboxing it's just technique, but the classes are actually a mix of self defense, discipline, develop strong cardio and improve focus. Be careful, this business charges you for time you are not there. My kids were in Jiu Jitsu and ended up not liking it. I made them finish out the month. I had e-mailed the owner, Bill, to let him know that we would no longer be coming for the following month. The payment was already deducted from my account and he would not refund my money. He bullied me when I talked to him about the charge. He said he was not giving me back my money even though I have e-mail documentation letting him know we were dropping the class. I am seeking legal advice on the matter. DON'T GO HERE! Bad bullying and bad business ethics. I was not trying to do anything, but get MY money back. read more

At first, we had our older son signed up for Jiu-Jitsu. After 3 years of being a spectator, our younger son wanted to join in. The classes are very helpful to teach the kids discipline, self defense, respect, and strategy. We usually attend 2-3 times per week. Both of our boys look forward to the classes. This is my second 5-star review of Threshold Martial Arts! My first review was regarding our five year old son's positive experience. I am now reviewing my own positive experience. My husband is a police officer and urged me to sign up for a women's self defense class being offered at Threshold. I was hesitant because I work and have two young kids, but I thought it would be a good experience and it has far surpassed my expectations. The instructor is a Jiu Jitsu black belt and the owner of the gym who really cares about teaching and keeping people safe. I could go on and on, but bottom line is this is a really family friendly place - so much more than we expected. Even with my limited free time, I am making it a priority to continue my training.
