My sister and I were on the hunt for some good burgers--something different from the usual BK or McDees--when we came across Thunder Road Grill. Even though it sits right off I-80 in Grand Island, NE, the race-car theme inside gives it a fun, lively vibe, and the place itself was spotless, well-maintained, and very organized. We were promptly greeted by Ms. Heather, the hostess, who was polite, cheerful, and welcomed us with a sweet smile before leading us to a booth in Ms. Hailey's section. Ms. Hailey was bubbly, friendly, and incredibly efficient--no movement wasted. She took our drink and food orders and even repeated everything back to make sure it was perfect. My sister ordered the All-American Cheeseburger with bacon on a buttered, grilled brioche bun with lettuce, red onion, tomato, and dill pickles, plus a side of seasoned fries ($14.50). The fries were crispy, well-seasoned, and very tasty. I went with the Farmhouse Burger topped with melted American cheese and a fried egg ($18.00). The flavors were spot on and the egg was cooked perfectly, though the beef patty was just a bit dry. We also shared the Wings Snack ($8.50) and an order of Onion Rings ($5.50). The wings were cooked perfectly and full of flavor, though they were a little heavy on the BBQ sauce. The onion rings, however, were outstanding--super crispy, well-seasoned, and honestly the best onion rings I've ever had. Overall, this restaurant was a great experience. The staff was friendly, helpful, and very professional. If I ever find myself back in Nebraska, I will definitely be stopping here again. read more

The food here is absolutely KILLER. those chefs in the back freakin whip it up like crazy. The vibe is awesome, there's a little auto museum inside with cool muscle cars and stuff. Lots of truck parking and a great truck stop too. The only complaint I have is the service. I've been many times, and I'd say about half the time it's really good. And half the time is not so great. The last time I went here, the server was amazing, no complaints at all. If I recall right her name was Melanie. The time before that, I sat at the bar and the bartender was just chit chatting and on her phone for a solid 5 minutes before she even looked at me. It wasn't busy. I know it's not super hard to break a conversation to go get a patron a drink at the bar, when you're the bartender. The last visit my server was great, but I saw the bartender do the exact same thing to another guy. He sat there for a while just awkwardly waiting on the bartender who was literally 3 feet away having a conversation about nothing with another person. We travel through Grand Island every year coming and going to CO. We have struggled to find a decent sit down restaurant after a long 9 hr drive. We have looked past this place many times, whether it was the theme or truck stop but we are sure glad we finally gave it a go. The theme is fun and yes it is attached to a truck stop, but the service was great and the food was good. I had the Cobb salad, lots of toppings including crispy bacon - I had the parmesan ranch. My husband ordered the club sandwich with fries. He was very happy with his order. I would've taken pictures but we were hungry after our long day. I hate to say we had low expectations for this place but I'm super happy to say that we'll be coming back each time we stay in Grand island in the future. read more

Sever was very pleasant and food came out fairly quickly. It was later in the evening so they weren't too busy. Unique Car themed restaurant was a great addition to the ambiance. There's not much off the interstate between Kearney and Omaha. But, now I know about Thunder Road. At first glance, I thought "oh a truck stop restaurant. This won't be the best." I was wrong. I had the Nitro burger. It was a huge patty with a bit of kick. The fries were fresh and crispy. And, oh man, the ranch! Homemade and amazing. The service was also very good. This is a neat little bar and grill. It's located at a truck stop. There are vintage cars mounted on the wall as part of the decor. The service here was good. I ordered one of the build your own pizzas. This is a cheese pizza with one meat topping of your choice and one vegetable topping of your choice. I chose pepperoni and green peppers. The pizza tasted great, but the crust was a little flimsy. I used a fork to finish the toppings that slid off while trying to pick it up. read more

The atmosphere is better than the food. I was expecting the food to be amazing, based on reviews. It was ok. I had fried shrimp with coleslaw and onion rings. Shrimp and onion rings were good but not exceptional. The ranch dressing was delicious. Coleslaw was odd and sour. I wasn't sure if that was how it was supposed to be or if it was bad. One of the biggest disappointments I've had in a long time. I used to love this place, used to come here often especially for their food, everything on the menu was so good. But I hadn't been in a few years, and I am not sure what happened in the interim but it's unrecognizable. And the service was friendly but not really very competent. Plus the place was filthy- as our host sat us, I noticed him noticing the spots of mystery gunk on our table and then setting the menus down to try to hide them instead of cleaning or seating us at one of the many other open tables. The iced tea was cloudy and bad, the potatoes were pale and flavorless, we paid eleven dollars for seven pickle quarters, they no longer carry their house steak sauce, my toast was gummy... I just can hardly believe this is the same place I used to love. Clearly under new and worse management, I guess. I'm kind of heartbroken!
