The beauty rooms are at the back of the shop behind a sliding door, which keeps them quite private. The beauty therapists are wonderful and very knowledgeable. The hair salon is always clean and the staff are absolutely fantastic. They are always on hand if you need help/advice or just a simple fringe trim. There is also a nail bar which I have never used but it always looks like a real treat. Prices are not too bad, cheaper than city centre and you really do get what you pay for (and a little bit more from TBW).

I tried to resolve it with the salon and it went nowhere - so it's going to get blasted on Yelp. Such is life on the interwebs! We had two appointments booked simultaneously. I, for a pedicure, waxing and haircut... and my boyfriend to get a (manly version of a) pedicure and haircut. I guess I'll first say that his pedicure was done by someone else and was a positive experience. His haircut was subpar and the woman who did it did not really listen and cut a few too many inches despite us both telling her directly how many inches to cut. Since then he's been pretty unhappy with it. Tsk tsk. Men are pretty touchy about such things. Especially men who walk in with a lot of hair, but he sucked it up regardless.. Now moving on to my appointment.. I was told that my pedicure would be done on a table (weird) and without water (also weird) by a woman named Janice who I later found out was the owner/manager. Since there was no traditional pedicure chair or even a basin presented for soaking, it was painful. She poked me quite a bit throughout the process, and overall it was nowhere near the relaxing pedicure I had so hoped to receive. My boyfriend's feet did get a proper soak from another technician so apparently only Janice prefers to not use water. As a person she was nice enough, she made the usual small talk but it just was not relaxing and that sucked since it was *not* cheap and I had so looked forward to having a nice pedicure. The waxing she did was fine. The haircut I got from a woman I do not remember the name of was fine; it was just a trim. The real problem began when I got home and saw that all that poking on my feet that had stung so much started to hurt more and more... and the big toe in my right foot became infected. I had to treat it (blood, pus and all) for several weeks afterwards and it's actually still a bit of an issue as I type this. I keep my feet really clean and am very careful with where I go for pedicures, so it really frustrates me to have this kind of issue after the expense of it. I wrote to the salon a couple weeks after the appointment and let them know what the situation was and the owner (Janice) wrote back to briefly apologize and then repeatedly assert that she was the owner (good for you..) and to say I should come in for another appointment to look at the toe. I reminded her that 1.) I do not *live* in Edinburgh and 2.) I saw no point in another appointment for an infected toe, even if I did. I mean seriously? There was no response after that. Normally a place of business would offer to refund the service or something along those lines, but no. So I would not go back here, definitely not.

I first started going here to get my hair done a couple of years ago and I am so glad I found the place - you get wonderful service and don't pay through the nose for it. I get my highlights done here and the most you will pay for 3 foil colours is just over £50 and this includes a cut and blow dry. If you just want a cut and blow dry the most you will pay will be £20. The salon has a fresh and modern look and offers perms and tinting too. The staff make a real effort to get to know their customers and listen to what you want rather than just going ahead and suiting themselves. It is also a very down to earth place, which I far prefer to some of the places in town which seem to be superior and cold. If you fancy a new look or are new to town and want a new hairdressers, I highly recommend Vallance Hair.

I've lived in 4 flats since that first visit and have lived in Leith for over a year now but I still make the trip across town for all my haircuts because it really is such good value compared to everywhere else I have seen in Edinburgh and it's the only place I don't feel nervous as soon as I sit in the chair.

Perhaps it is for this reason that when I first entered and enquired whether they did perms, they did not look at me with a bemused disgust, as most of the staff in other salons aroung Edinburgh seemed to do. The salon is run by two ladies, Joyce and Gemma, whom upon meeting you would think are a mother and daughter team. They are not infact related. Despite the well priced haircuts and the chocolate you get with your tea or coffee, these two are the reason that you keep on going back. The first style I got took about and hour to complete. I stayed in the salon for three hours, listening to the banter and eating Cadbury treats, and walked away with a jazzy new cut and a sore abdomen from laughing so much. If you are in the mood for a giggle or simply a well done permanant wave, Athena is the place to go!

For many years I had it coloured.... lovely blonde and brown and honey highlights.... until I decided to become a silver fox.... (ha ha) The colour stylist was extremely talented and helped me grow out my colour without ever having a dreaded 'growing out your roots' look. (I originally started going when I needed 'rescuing' from a terrible colour that made me look truly terrible) I have always found the staff to be friendly, intelligent, and compassionate with my absurd neurotic desire to look like someone much better looking than I am!!!

He told me i should have brought a picture but i thought, really? Is that what i have to do? I tried engaging him throughout with questions like, what do you think? Do you think that looks ok? Would you do that to your mother, your sister? ( i did not ask him the latter but wish i could now) But he was not interested. He has cut bits of my hair that should never be cut with a fringe, it looks wrong. Customer service right through the salon is weak and that is the crux of it. I was in hospital for a number of days leading up to the day of my appointment so I called up the salon and told them that I would be 30 minutes late as I hadn't been discharged in time, to which the girl that answered the phone said 'that's fine'. So a very tired me rocked up to the salon only to be told that I had missed my appointment and that I couldn't rebook as I'd not cancelled in time...so I explained the story and rightfully they apologised and asked if I could come back the next day. So 3 o'clock the next dayI show up and don't actually get seen for 35minutes! So I sit there like a lemon in the chair whilst the guy first finishes up with someone else then goes and has a conversation with a number of the staff. I rarely relish a trip to the salon because of the many I've experienced they tend to be quite, how shall I put it, snobby. This place was no different although the guy really was plugging his services for the next time I had to have my hair done which he recommended was something like 4 weeks away and I "really shouldn't leave it any longer". Bog off. I'll get it done when I'm ready to/have time to thank you very much. My hair cut really wasn't that great either. He did what he wanted with the cut (followed my instructions vaguely) but at least I got to pick out the colour of my own hair :) Yay!

I asked if they had any appointments today and the lady at the desk said 3:45. Perfect. Lunch, glass of wine later I walked in hoping for the best. What I got was a great haircut! After months of growing out my hair from the aftermath of a truly horrific haircut at another local establishment, I decided to stop seeing barbers and try a proper salon. This location was just around the corner from my flat and I was initially impressed by how sleek and attractive the shop was. The staff is very warm and offer you tea, coffee, or a latte when you arrive. Stylists work hard to make sure that they understand exactly what you want and give you the best results. I always left happy and feeling refreshed from the "me time". It may be more expensive than some other salons, but it's certainly worth it. They also offer a great student discount!

The past too many to count years Ive been going to James at George St, Ive never had a bad cut from him so never felt the need to try other stylists. I am pretty bad at styling my hair but with his cuts it kind of styles itself and I can always maintain the style afterwards. He is frank and honest, he is friendly but doesn't butter you up with false niceties. I like that I can tell him what I would like and he tells me straight whether it will work or not, he comes up with suggestions for different things to try if he thinks I might have had the same style for too long. He often has to do repair jobs as I have lived in the US for 6 years and have yet to find a decent hairdresser here. On every trip home, pretty soon after I land back in Edinburgh I'm at the salon. I think the prices are good but it can work out to be a pretty expensive cut when you figure in plane fares etc! I occasionally get my hair coloured, again have always been very happy with the outcome, he is good at knowing what suits me. The salon itself can be noisy when its busy, but gives off a pleasant lively vibe. There have only been a couple of times when Ive experienced a stuck up attitude from staff, mostly they are polite and professionally friendly. Even though I am a bit of a plain non-trendy unfashionable person, I've never felt uncomfortable there.
