Loved the location and the atmosphere of quiet country setting. I had a very restful stay. And got lucky to stay there during a snowstorm to enjoy the seeing the place covered by a blanket of fresh snow. My cottage had wonderful rustic yet eco-friendly amenities that kept me comfortable and protected from the elements. Hosts are very responsive and focused on hospitality. Hudson, NY is a ten minute drive away and boasts many great restaurants, shops, with a lot of history parked on a riverfront setting. read more

Echoing other reviewers - there's really no way of rating this perfect little Bed and Breakfast with stars, when it truly feels like coming home. My boyfriend and I spent the weekend here for our anniversary, figured a nice quiet 'country' escape from NYC/Long Island was up our alley. We couldn't have chosen a better place - even despite the rainy/misty/over cast weather. We arrived late on Friday - I called ahead and Mary let me know we're welcome to stroll in at any time. She gave us tips for finding the place so late at night and let us know she left all the lights on in our Eco Cottage so we'd have no trouble finding it. Once we pulled in the driveway, we walked around the main house to find the cottage ready for our arrival - and with fresh cookies to boot! From what Mary has told us, the Eco Cottage is fairly new - I honestly didn't find many images online except for on their blog. But it was the perfect size for two, had a sink, hot plate/tea kettle thing for hot water/coffee, old school radio, blow dryer, fan, AC, heater, and place to hang up and store clothing. The bathroom had an odor free composting toilet and shower (with walls made of chalk boards from a school across the river!). Also handmade soap and eco friendly shampoo and conditioner. Each morning we had a delicious, hearty breakfast prepared with fresh eggs/produce/etc. straight from their farm. On Saturday, Mary asked if we had plans for the day (which honestly due to the weather, all of my initial thoughts went out the window) and then suggested several things in the area we should check out. Ended up going to nearby Chatham for their October Feast and finished the day at the Hudson-Chatham Winery with a wine tasting. For dinner, we went to Wm Farmer and Sons in Hudson, due to their specialty in mixology (highly recommend), however another couple this weekend suggested Local 111, 5 minutes away in Philmont. Sunday morning we went to go see the pig, chickens and cows on property, practically next to the house, and met Mary's two dogs Cree and Mr. Shivers - super friendly, small, adorable. Enjoyed another amazing breakfast, packed up our things, and headed out. For anyone looking for a true, home away from home experience - I highly recommend Thyme in the Country. Mary was a fantastic host, our room was perfect, the whole weekend was peaceful and quaint. Really looking forward to coming back in warmer weather to make use of their pool! Note: there is no refrigerator in the Eco Cottage, we had purchased cheese while in Chatham - asked Mary and she had no problem putting our cheese in the fridge in the main house for us. read more

Staying with Mary is like staying with your favorite aunt. This is a truly special place -- isolated in the country yet ten minutes from the creativity and fun of Hudson; an ecologically conscious farm and property that still feels warm and homey and comfortable; a place where interns learn about sustainable land use but everyone feels like family; a place where there are bins for composting and grey water is reused but there are amenities like air conditioning, clawfoot tubs, and a (!) 24-hour swimming pool. My husband and I came here for a week to unwind and write. It was a dream. Delicious farm-to-table breakfast, day trips, walks in the garden, cute puppies, from-scratch baked snacks at night... and always Mary, friendly and caring but completely respectful of your space. It was an absolute pleasure staying at Thyme in the Country. Mary was incredibly inviting and made us feel right at home. Everything from the homemade snacks and breakfast to the cozy bedrooms and the beautiful farmland made our stay feel so welcomed and filled with activities, yet so peaceful and relaxing. The property has a great salt water pool and outdoor shower, which were really nice surprises coming from a city without either. The free range chickens roaming the farm are quite friendly and entertaining, and there is even an Alpaca farm across the road, which I highly recommend checking out to anyone staying at Mary's B&B. Our weekend was accompanied by warm breezes and sunny skies, but I cannot wait to return in the coming months when the leaves change color and Mary builds a bonfire in the yard to cozy up and enjoy the crisp Fall air. The downtown street of Hudson is charming, but there is only so much to do before you wish you were feeding Alpacas and relaxing out in the countryside at Thyme in the Country. Where to begin in my adulation of this B&B... Well, first of all, the owners, Mary and Bill, were some of the loveliest people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting and talking with. They really made our time there a special experience and entertained us as if we were family. Also, Mary made some great suggestions for how we could spend our time in and around Columbia County. The house itself is such a treasure. Filled with wonderful antiques, great pieces of furniture, eclectic serviceware and comfortable places to sit and relax if you choose. (Our favorite spot was by the fireplace, which they kept going whenever it was chilly.) The rooms were so clean and well kept and comfortable and welcoming. I slept better in our bed there than I have in any other bed in a long time, including my own. We had a clawfoot bathtub which I took advantage of a couple of times. What a perfect way to relax after a day of gallivanting around to different sites. Everything that came out of Mary and Bill's kitchen was delicious. I cannot say enough good things about the quality of the food and preparation. When we arrived, there was a fresh pear and plum upside-down cake laid out for us to snack on, the next day a plum tart. The first morning we had a peach crisp with yogurt, then vegetable polenta, cheddar and poached eggs, and freshly baked apple challah bread. The second day, strawberry smoothies, raisin nut sourdough toast baked with cheese and tomatoes (I am definitely going to try this at home! It was incredible), gluten free waffles with whipped yogurt, apple sauce and syrup, eggs made-to-order, and locally made beef sausage. They really know how to please a crowd. And speaking of a crowd, our fellow visitors were such a great bunch of people. I loved them all! We had some really wonderful breakfast conversations and were all hard-pressed to say goodbye when it was time to leave. There are so many other things to say about this place, I could write a novel, but I'll just close by saying, if you are thinking of visiting Columbia County, I wouldn't hesitate a moment to book your stay here if you can. How do you rate with mere stars the feeling of coming "home" to a still warm chocolate cake, and a cold glass of raw milk from the cows not 10 feet away? This place is a gem. It was a lovely drive from the city, in a perfect place across from an Alpaca farm. That's right. A farm with cute fluffy Alpacas is just across the road. Star #6 if possible! Mary was a dream. Kind, patient, hospitable, interesting, cool, etc etc. She would friggin turn over our beds at night and draw the shades so we had comfy comforters and a dark room to sleep better with. Hello...Amazing! Breakfast was to die for. Fresh eggs from her farm and fresh bacon from her (sniffle) pigs! Awesome. Even the other guest were super cool. Perfect location. Perfect place. Just got back from an idyllic trip at Thyme in the Country in Hudson, NY. I chose this B&B as a fun getaway for my sister and me. Mary was lovely, warm, accommodating, and communicative from the very beginning. In spite of being unable to greet us at the door, she made sure that we knew how to get into the home and find our room. We were welcomed by a beautiful basket of fresh apples, and donuts with tea on the kitchen counter. I couldn't think of a more warm, cozy start to our trip. Mary knows what she is doing! The rooms are clean and quaint. There are two living rooms, one of which is filled with books and a wood-burning fireplace (which we so exquisitely made use of on our second night, with the accompaniment of hot cinnamon tea and freshly baked chocolate cake). We definitely felt the charm of the country life during our stay, which was a perfect break from the business of NYC. There are beautiful farms and orchards all along the drive to Thyme in the Country, making it a beautiful drive up to the B&B, as well as the perfect spot for daytime adventures and hikes. Thyme in the Country is also located right off of the main street, making it an excellent rest point when trying to get to/from Rhinebeck, Kinderhook, Hudson, etc. On top of all of this, Mary is just a lovely human being. She is so warm and pleasant to be around. She has really enriched her B&B with her aura, and you really feel it from the second you walk in. Our family (two adults and a toddler) booked a one night stay at Thyme in the Country via Priceline.com and selected a $110/night Queens Cottage option. The room description on Priceline.com and Booking.com promised a room with "en-suite bathroom". Room amenity section also includes "shower or bath", plus "a private outdoor shower", which sounds like a nice option to have. Upon arrival, we were surprised to find that the "en-suite bathroom" is really just a composting toilet. In order to wash hands one needs to get outside. And the "outdoor shower" is the ONLY way to get a shower, which is also about 30 yards away (attached to the main house). There was no way we could wash the toddler there. In addition, the room smells badly. We pointed out to the owner Mary about the misleading information. She was quick to blame Priceline for having the inaccurate description (wonder who wrote these words). Given she has other rooms in the main house (but are $55-$70 more expensive), we asked if she could help us out but giving a $20 discount to stay there. Her response was "I don't see why I should." (Great customer service!) As she pulled out her own cell phone to read w/ us the description about the outdoors shower on Bookings.com, she murmured "I don't know what that means..." As a result, we started looking for other B&B in the area. In the meantime, we made sure to asked and she specifically promised to give us a full refund ("I'll give your money back"), which made our decision easy. . Soon after we left the place, we were told by Priceline that Mary turned around and insisted on charging us $25 cancellation fee. As we called her trying to clarify the misunderstanding, she rudely refused and claimed the $25 charge was there all along (she never mentioned a word of it when we were there for at least 30 minutes that day) We found her attitude throughout the entire process dishonest and unwelcoming. We travel around the country and have stayed in many B&Bs, this is far and beyond the worst B&B experience we've ever had from the beginning to the end! Five-star + review for Mary and Bill's Thyme in The Country. It was the perfect country getaway for these two city dwellers. The property is lovely and the farm-to-table food is impeccable. We appreciated Mary's thoughtfulness, warmth and attention to every detail and were so impressed with the fresh savory offerings that we bought an assortment of heirloom tomatoes, kale, swiss chard and beets from Mary, before leaving. We made the most delicious meal with these fresh offerings when we returned home which extended our "thyme" there. We highly recommend this lovely B&B and will most definitely be going back! If you are looking for a serene picturesque get away, especially if you are coming from the city, this is the place to be! In just pulling up to Thyme in the Country upon arrival, my partner and I realized we were in for a special get away. Mary and Bill are such welcoming and caring people. Mary provides everything you need, from good conversation around the breakfast table, to information about what to do and where to go, and of course, in the service of the home and rooms. The rooms are perfectly decorated, providing all of the amenities one would want or need without all of the usual clutter that accompanies such amenities in most B&Bs. The food is great! We ate local peaches, apples, incredible tomatoes from their garden, and that is just what they have laying around throughout the day for us! Breakfast was milk from their cows, fluffy pancakes with maple syrup, yogurt parfaits that they cultured and strained themselves, french press coffee - I mean to say, that if you are used to the meager meals of other places, this place will blow you away with the simplicity and freshness that is hard to find anywhere. My partner and I felt more the welcomed and provided for during our stay, and if I get another opportunity to come back, I would do so in a heart beat! read more

Thyme in the Country enjoys an ideal setting among perennial beds, and organic gardens. A few belted Dutch cattle graze nearby and provide the farms' fresh milk. It is set in acres of rolling farmland, quiet, beautiful, and serene There is a beautiful willow-shaded pond out back. Breakfast is superb, minted tea, great coffee, fresh muesli, toast, a vegetable strudel with a farm fresh egg on top on one lovely morning. A great enclosed porch shaded by a giant maple tree is an option for summer breakfast. There is an inviting pool and a surrounding deck where you'll want to while away the entire day. The rooms are spacious and very clean, the mattresses and linens first rate. The owners are constantly upgrading the rooms. Ours had a new private bath since our last visit. It all amounts to the nicest bed and breakfast experiences I've had. I'm going back as often as I'm in Columbia County. I think that if you try it, you will too.. I really don't know about other B&Bs in this area because we keep coming back here! It has never been less than an absolutely wonderful time. The food, local and also from the farm itself, is mouthwatering, and presented in a lovely, true chef style. Mary's home made yogurt is unbelievable. Sitting by the fire in the evening with a book is so relaxing, as is going outside and watching the stars. Mary and Bill are great hosts and if you want can help you figure out the best way to make some day trips if you want to go hiking or food exploring or herb foraging. This is a very special place. Over the years I've stayed at countless Bed and Breakfasts all over the world, and most have been at least ok, but few have been great. This one is great, and here's why: the people who run this place sincerely want to make their guests happy and comfortable. These folks have integrity, and it shows up in every aspect of the experience. The B and B is in a charming country farmhouse made cozy and colorful with carefully selected antiques. The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful with lush flowers and veggie gardens and a very refreshing pool. Breakfast was outstanding, made with organic, local ingredients and prepared with real care. By the time breakfast was over, my daughter and I felt like we were part of a wonderful family. Usually I shy away fron this kind of socializing, but Bill and Mary and their delightful son Teddy and their "charmant:' intern visiting from Bordeaux were so warm and interesting that our breakast conversation ended up being one of the highlights of our Hudson Valley vacation. The B and B is nicely situated - it feels very rural, yet it is just a short ride into the lovely little town of Hudson, Rates are extremely reasonable - further evidence that these innkeepers are more interested in providing a wonderful lodging experience than making big profits. My husband and I just got back from a lovely wedding in Hudson and stayed in this wonderful place. It was the first time for us to stay in a "sort of alternative" inn and were concerned we might not feel comfortable. But that concern went away the moment we stepped off the car and immersed ourselves in the nature that being in this place involves. Living in Manhattan, the first thing I felt like doing was walking barefoot at all times. We stayed in a cabin with an eco-friendly toilet, one of those that don't require flushing. I had only tried that system in Asia in places with a hole instead of a toilet bowl, emitting not so good smells. But this system totally surprised us in a positive way as it provided even more comfort than a regular wc. The decoration is cozy and rustic. It is not a fancy place but a very convenient, with a small refrigerator, two fans (no aacc is part of the environmental-friendliness), a tv (which we didn't use) and plenty of fresh towels and a bath robe. In the porch there is a spacey double sink area with a mirror. The shower is located outdoors, a few steps away and overlooks the farm. I found shower a pleasant experience. They have two lovely small dogs, one affectionate cat, three cows, pigs, chickens and a pretty vegetable garden. The owners are very welcoming and prepare an organic home-cooked breakfast every morning. We got yogurt, granola, raw cow's milk, tasty home fries, sautéd kale, eggs, waffles and fruit. There were some meat options for those who desired them. I highly recommend it if you are in the mood for some country style, rustic experience. Probably not for everyone, but I'll definitely stay there again if I go back to Hudson. read more

My family and I stayed here while attending a family wedding in June. Mary and Bill were completely gracious and lovely. Bill was nice enough to wait up a little late for us so we could check in despite that we arrived later than we said. Upon entering our rooms, we were pleased to see that they were, clean, cute, and comfortable. In the morning we were greeted by his wife mary who served some absolutely delicious breakfast made from local produce (including some from her garden). My favorite part about the experience was the charm of being on an active farm. It's clear from the location and how mary and bill speak about their home that they care deeply about responsible and eco friendly farming and taking good care of their animals. Mary encouraged us to go check out the animals, pick eggs, and take a look at her impressive garden - very charming. The second day when my 3 year old niece arrived, Mary made sure my niece had plenty to do, opening up her home and her children's old toys to her. They also have an adorable tree swing, chair swing, hammock, and pool - amenities we only wish we had more time to use.
