I'm extremely disappointed in the way that I have been treated by the front desk. Everything was going fine until my husband lost his job and I was unable to pay my co-pays. I called to make arrangements and was told that I can no longer have my appointment with my provider if I don't pay the balance in full. I tried to explain my situation and I haven't had any problems until now. So needless to say my appointment was canceled and I can no longer get medication for depression, anxiety, etc. I understand that they have a job to do and they need to collect the money. They have lost their compassion annd empathy for people who are going through troubles during this difficult time in our economy. I asked the person answering the phone to please check with the office manager and get back with me to let me know if she's willing to make any arrangements. I never got a phone call. I called back again tried to make more arrangements was told my appointment was canceled. I asked again if they could please speak with the manager give me a call back to see if there is anything we can do to work this out! No return call! I called and asked if they could get a message to the doctor because coming off of this medicine can be dangerous. I was told I'd get a return call back. Once again, no call back. It is not OK to treat people this way. I have no access to getting my prescriptions. I'm surprised there's not a law against this. I normally don't write bad reviews, but they left me no choice. The office manager is the one who runs the front desk! if I had the money I would have paid them. I am not one who skipped out on paying my bills. I know how important these appointments are. I've been being seen here for well over a year or two. I've personally experienced great care and professionalism. Jollie, my med mgmt always has patience and willing to answer all my questions honestly. She is always prompt with being on time and we end our appointments satisfied. Unlike other places in the past, I am completely comfortable with her. The woman I called who answered, Mandy, went above and beyond to help me when my insurance was being difficult. She returned my calls fast. She was extremely willing and made me feel like she was actually concerned. Wow. Hard to find out there these days when it comes to all the Drs I've been having to see. A truly dedicated group here. I feel blessed and lucky to have found such a great practice. Paul my therapist was pretty awesome as well. Honest, thorough, punctual. Went here for almost 3 years and did their IOP program initially, first of all, Hannah the head of the IOP program is amazing but they run her ragged there and do not appreciate her at all, the other providers/doctors in the office are super arrogant and power trip. They are not in the least bit interested in learning anything from their patients themselves, and they all look down upon their IOP patients like they are beneath them and they don't know anything and what they have to say doesn't matter. I asked to come back to the office 2 years later JUST for the IOP program because that, the front desk staff, and Hannah are the only good things there and I was not allowed to unless I also did my medication management as well back over to the office which I refused. I have seen a couple of patients have just IOP there before but I guess since I have disagreed with Dr. N before it's blown up in my face because once you do you always pay for it and that's why I left there.. For a year and a half myself and other patients voiced our issues and frustration with their adderall switch from the immediate release to xr. They took patients that were on 60mg IR Adderall and gave them 30mg XR Adderall all of a sudden because Dr. C found out one of his patients were selling his IR Adderall so he chose to punish the practice. Dr. N was DEMANDING me to do a whole hell of alot of treatment that I found unnecessary in the midst of my custody battle problem was the adderall change and as soon as I got back on my regular adderall again it was fixed. They are not open minded. Only care about ego and $$$. Dr. N definitely gets some kind of kickback from being head of the Partial program at VB psych because he is always demanding people go there and do that stupid program, when it's 9-3 m-f for 2 weeks. Like people don't work and if you don't he is gonna discharge you. No thanks guys I'm good and happy where I am at. Sorry Hannah I hope you leave there before they run you into the ground. My insurance company already paid for and delivered my vivitrol to them and I am not able to get it over a $60 copay that I was never made aware of when I've already been twice before so now my recovery is on the line over $60 with no other options or suggestions! I have received great compassionate service from both the doctor and therapist. Since the pandemic I have received my care via teleheatlh which has actually been very convenient. My doctor is very supportive and thorough. She always makes sure that I have enough meds and makes changes when or if necessary to match any changes to my symptoms. I am surprised at the number of negative comments as I have no reservations in recommending this facility for anyone in need of psychiatric care. I suffer from both anxiety and depression and have gotten a lot better thanks to their care. I believe it's important that you are matched with the right caregiver. For those who are dissatisfied with their care, I suggest that they try a different doctor and/or therapist at. I heir practice. Perhaps they are not paired with the right person. Symptom relief is not an overnight fix so it may take some time before your symptoms become manageable. read more

Dr Cunningham-I read about a reprimand by the medical board that actually speaks volumes. This man was dishonest in his dealings today with me. He stated  Lexapro doesn't cause memory loss and he's never heard of that before in his life. I still urged him to discontinue that in my chart because I fear memory loss. He stated my insurance would only cover 15 minute appointments with him, and that it was a fact. When my insurance has covered 45 minutes in the past for the same issue and type of visit.  Would not let me ask the front desk to confirm about my insurance specifics after our cordial, professional visit..instead, he followed me to the front mentioning I could make another appointment in 2 weeks, but when I asked the front desk about what he said about my insurance, he stayed right behind me and asked me to "leave." Leave the facility. I was not argumentative, but calm and cordial with the front desk..he did not want me to question him or alert anyone else that he had told me incorrect information, a lie. I do not trust this man. This man stood behind me in an intimidating manner after speaking with me in a professional but useless way for approximately 15 minutes during my new patient appointment with him. My rights were violated when he asked that I leave. He stated the front desk can only "check me in." He exercised the right of a coward who did not want someone else to hear the lies he told me. I left, and made a complaint with the Office of Human Rights. This man thought he could tell me anything and I'd take it at face value. But when I spoke up and inquired with the front desk who actually handles insurance verification and billing in the most respectful way..he violated my right to say what I prefer, to get help with my rights even, to ask questions and be told about my rights, and to be treated with dignity and respect. He lied to me and said they do not fill out FMLA paperwork there, only to be informed by me that one of his peers, another psychiatrist, had already started filling the majority of mine out last week when I initially came to be a new patient..before I switched to him a week later. This woman stated she had to "shred it" because I moved over to Mr. Cunningham. He lied and his initial words out of his mouth were that they do not fill out FMLA paperwork. Only for schizophrenics were his words. And he is considered to be the Medical Board Director. More like a weirdo. If he could have put his hand over my mouth and got away with it, I believe that is what he would have done today. When another woman walked out and asked, "Are you okay?" I said "No, I'm not," ready to alert someone about the treatment I was receiving, but while standing behind me, he motioned for that woman to go back in her office. I had an phone ppointment for 08:00 AM. After waiting 30 minutes I called the office and Ashley told me she would text the provider. It's been 1 hour and 20 minutes I have returned to call the office and Ashley the appointment receptionist refuse to transfer to the manager. Said that all that she can do is send messages. It's not like they are tide the office or receiving patients. It's all virtual and they can't keep an appointment or reschedule in time manner. I wish I could give a separate rating for the staff and the doctors here. The treatment, the doctors, are fantastic. Caring, great "bedside manner," they listen wonderfully. I only have one small issue with Dr. Morse, and that's his running late 99.9% of the time, early or late, doesn't matter what day. The front-office staff, management (I use the term VERY loosely,) revenue management, records, and anyone besides the clinicians should all go get some intensive training on how to do their basic jobs. They are not only rude, but unprofessional and I've witnessed the front desk staff degrade and downright insult the patients who pay their salaries and need the clinical services most. If not for the clinical staff, my first visit there would have certainly been my last. read more

Dr. Morse was my psychiatrist for the past 5 years. He's a great guy! He transferred his business from Norfolk to here so of course I followed. I use the past tense since I have been banned from Tidewater psychotherapy services now because I missed 2 appointments! I think that's a little harsh in my opinion. On top of getting a late fee billed to your house you are also banned from coming back and they cancel all your future appointments. I still haven't been able to find another place with the same level of customer service as this one. I mean they send you a letter with suggestions and everything, and I've called all of them, but none of them have ever called back and I haven't been able to reach a live person in months for these places. I don't feel like this is a good rule to have, I was just beginning treatment for ADHD and then this happens. Like thanks, I really needed that. Dr. Stephen G. Cunningham is a criminally negligent medical practitioner who is extremely dangerous to the mentally endangered community in Virginia. I requested Latuda for management of Bipolar II depression for at least ten years. He consistently refused. I was very unstable for a ridiculously lengthy period of life that should have been the best ones. Because of his cruel and unusual care, I was involuntarily committed to Tidewater Psychiatric Hospital many many many times. That place is hell on earth. I was stuck there A LOT. For VERY lengthy sentences because of his criminally negligent fetish. I was consistently assigned to him at Tidewater Psychiatric Hospital and couldn't escape his sick game. I begged for another doctor there and found one I really loved who made things better, but Dr. Light consistently REFUSED for zero logical reason that was ever explained to me. He forced me to do jumping jacks in front of him in his office at Tidewater Psychotherapy Services when it was very obvious I was not wearing a bra and I have 40DD bra. He was officially reprimanded by the Virginia Medical Board for mishandling a Hepatitis C diagnosis to an unfortunate patient and he threw his nurse practitioner under the bus and he is still practicing psychiatry because (SPOILER ALERT) he sits on the Virginia Medical Board! I was able to break free from this morally corrupt "doctor" in November 2023. My new doctor at Panacea immediately gave me Latuda when I said I needed it. My whole life has exponentially improved. I finished my Bachelor's degree at The University of Virginia and am very happy and motivated to explore my future for the very first time. Something is extremely wrong inside his brain yet he controls the mentally endangered citizens of our community. This must stop. read more

We were assessed a missed appointment fee after they changed my phone number in error and I did not get the reminder call. Then refuse to see my daughter for her Med appointment or refill her prescription until I pay it. I had the regular copay just not the extra $50. Never told me we could not be seen unless I paid it when I made the appointment. No payment options and the woman at the counter was rude and would not get a manager for me to speak with. Now she has no meds. Great job Tidewater. Way to show compassion for your patients! To update: I called and spoke to the billing office and the lack of caring and empathy in the voice of the woman I spoke with was incredible. Clearly all about the money from the top down. Not even for actual services rendered, which I could understand a little more. I am a manager at a medical practice so I understand the importance of the providers time, but we work with our patients to make sure they get the care they need. I should caveat this review with I really do like my provider. What I dislike is that if you should make a mistake, it's expensive. $100 for a missed appointment, which is USURIOUS to say the least. Let me say that again: ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS if for some reason your forget or otherwise miss an appointment. They called me to reschedule an appointment I had made with one of their therapists. That's fine, but they called me in the midst of a busy workday. It didn't get on my calendar. My bad. Fine. It was a mistake. We all make them, right? But where's that courtesy reminder call? Did I receive one? Nope. Because I was seeing a different therapist, they're calling me a new patient. Doesn't that at least warrant a call a day or two before? They dropped that ball. I have no messages to remind me of this appointment which they had to reschedule due to a conflict on the provider's schedule. Had they done so, I would have either been there for the appointment or I would have called them to reschedule, if there was a conflict. While I have nothing but good things to say about my actual provider, their office practices leave a lot to be desired and $100 is enough to make someone on a low income miss a rent payment, not eat, not be able to pay the light bill. That's not fair. I will likely be asking for a referral to a new provider at my June 3rd appointment and I will most definitely also be calling my insurance provider to let them know of this office's shady business practices. If my hair stylist can manage a reminder call, an office charging $100 for a missed appointment should be able to manage it, too. read more

This place really needs to get it self together, it is not my fault that Dr. Morse prescribed me too large of a amount of Xanax for too long YEARS AGO . Everyone is so nice that works there but my phsyciatrist Dr. Cunningham is horrible. He doesn't care about his patients and their needs. I told him about problems I was having and he upped medication that had absolutely nothing with what I was having problems with and significantly lowered one that was helping me. He's rude and won't listen to what you have to say. His Nurse practitinier, Ed Evard is better at his job than he is. and I'm sure everyone who goes to hun thinks the same thing because Ed's books are always full and Cunningham always has spots available. If I could stay just for his NP I would but I can't have him messing with my medications like that. I'm not a science projec. The front desk receptionist: Very rude, condescending, borderline verbally abusive, and any task that's expected of them seems to be an ordeal. They simply don't want to be there! Phone calls are very difficult to get through and the reminder appointments are often not implemented. Any request to the front desk is always answered in a very aggressive verbal abusive fashion. One of them in particular (can't remember her name) actually yelled and screamed at me on the phone when I needed to reschedule. The billing staff love to bill clients inappropriately by concocting lies of no shows. The Doctor epitomizes psychiatry express at it's finest by seeing you for only a mere few minutes to only then send you off your way with a Rx. He is definitely NOT a people's person! Their appointment setting system is a joke. When you call, you talk to a front desk receptionist that then relays the call to another person that 's suppose to set appointments to only end up having to leave a message on their answering machine every time! A very convoluted long drawn process! They obviously are constantly grasping for straws to squeeze money from patients at their integrity's expense! This 'Service' has been relocated 3 times in the last two years which makes me suspect that there's more than what meets the eye! If you want to verbally abused, yelled at, lied to, get treated like a sub-human, and billed unfairly, TIDEWATER PSYCHOTHERAPY SERVICES is for you. I love my doctors here but the clerical staff is the absolute worst. even when we're not going through a pandemic it takes 3 or 4 days to get them to answer the phone at best. I missed one call last week to schedule my appointment and I've called every day multiple times a day since to no avail. Have left voicemails too (on non appointment lines, they don't have voicemails for appointments)...they don't have a way to contact them other than phone. I'm hunting for a new doctor but it sucks because I was able to get in so quickly and my dr here prescribes me exactly what I need. Basically, don't be fooled if they get you an early appointment. You won't be able to talk to someone unless you select the incorrect menu option and then they're just annoyed that you did that. read more

When I read the reviews for this office after I made my first appointment I was REALLY nervous because they were so bad. BUT I have a great review for them. The front desk is pretty crappy but it depends on who is up there. There is one lady who is awesome (I didn't catch her name) but she was friendly especially for 8am. The reason I still go is because my doctor is awesome. Dr. Romero is very quick, thorough and ready to help when you really need it. I usually have an 8am appointment and I am out by 815! He's quick and to the point and as a busy mom I appreciate that. If you want someone to talk it up you might want to get a therapist as well because he really is for the prescribing not really for talking things out. Overall the reviews don't do this place justice so I say you should try it out and see for yourself! read more

I have been a patient there on and off for many years. I recently had an inpatient visit at Sheppard Pratt Hospital. When I was discharged on July 7, the staff there faxed a request for Dr. Cunningham to complete for my outpatient ECT treatment. To date he has not returned the paperwork. Sheppard Pratt contacted his office on numerous occasions. I have contacted his office on numerous occasions. As a result my ECT treatments have been suspended. I recently, like 9/1/22, I was not allowed to speak to Dr Cunningham and was told that I needed an appointment to speak with him. I have been told on numerous occasions that all they could do was send him a message. What the hell. It has been almost two months, how unprofessional, how uncaring and irresponsible can a doctor be. I need these ECT treatments to prevent further issues with my mental health. Don't count on assistance from this practice! read more

I was very hesitant to make an appointment at Tidewater Psychotherapy Services because of all the negative reviews, but I gave it a try. I was so very pleasantly surprised. I was able to get an appointment fairly soon with Dr. Romero, and he was very professional, thorough, and understanding. I would not hesitate to refer a friend to him. I am very pleased with the treatment I received. As far as the staff goes, I thought they were friendly and efficient, but maybe a little understaffed. If you are having any anxiety issues, this is the last place you will find any type of relief. Not only is the staff the most unprofessional I have ever encountered, but the building sounds like it will collapse at any moment. After verifying my insurance and obtaining authorization, they still billed me for the exam instead of their billing department actually submitting and filing the claim with the insurance company. Someone at their facility is being paid to handle insurance/billing, and I would prefer they do so instead of passing the work along to their patients. When this Dr.'s office messes up on your bill, you have to ask about it for weeks, and they still won't help you. When you ask to speak with the owner, they say they are out of the country. when you ask to speak with a Dr., they say they don't take complaints, when you ask to speak to who is in charge, they say they are not here, when you call in for an emergency, press 1 for 911, 2 to speak with a Dr., no one calls you back, when they over charge you, they never resolve the problem. 1 STAR is too high of a rating, everyone in the waiting room seems upset, I highly suggest you look elsewhere for help. read more

I really like the girls at the front desk and on the phone. It is tricky to get through on the phone but they are efficient at answering voicemails in a day or so. They've always been helpful and sweet to me, but I have been in psychiatric care for ten years. I have never had, "an office staff" before. I have had to play phone tag with my prior practictioners who "did it all" themselves in the evening after working with patients all day.I have been with Tidewater Psychotherapy for nearly 2 years and see both a trauma counselor and a psychiatrist. I have clicked with my counselor since day 1. She listens and remembers and asks questions of concern. My psychiatrist has also been easy to work with and has been extremely flexible with med changes due to a seizure diagnosis. He's leaving the practice as of April 30 and I am left starting over again. It's tough finding psychiatrists accepting new patients during COVID and so far I haven't. A day of calling other practices reminds me how aggressive some receptionists can be towards psych patients. Thank goodness I am not in the middle of a crisis. I have decided to stop hunting and see a different provider at Tidewater Psychotherapy where I was am quite content. read more

For a mental health facility, I was extremely disappointed in the treatment of their clients. The scheduling receptionist, Kayla, is untrained and incredibly rude. After not being able to solve our issue, she decided to discharge my son. When I asked to speak to a doctor, she refused. I then told her I would come up there and speak with a doctor face-to-face. That is when she advised me that she decided to discharge my son immediately and if we cam to the office, she would call the police. I was FLOORED!!!! I could not believe the lack of professionalism and the fact that receptionists have more say in my sons treatment than the doctor. On top of that, when I called back again, she stated that she didn't like my attitude, that I called her names and was yelling. Again, I began to wonder if I was in the Twilight Zone or if she had me confused with someone else... or maybe they have so many clients that they simply do not care. I also called their patient liaison line and my call was never returned. I would not recommend this place unless you enjoy being stepped on, disrespected and have no plans of recovering anytime soon. They continue to talk to my insurance and get told to rebill them for payment. They are not even supposed to be sending me bills by law. The funny thing is, they send me bills, but I can never get a call back from anyone. The administrative staff, especially in billing and insurance claims, are beyond difficult to work with. Thank god I moved out of state. I am dealing with claims from TWO YEARS AGO. They also show me over 120 days late for payment, and I will fight anything that shows up for them on my credit report. For an organization that is supposed to help people, aside from the practitioner I went to that was actually kind (the other could care less about me), this place is absurd. read more
