Despite this, I was able to put records that I really wanted on hold that they would display on their Instagram (@noisesanfrancisco) and they have been holding them for me since then! I've thought long and hard about who I should write my first ever yelp review for, and after visiting Noise three times in the past two months (I may have a problem), it became a no brainer. I've lived in SF for just over two years, and a top priority for me when I move to a new city is to find a great record store. There's a handful of great record stores in SF, but none of them had me dying to go back. Either it was a lack of selection, a lack of character, a lack of a welcoming feeling, or flat out the prices were higher than I thought they should be. If I'm Goldilocks, then Noise is the baby bear, because they're juuuuuuust right. It's never crowded, has a great and eclectic selection of classic rock, jazz, soul, and reggae (emphasis on the classic rock & jazz), and the prices are fair. You can find The Marshall Tucker Band for $7, and find a original Stones Sticky Fingers (working zipper and all) for $35. I found Noise via yelp, because for someone who doesn't live in the outer Richmond, I likely never would have found out about this place, and I'm so glad I did. The level of organization that Sara and co. put into the store is second to none. Looking for Bob Segar - Night Moves (because you should be)?...Sara knows if she has it and exactly where it is. Pro tip - follow them on Instagram because Sara posts their new arrivals and will hold something for you if you ask her in the comments. I could ramble all day about how great Noise is, but instead, do yourself a favor, trek it to the outer Richmond, maybe grab a burrito at Chino's across the street, and spend a few hours listening to what Sara is spinning and pick up some black vinyl gold! read more

Just came here on a Sunday afternoon with my daughter. I was hoping to find some old 80s stuff which they had tons of! Unfortunately, I couldn't find what I wanted and embarrassingly couldn't remember some other ones I wanted. I didn't come out empty handed though! Found an early 90s r&b group that I have not heard from in a long time and had to grab it. It was cheap too! Other tidbits, the owner is a native of SF, just like me. The cool thing about Outer Richmond is that once in a while you run into cool local businesses like Noise. It's a small vinyl shop out by the Ocean Beach. Every Sunday afternoon they have free jazz performance that range from Standards to avant-garde. I really have no idea how they can make money/survive, but I really appreciate their passion for keeping it going. Come by on Sunday (or any day) to check out Noise. Fantastic record store with great art on the wall that is for sale. They also have a live jazz party every Sunday from 2-6 p.m.! Top flight jazz musicians can be heard, led by the proprietor Danny Brown; and he sure plays a mean tenor!!! This beautiful little business is a family affair, with his mother and sister also involved. Come out to support this wonderful business, and there is no cover for the Sunday Jazz party, so be sure to bring some loose cash for the tip jar! read more

A neighborhood indie record store can only mean gentrification and a lot of hipsters invading, right? Not necessarily though Balboa Street now also has two new bakeries, Cassava, etc. That's all fine by me as long as it doesn't start feeling like The Mission, since it also has Noise! Noise started as a co-op and has morphed into a very well curated music destination for used and new vinyl all farily priced, turntables (including one where you can test your music on an old-school sound system) and live Jazz concerts on Sunday. Noise is the concept of a son - Daniel who gigs all over the Bay Area playing tenor sax. And Sara - his mom - a true creative soul and wealth of true SFO cultural history, whose photography hangs in the shop along with many other local artists. I found a few great things there - and as much as I hate this word, the records are well-curated! I'll be back just to talk to Sara and Daniel about music and art and San Francisco and of course to get some more records I definitely don't need! read more

LOVE this place! They are always fully stocked with things you didn't even realize you collection was needing. The vibe is so inviting that you could easily spend an afternoon listening to vinyl (which you will buy!), chatting with Sara, who is so warm and cool, you'll feel very welcome to come back. The store owners mother is not a pleasant person. I simply asked her if a record that was almost 90% unplayable and warped was negotiable. She then basically yelled "If you don't want the record then put it back." I told her to chill out because there was other people in this tiny shop who were all looking at us then I immediately left. Aside from the horrible experience the records were meh. Not much variety mostly old pop/rock and some punk, I'm sure I could have found a few gems if I looked for longer. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt since the interaction was not with the actual store owner but the mother and my visit was cut short because of literally being yelled at... not a bad shop in terms of quality but 100% better shops in the city with better customer service. read more

My Honey and I both had Friday off and decided to go to the cliff house for a cocktail(We are eastbay), of course the cliff had no parking so we went for a cruise and end up at the Beach Chalet. Afte a drink or two I started to get an itch for vinyl and had previously searched on yelp and had seen that Noise was very close by. Parking was easy and the store was as expected. Lots of nicely organized vinyl with a mix of artwork and photography on the wall a mini stage in the back and vintage equipment here and there for sale. Main selling point is the excellent and so friendly service that Sara provided us. Very warm personality and knowledge of her inventory. With a back ground in local music history it was nice to talk with her. she helped me sort through the vinyl in half the time by focusing on my interest in Greatest Hits and Best of vinyl's from the 70, 80 and 90's. Sara kindly worked on side as I did the other sharing potential buys. The prices are so reasonable and a little bit ridiculous. Johnny Mathis GHs for 95 cents!! After I got home and cleaned that beauty is was amazing on my higher end system. Another favorite that later brought tears to my finance was Carly Simon's Great Hits. So many family memories for her and it was so inexpensive. Sara and her son have the right approach to their record store. Super organized, great service and perfect pricing. I was very happy with my haul and excited to get them home(Foreigner GHs, Johnny Mathis, Carly Simon, Linda Rondstat...)....will return soon with more time to spend and more smiles. read more

This is such a cool space! We have walked by a million times living in the neighborhood and decided to stop in finally this Sunday. Not only do they have some killer jams coming through the speaker, they had some awesome art work on display. The back of the shop is an art studio where you can take classes, I'll be signing up soon! The artist who conducts the classes is using the space as a gallery as well. The art was approachable in price and very well curated (with local artists). We loved chatting with the owners mom, who was keeping the place open while he was out on double duty musician gigs! I just started collecting vinyl and so far have shopped at a handful of stores, including a couple mega-name shops and a few local/indie spots. Today was my first time at Noise, and hands down this is my favorite shop and I'm certain I'll be coming here often. The atmosphere is inviting and relaxed all thanks to Sara, who I gather from other reviews is the owner's mom. The way she asked if anyone needed help or wanted to listen to anything was very genuine, meaning it wasn't the typical I'm-asking-because-it's-my-job-and-need-to-let-you-know-I-see-you. I got the vibe she's very well known and liked in the neighborhood just from the couple of people who popped in just to say hi to her. The records are nicely organized by genre in typical alpha order BUT I especially appreciated that they were further alphabetized within the letter category!! A+++! What took my experience to another level was the handwritten notes on some albums with a brief description and rating. Because of these notes I picked up 2 albums I've never heard of and I'm listening to one of them as I type--so far definitely worth the blind buy! Turns out Sara wrote the notes...how cool is that?! I could easily spend several hours here. During checkout Sara let me know to come in with a list next time or simply email the shop and they'll do their best to help with my wishlist. Popped in randomly there once a few years ago. The prices I did see were modestly higher than musicstack or discogs, or even local favorite groove records on market. Lots of dj dance singles more than other genres. I didn't find anything rare or out of the ordinary, or not so much as rare but pleasantly surprising as I have browsing used records at a few other SF stores (Groove, Rooky Ricardo's, Recycled Records (rip)). Felt like it was mostly discarded junk as opposed to a curated lavishly interesting assortment of genres and "check this out if you like this" kind of real music-junkie-offerings. More like a garage sale stock of heavily picked through unwanted stuff. Maybe they were just cleaned out at the time. The woman that was there seemed rather unfriendly to me although she struck up a conversation but maybe she was just having a bad day. Bonus star for supporting the local music scene and doing concerts on weekends as others mentioned. read more

Recently, I returned for a much needed weeklong vacation in San Francisco, and I decided to check out as many record shops as I could possibly explore. I went to Tunnel Records, Amoeba, 1-2-3-4- Go!, Community Thrift in the Mission District, Originals Vinyl, and Noise. Out of all these, Noise was my absolute favorite. There is an especially sharp contrast between the Amoeba experience and the Noise experience. Whereas at Amoeba, there was a TON of (pricey) stuff--but not a great selection, really unspectacular inventory--which consumed three hours of my time just to look through records, and all I left with was a massive headache; Noise was much smaller, totally chill with genuinely friendly staff, and (affordable) records that I wanted to buy across several genres. I bought a dozen records at Noise, and I've been so happy with them--very clean vinyl, excellent sound on the turntable. Sara was happy to be the DJ for her customers, and my goodness, she knows great music and how to keep her customers happy. The place can be a little cramped, but it's totally worth it. I'll be back there on my next vacation. read more
