We were strolling around after dinner last week when we happened upon Tierra Huichol. As soon as you walk in, BOOM! EYE CANDY everywhere. It's so vibrant, colorful and beautiful. The entire staff was friendly and helpful. I had required about Dia de Los Muertos dolls and she showed me these fun little diorama boxes. When I asked about the "Skeleton dolls" she educated me on the Caterinas. I didn't realize they were called something else. I have been wanting one for YEARS but never found the right one when we visited PV. After narrowing down my choice by size (there were dozens!) I had them down to three. Then we all looked at them, dissected them by their meanings, checked the beadwork front at back (they are all unique) and finally picked one. I also got a Huichol duck for a gift and the Dia de Los Muertos for my husband as a surprise in a few months for this birthday. They explained they carefully handpick/ wrap the art for travel and to return tomorrow. The Caterina doll was wrapped perfectly and carefully along with a handle for easy transport. She fit easily in our overhead bin on the plane. I couldn't be happier with my selection, the shop's terrific and friendly staff and all the inventory. Muchas gracias!

I have been coming to this company for years. On my first trip I purchased an incredible yarn painting. I have developed a large collection of beaded figures. The prices are not "cheap" but a great value for the level of artistry. I would recommend you inspect your pieces. If a bead is wrong, say something. They have someone who can fix it. The time to complain is not when your home. Staff is not pushy. They have respect for the art!

Authentic Huichol art pieces made by native Huichol peoples. They have an artist in the store at all times. I wish I could remember the name of the guy who helped us, he was magnificent in explaining the meanings behind each piece we bought. He was very good at packaging all our items and placing a piece of paper with all the meanings behind each piece. I wanted to buy everything! Tip the artists accordingly please!

I never miss shopping at this beautiful store. I bought my first hand beaded collectibles here years ago and as I was leaving I saw the day of the dead dolls. I didn't buy one that day because we didn't have time and thought about these dolls for a year before I got back. I can't explain how beautifully they are made. The dolls are painted in such vivid colors and have lots of tiny details. There are so many to pick from like musicians or nurses or bride and grooms etc. I buy one every year I go. Do yourself a favor and visit this amazing store. You will fall in love.

I love this place. Huichol yarn art, beading and Dia de los Muertos dolls. SO BEAUTIFUL! Alejandro/Alex is proud of his establishment and tells you about the families that it supports, how long each piece takes, the meanings of the symbols. Artisans bead right in front of you. The prices are fair - what would you pay for six months of beading?! You can find small, less expensive pieces to remind you of your Puerto Vallarta vaca, and you can find some, well, art pieces.

This place is amazing not only is the art absolutely stunning but prices are incredible! as well as the fact that you're supporting the artist themselves and their culture! I like to add the customer service for the store is amazing they really care about the customers I will be a lifelong customer both online and in person. Neft helped me from start to finish there was something wrong with my order (accidentally received the wrong item due to website error), and not only did he respond to my email right away he made sure the problem was fixed and I was happy, now THAT'S customer service Neft u need a raise bro, I look forward to going into the store again!!

Each bead is placed by hand using honey.

I have no idea why I feel so passionately about this art. They have two locations. The location on the yelp listing wasn't as personable as the other. I met the shop owner at the: Olas Altas # 246 - 1 Colonia Emiliano Zapata Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. CP 48380 Location. This isn't the type of tourist junk that I feel like most people buy while on vacation. (Don't worry, I still bought cheap Puerto Vallarta shirts on the beach.) This is true art. Prices range from $15-$5,000

Words cannot express how much I adore this small, enchanting gallery/store that borders the Romantic District (across from a public park) and is easy to miss. Amongst all the noise of the disingenuous tourist traps, this place stands as a beacon for anyone disillusioned with the high-pressure kitsch of time-share-sponsored (*groan*) shops and who would like to take home a few mementos or artifacts that are interesting, meaningful and beautiful reminders of their trip to Mexico. A large percentage of money also goes to the tribes who created the artworks so you can feel good about what you're purchasing and where the money is going... And also about the authenticity of the work itself (more on that in a second). Tierra Huichol has an extensive selection of beaded items and yarn paintings (Huichol) that I believe are some of the better ones I've seen in Puerto Vallera (aesthetically), but also better in that I felt the pieces were ethically sourced from Huichol descendants/Shamans -- who are the only ones authorized to make and profit from pieces of this kind, although I'm sure it's intentionally hard to verify sourcing... Especially when you're on the boardwalk *cough* Tierra Huichol's inventory is curated, crafted and in my opinion is created by someone with an advanced graphic eye (a.k.a., where applicable, you can see signs of expert craftsmanship like symmetrical designs with proper placement of the eyes, more intricate patterns, more harmonious colors, etc) but I guess it all depends on which Shaman they're working with at the time or what works cross their path. We spoke a bit with Raul who acts more as a docent than a salesperson and really cares about the history of the work. He will give you extensive information about the ideas within each piece, the person or tribe that authored it, and also the techniques utilized in the creation of it. We thoroughly enjoyed talking with him and appreciated the laid-back, authentic, educational and non-hoity toity atmosphere we got while browsing in his store -- which really was much more a gallery than a store (no cheesy tip buckets sitting out, no tasteless time share pitches, no questions in my mind about the authenticity or ethics of the work). Believe it or not, many other store owners selling similar wares actually tried to sell us more freakin time share presentations which frankly is a huge turn off and makes my wallet clap shut. Raul did not and was just fun and lovely to talk to (and we love him and his very refined store for that). Class all the way! That is why we purchased several gorgeous pieces from him and will definitely be back in the future!

Bead art or huichol art adorned the lobby and rooms at the resort we stayed at and I was on a mission to go home with a few of these beautiful and intricate works of art. We hired a driver to take us to this shop in downtown PV. After walking in, I was immediately engulfed in the beauty and detail of these pieces! We met one of the artists, Edgar Jiménez who was working on a dia de muerto doll. Carlos who walked me through the store and explained the significance of the symbols on each piece I picked up was extremely friendly and accommodating. He told me that most of these pieces take months to finish! It was so easy to get overwhelmed as there were so many pieces on display. I was so glad Carlos was there to help me navigate through the store. I did purchase 8 pieces including one made by Edgar, the artist at the store. Carlos thanked me endlessly, but I was the one who walked out happy!

The statue they sold me was made from heat fired clay. It fell apart when I took it out of its improper wrapping the store boxed it up in.

The statue I purchased from this store fell apart when I brought it home. It was not wrapped properly but even so, their statues are made from heat fired clay, it is brittle and the parts fall apart even with the slightest touch. It is in so many pieces not even worth trying to glue it all back together. I posted a photo of the statue in pieces. Have a look. I contacted this shop several times to try and get a refund and was ignored. Total waste of $100. Don't bother with this shop.

This review is long overdue - I really dislike leaving bad reviews but the situation continues to eat at me so I feel that I need to share my experience about Tierra Huichol. On December 31st, 2015 I entered the store and fell in love, the art seemed amazing and the colors were vibrant. I am an avid collector of Mexican art and had to add one of their pieces to my collection. So, I ended up buying a moose for 13,500 Pesos or approx. $800.00 (invoice # 5194 and 5195). This was no cheap inexpensive piece, I wanted the best! Anyway, they wrapped it up and off I went. I get home (in San Francisco) and get it unwrapped and discover the front left leg had a hazy look to it, upon further investigation I learn it was a poor job of glueing and that the leg was broken and repaired at some point. (see photos). To say the least, I was less then thrilled. I just spent all this money for a piece that has been repaired and is worth absolutely nothing. What a huge disappointment. Here is my issue - The sales person should have been completely honest with me and mentioned the fact that this was a repaired/substandard/junk piece. How can a store be this dishonest and still be in business (maybe because most of the patrons are tourists). I would not have purchased this, not even for a huge discount, I would have chosen another piece. The business practice is poor, very poor. As a business owner myself, this is not how you treat customers - selling a rejected, repaired, worthless piece will not get you any referrals, as a matter of fact it works quite the opposite. I will continue to share my story about Tierra Huichol. The true test will be how the owner responds to this review.

I really fell in love with one of the statues from this store, but was nervous about the trip back to America. What they do is they bubble wrap the base of the statue then place it in a box. The store clerk assured me that their packaging will allow me to travel with it and have no issues. While they were packaging her, I questioned them on not buffer wrapping up the top portion of the statue, but again they assured me that they knew what they were doing and not to worry. So I get home and she is completely destroyed from the waste up, exactly where they stopped bubble wrapping her. Her head has fallen off and her arm is in pieces. So I basically wasted $50. Thanks.

I have yet to get this money back. I have no idea if this was a mistake or a scam, I tried to call and email the shop to no avail and my bank is having no luck either. Wonderful Mexican artwork store located in old town Puerto Vallarta that specializes in the Huichol…read moreartwork. The Huichol artwork originated from ancient Indians that lived in Mexico where the art form is symbol based where each symbol has a meaning. Much of this artwork is done with small glass beads pressed into wax where the level of detail is quite exquisite and clearly very labor intensive which adds to the appreciation of this type of artwork. This particular store has a very large selection of this Huichol pieces of artwork ranging from fairly small simple pieces of art to very large detailed intricate pieces that are absolutely beautiful. These pieces really need to be seen in person to be appreciated as a picture will not do it justice. Aside from the Huichol artwork, this shop also has Alebrijes (mystical animal creations), clay artwork, paper mache artwork, artistic tapestries and traditional Mexican clothing. Really a wide array of beautiful Traditional Mexican artwork. Lastly the staff is extremely friendly and helpful without being pushy. You will enjoy your discussions with them as they tell you about the history of these art forms and about who does them current day and how they are made. Also they are very adept at packaging your purchases so they survive the trip home. Overall a wonderful place to visit even if you are not in the market to buy.
