The Maeser Way or the Highway: When Rigid Policy Undermines Linguistic Preparation…read moreI am writing this review so families coming from Alpine School District dual-language immersion (DLI) programs, particularly those at neighboring DLI elementary, junior high, and high schools, understand an important reality before accepting enrollment at Maeser. My student was offered admission to Maeser after completing several years in an Alpine School District DLI program. That experience represents sustained academic instruction in a living, globally spoken language. Before accepting the offer, I contacted the LEA Administrator at Maeser to ask a straightforward question: since flexibility for DLI students reportedly existed at Maeser in the past, why does it no longer exist? Historically, DLI students attending Maeser were permitted to leave campus to attend immersion classes at nearby junior high and high schools. I was told there is now "no flexibility." Latin is mandatory for all seventh graders, with no exceptions. When I followed up to ask what prompted this policy change, that question went unanswered. In practice, this policy requires students who have invested years in mastering a Romance language to abandon that academic trajectory entirely. There is no alternative pathway, no transition option, and no acknowledgment that these students bring precisely the kind of linguistic foundation the school claims to value. Maeser promotes Latin as foundational for grammar, logic, and etymology, yet students already fluent in a Romance language derived from Latin are told that background cannot be accommodated in any way. I was further advised that my student's DLI language could simply be "continued at home." Language immersion does not function that way. Fluency developed through daily structured instruction, academic accountability, and peer interaction cannot be maintained through casual practice, particularly in households where the language is not spoken. Replacing a formal immersion program with informal at-home exposure is not academically equivalent. Schools are free to design their curriculum. However, when a rigid policy effectively excludes a defined group of academically prepared students from continuing their established educational pathway without a transparent explanation for the change, families deserve to know. This experience revealed a disconnect between Maeser's stated commitment to academic rigor and its unwillingness to engage with students who bring significant prior preparation. A truly rigorous academic model should be capable of examining reasonable pathways for well-prepared students rather than closing the door entirely. Charter schools operate with significant autonomy. That autonomy can foster innovation, but it can also leave families with little recourse when inflexible policies narrow access. In this case, the message was clear: the "Maeser way" is nonnegotiable, regardless of a student's preparation or prior academic investment. Families deserve to understand that reality before enrolling. As for our family, we will choose another school, one that demonstrates openness and a genuine understanding of the value of a comprehensive education. Our student will continue in the DLI program through college, which represents a significant academic accomplishment. Expecting students to abandon years of linguistic study without compelling academic justification does not reflect educational flexibility or intellectual depth. Families considering Maeser should be fully informed of these limitations before making their decision.

There have been repeated concerns regarding bullying, including obvious signs that have been reported by parents multiple times, yet there has been little to no meaningful action or communication about what is being done to address it. Parents should not have to repeatedly advocate for their children's safety or physically go into the school just to get a response. The Assistant Director has been particularly difficult to communicate with. There is very little proactive communication with parents, and it often feels like families are left to chase down answers rather than the administration taking responsibility for keeping parents informed. There are also concerns with the overall culture and professionalism. Some teachers seem more focused on being their students' friends than maintaining the structure, boundaries, and authority that children need from their teachers. Having a positive relationship with students is important, but being liked should never come before being a responsible educator. Another major concern is the quality of the food being served. We have seen or been made aware of food being served to children that was moldy or not completely cooked. This is not something that should ever be considered acceptable in a school setting. Families are expected to pay significant amounts, yet basic standards regarding the food children are being served do not always seem to be met. There are also concerns surrounding lunchroom practices. An aide, Tessa, has been observed rushing children out of the lunchroom before their allotted lunch time is over. The impression given is that this is being done so the lunch staff can be sent home earlier and the school can avoid paying additional hours. If that is in fact the reason, it is extremely concerning. Children should not have their time to eat shortened because of staffing costs or budget decisions. We chose this school because we trusted that our children would be safe, properly supervised, respected, and cared for. Unfortunately, our experience has left us questioning AGAIN whether those priorities are truly being upheld. There are some good people who care about the children, but the ongoing administrative and operational issues are too significant to ignore.

I can't say enough good things about this school! They have the best teachers and staff and I have…read morenoticed the quality of learning the children receive while enrolled in this school. We were greatly blessed moving into a neighborhood close to this school and by the grace of God our children got in at the right time. Before each school year starts, each teacher reaches out to the parents and makes house calls - a visit to the child's home to meet the parents in person, give them the curriculum, expectations, and guidelines the children are supposed to have so the parents and children know the teacher's expectation throughout the school year. The teachers also give parents their contact info so the parents can easily connect with the teacher at anytime. I mean, what school can you say, that teachers come to your house and makes a personal visit to connect with the family directly? I do not know of any except this school. In addition, this school only has one class per grade - one class of kinder, one class of first grade, etc. The ratio of teacher to children is around 20 to 1. They keep the size of class small so they can keep the class intimate. They also have a therapist on staff for students' mental and emotional health! They keep the students actively reading all year long by having "battle of the books" per grade and have awesome incentives. Julie, the principal, is a "go-getter" and treats all of her students like they are her own. You can feel the love of JHCS staff for each student, and each student is known by their name. It truly is a second family. Besides all of the great things I already mentioned, JHCS is ranked #1 Best Public Elementary Schools in the area and has a grade of "A" in overall niche grade!

My girls LOVE the teachers there and I personally love the staff. They are very selective in who they hire, which alone says alot. Angie, Ashley, & Amanda always update me on anything that goes on while my girls are in their care. They are Ginuwine, honest and caring and it shows. I go by people's vibes and I can tell if someone is Ginuwine or not. These women are very Ginuwine and honest. If an incident occurred with your child, they let you know exactly what happened, how it happened, What time it happened and what they did to comfort your child. The staff is very well trained and definitely hand picked. The owner and managers all have kids and they all go there which is a really good sign. The staff have been there for years, they have well balanced meals, excellent learning activities, and well put together daily schedules.
