He will push you in traditional Tae Kwon Do from forms and patterns, to mastering kicks to weapons. And then sparring class. The toughest workout I have ever done. I have played football, baseball, basketball, weight lifted etc. This night leaves me so sweaty and exhausted. An amazing workout. I signed up my son (5 at the time) to learn martial arts. We did our home work and learned from several friends and reviews that this place would be a perfect fit. He has been in it for just over a year and has belted up to his fifth belt (blue). He was never a child who needed help with focus, although if that is needed, martial arts will help. He did have issues with confidence. He is slowly breaking out of his shell. Mr Jimmy is very good with the kids. He is tough when he needs to be, but never mean. "Punishments" are wall kicks or push ups. This forces focus, while building strength. The kids love going and respect him, classes are always fun, and having fun and laughing is a big part of the learning process here. This is not just for kids though. After watching him for almost a year, I signed up. It just looked like so much fun. I have belted up to green as of this review (my 4th belt). I look forward to class every night that I have it. I have belted up faster than children. Perhaps because I "learned" all techniques watching my son. Maybe the early belts are easier for adults. One thing I have learned is never ask for a test. You will be told when you are ready. I will be signing up for Hapkido in the fall. I have nothing but positive things to say about this "dojang" or gym. Mr Jimmy (as he is known by the kids) teaches 95% of the classes himself. He has many black belts that assist so people new to a belt are never thrown into a class with people who know the material. If you want some good exercise, and are bored with the gym (I do both) I highly recommend White Tiger Martial Arts.

In the beginning…read morewe were very supportive and he was excited to attend his martial arts classes each week. Over time, I became a bit confused about how the progression and belt testing worked. From what we experienced, the kids martial arts program appeared to be structured so students learned portions of material each month (for example kicks, defense holds, or parts of their routine) and then tested for a stripe. After several months of learning that material, students then waited another month to test for the next belt. From our perspective, the overall timeline for belt advancement felt longer than we originally expected. Cost was also something we had to consider over time. When we started the monthly tuition for the martial arts training was $135 and later increased to $155. By around the 18-month point we had spent roughly $2,500 in tuition. When my grandson later enrolled at another martial arts school, his belt rank from Thompson's unfortunately was not recognized, so he had to begin again. To be fair, my grandson did enjoy some of the special events like Nerf Night and Glow Night, which were fun for the kids. In the end, for our family we were primarily looking for martial arts instruction, and the pace of belt testing and overall cost just didn't end up being the right fit for us. Parents considering a kids martial arts program may want to ask about the belt testing timeline and long-term tuition costs before enrolling.

Recently, I was in the market for trying something new because Groupon adventures add interest to my life. This was one of them. 1st day of instruction went something like this: We show up, do some basic movements, pair up, practice, and somewhere in between we switch partners and I am paired with a 200lb wrestler. HAH! After getting shaken around a bit, still scared out of my mind and questioning my choices up to that point, I got a great workout, a load of information, and some very useful self-defense moves. Bless these guys for going easy on me because I do not have any sort of muscle definition. I bet if I come here often enough I can one day overtake them because BJJ is more so about skill than it is about strength. The instructor Josh was very patient with us. We came in with no experience and he was able to skillfully show us how to do BJJ even if it took a couple of times. Can't say this type of workout is for everyone since it's a full contact sport but, was very fun and an incredible workout. Would highly recommend this place to anyone, amateur or pro who wants to improve their skill because the skills you learn are definitely useful. Keep in mind this place is not aesthetically pleasing and not the cleanest because people keep sweating profusely but, it's still a great learning experience with awesome people who know their craft so, that's why I gave it 5 stars. Definitely, check out their site for schedules and such because there's more info on there. Give it a chance if you're up for the challenge!

They moved a few weeks ago to a new location in the same "Berkeley Plaza" and have about 5x the space they had before (according to the manager). There is no waiting for anything here. I posted pix and you can see, being in a former grocery store location, there is plenty of room to move around, and loads of equipment. There are several "machines" for each body part. The downside of "machines" is that if you use one, you work out the muscle on a "plane" and it doesn't get "confused" so development can be impaired. With multiple machines from different manufacturers, this problem is solved. I am older (50+) so I really can't push limits with free-weights, so the variety of machines works great for me. They have a full free-weight offering as well. Before, the only thing I noticed they didn't have was fixed weight barbells. Problem solved. They have them now, and dumbbells all over the place. I have been a member of several gyms over the years, and been a guest to several dozen around the country (as a Golds member, reciprocal visits for guests, depending on the franchise owner) when I traveled on my job (retired now). This place definitely is the largest and most completely equipped place I have ever seen. Not to mention, they have Zumba (sp?) and other classes too, plus classes in karate for youngsters. Check it out.

As I write this, I can see a dozen machines missing parts, largely nonfunctional, and clearly not being fixed anytime soon. When the pins were lost or broke, they were replaced with plain metal rods that hardly fit the weight stacks. Forget using the 5 and 10 pound weights too. Adjust by 15 pounds or none. Lastly the service here is terrible. The employees don't care to do their job whatsoever. I've waited 10+ minutes at the front desk just to get them to let me in when I had a guest pass. The desk workers are often walking around talking to friends or working out themself. And in 10,20+ minute increments too. Little care to be available for help. Two stars for being 24 hours. As far as I'm concerned it barely earns that. At the risk of being too rude, it's downright shameful.

Hidy Ochiai Karate stood out above them all! Their classes go beyond the regular karate classes that other martial arts places provide. Here, they also do Kobudo which we learned is the use of ancient weapons! Trust me, your kids will go bonkers for this class!! It's taught in an extremely safe way, but still makes the kids feel like ninja superstars! I kind of want to take it myself :D Our daughter also did the summer camp this past summer and she loved it! She came home with real calligraphy paintings! Another thing that pushes them to the top is that they have Master Hidy Ochiai himself who comes down from New York to do special teachings with the kids each month. Look him up on YouTube and watch him slice an apple on someone's neck .... wait for it .... blindfolded! His skills are incredible and he is incredible with the kids as well. This school is in no competition with any other Martial Arts place because it's THAT good! I want to write a novel on here, lol, but I won't. Just one last thing to note: Sensei Winkler himself is AHmazing with the kids too. The way he talks and interacts with the kids makes them listen and have fun. I've sat and watched him a number of times when my daughter is in class. He's structured and fun, which is exactly what my daughter needs! Sensei Winkler is an incredible teacher because he has a lifetime of experience and many trophies from national Championship tournaments! You have to at the very least come to their free class on Saturdays!
