My ten day stay in the 2nd floor North wing (after breaking a hip) was stellar. The facility was…read moreimmaculate. My room was large, with a lovely view of trees and the Chugach Mountains. Food was tasty, with some creative variations. Nurses and CNAs were quickly responsive to my needs and often proactive in offering help to make me more comfortable, for example, timing tylenol and ibuprofin 45 minutes before my arduous PT visits. The physical and occupational therapists were particularly impressive in personalizing my exercises to prepare me for my home situation, such as getting in and out of a truck, an air taxi, stairs at home. It was important to me to be able to get outside for fresh air every day, and my care team allowed me to wheel myself outside after the third day (with an alarm mat on the seat). The care at St. Elias exceeded my expectations and I have said so to many people since my discharge. Highly recommended. My only question is that they discharged me with no physical therapy exercise sheet and no dietitian's recommendations for increasing protein, etc to help facilitate bone regrowth.

They are conveniently located on Old Seward across from Kendall Lexus/Toyota. My son does occupational therapy, speech therapy and physical therapy. All staff I've encountered have been kind and helpful. We've been lucky to have the same amazing PT therapist our entire time with AFK. Although we've had a few OT and Speech Therapists, AFK does a great job of transitioning the children and bringing new therapists up to speed. It seems there's not enough therapists for the amount of children needing therapy. Therefore, these therapies are hard to come by and even harder to get on a reoccurring schedule. AFK does an amazing job of working with your availability, guiding you through the entire process from paperwork to intake and keeping you updated with everything a long the way. I appreciate that most communication is done via text and email. I also appreciate AFK having a main office line you can always contact but as parents/caregivers, being able to contact our kids' therapists directly, is priceless. The clinic is larger than it seems from the outside. It is very clean. I believe AFK houses the only sensory gym Anchorage has (that I know of). All kinds of puzzles, games, ball pits, swings, etc fill this place. Since Covid, AFK has kept their lobby mostly closed to parents/caregivers. Therefore, therapists pick-up and deliver children to their vehicles. If you are invited inside you are required to wear a mask. I really appreciate how they've done everything to follow mandates without completely closing down. They have truly been a constant in our lives.

My visit wasn't a number, I wasn't rushed in and out of the process. Dr Hall took her time and wasn't pressured at all to get to another patient. I didn't mind waiting a little while in the exam room once it was apparent that's how this clinic works. I appreciate that the staff takes their time with each patient. It was generally kept quiet and felt stress/chaos free. That was important to me as dad didn't respond well to unnecessary noise or conflict. He had his own room and personal space that was designed to feel like there was ownership and autonomy in living. Affording a continuous environment that was his, and while he was attended to, it was his and there was pride in this. He was well cared for regarding his diet and was kept clean and comfortable. When dad passed and the facility wanted our family to transfer him asap to the funeral home, we rather abruptly explained that he would remain present until rites were performed and visitors had their opportunity to sit with him and the family. We really pushed the limit on this and they were respectful at all times and didn't rush us past the initial announcement of his passing. That grace is what I will remember most. When we finally dissolved into dysfunction, staff continued to treat us gently and never outwardly judged us. We were definitely a challenge. Overall they expertly cared for my precious father and extended that compassion to my family. I am so glad he was able to pass safely. He deserved only the best.
