Throughout the project, he was prompt, communicative, and fair. Sterling and Phil came in and tackled all the quirks of a 100 year old house with experience and humor. When there were additional challenges (previous homeowner had screwed sheetrock over plaster in some places so the walls and ceiling were uneven, counters were not square or level, filled mismatched molding joints with putty) - they took the time to fix the old work and redo it correctly. They worked efficiently, paid attention to detail, and everything turned out beautifully. All three were professional, kind, and respectful throughout. I will definitely call on them in the future.

There are 2 times that I tried to provide concern or feedback on the project and Dan yelled at me in a disrespectful manner, basically he told me to step out of his way and he had the right to do whatever he want because he runs the project. My project is the remodeling of existing shower, replacing shower pan, new tiles, exhaust fan, toilet, adding two lights and outlet, and patches walls as well as paint the path room. I like the result accomplished very much. Ben and Lorena are very patient with my tons of my questions and responded timely. I had come up a lot of detail requests, which got well explained and addressed. The teams came on time for different tasks, the quality of work looks good. Louise was very helpful with me on the site and coordinated all parts of work done properly. Tech line also coordinated with city permit and inspections. We were…read morelooking to replace all the windows (new construction with breaking stucco on outside and lath and plaster on inside, installing windows, closing walls and reinstalling trim), insulate all exterior walls from the inside, replace old knob and tube wiring, replace the roof, and paint inside and out in our 1930 house. Their bid was on the low side compared to the "Palo Alto prices" that I received from some of the other contractors. Some contractors come in with arrogance and cologne and give you imprecise estimates or "maybe if you are lucky we will work with you" attitudes, or get mad when you ask for details on their quotes. Lorena and Ben were friendly and answered my questions with patience, and seemed trustworthy. They didn't have a long history or local references, so I did want to check references, which checked out great. Contracting was easy. We changed a few window sizes so needed architectural signoff for our permit. If there was one weakness it was this process as their designer made some measurement errors that slowed us down - but we did get the drawings done and the permit issued (and they do have other designers they work with). Once the permit was issued and building started, TechLine went to town with A+ performance and attitude. They were very competent, showed up every single day, worked fast, and were respectful and friendly with all questions and unexpected things that came up. I tried to visit the house every day or two to make sure things were as I wanted, and TechLine was fine with this. It helped move the project along and answer any questions quickly as they came up. I am thankful they were gracious about this oversight because I could see some contractors feeling cramped with this approach. For me, it really ensured the project turned out how I wanted it. We added to the project as we went when we saw opportunities, and they were always reasonable in their pricing and fast to execute. The end result is fantastic - the house is airtight, the finishes are just what I wanted, and we're very happy with it. Re: timing, we had to move out and were worried about doing construction during the rainy season, so we wanted it done fast. The whole project was done in 3 months as promised, even though we added to the scope as we went. My neighbors were amazed by how fast it went, and one neighbor subsequently hired them for a project. I did hire a separately licensed electrician to do the rewiring, which I was not so satisfied with, and probably should have had TechLine do the electrical too. Overall, I highly recommend TechLine. Thanks to Lorena, Ben and Jose and team for helping us make our house so much nicer. I would definitely hire them again.

I spoke with six GCs. Most were cheaper -- roughly $20k less for the kitchen, $10k less for the bathroom. At the time, it looked like savings. It wasn't. Craig A. explained the importance of: * Proper wall blocking for cabinets and hood venting * Replacing old copper hot and cold lines while walls were open * Installing flooring correctly wall-to-wall under cabinets * Pulling permits for inspections and proper workmanship Others focused on cost. Permits weren't necessary, they said. Now that the remodel is "finished," the shortcuts are painfully clear: hood vent vibrations, leaking copper lines, uneven cabinets. To fix it, cabinets, drywall, flooring, and some finishes must be removed and replaced, and some items can't even be reused. The fix is now $43,538 -- far more than the $30k I thought I was saving. Craig wasn't trying to sell me extras. He was protecting my investment. If you meet him, you'll see he's genuine, professional, and honest. I was too focused on the upfront price to appreciate the value of his advice. Lesson learned: a remodel can look beautiful on the surface, but what matters most is what's behind the walls. Cutting corners isn't savings -- it's deferred expense. I'm actually kicking myself because I took everyone off Angie's List and considered only the other lower bids. Craig was a referral from a close friend who told me upfront, "They may be a little more expensive, but you'll be happy in the long run." They were right. I hope others can learn from my experience.
