A lot effort went into telling the story of Grand Marais' Civilian Conservation Corps camp, which during the Depression of the 1930s, provided an escape from urban unemployment for many young men. (If only we had a congress willing to enact such programs today.) A replica CCC camp barracks facade features recorded reminiscences from former CCC members and provides a much-needed reminder of how former generations were able to respond to a national crisis. Kids will enjoy sitting in the vintage schoolroom with inkwell holes in the desks. My daughter commented, "these are more comfortable than our desks at school." All in all, the visit well repaid the few dollars and few minutes we spent there.

The visitor center is two stories and according to the rangers there, has the highest rated park film of any in the parks. There's also a fort about a hundred yards outside the visitor center which has events and other info. It's all free to visit.

St Francis Xavier Catholic / Chippewa Church- Driving by you think oh what a cute, quaint church…read more At least that's what I always thought until I actually visited. Walking up the steps and into the church it was very Inviting. The high blue ceiling gave the place great energy. We sat down in the pews and had a conversation including discussing stations of the cross. We learned that no religious type service has been performed since 1936. Walking to the back of the church we found a font of history with Alta Mcquarter. We learned so much from her about the fire, people settling in Lutsen (White Sky) and about the book. It's impressive the documentation there is of the people trough time. The time it must take her to go through obituaries, cut them out and add to book is a true dedication. We are lucky to have her. I highly recommend a stop. Could have stayed all day in the peaceful pew but really talking with Alta and Gary was the proverbial ice to the sore knee I needed after the Voyageur 5K. Thank you.
