The menu is small but not plain, specials regularly change and offer more than just the bare minimum. Coffee is good, not spectacular but ironically there aren't that many great coffee places that end of North Hobart. However if you want a coffee past 3pm it's one of the few places that's still open "late"- I.e. 8pm. It's one of the most consistently high quality cafes that end of North Hobart, and it manages to straddle the line between a "cafe" and a "restaurant".

Baxter is hidden up an alley across the road from Beastlands, and provides a small and sweet refuge from such a place. My cubano filled the hole in my belly quite nicely, and was an extra treat as I wasn't expecting such a thing to be available--we were going to just have a coffee at Baxter and then find somewhere to eat, and the sandwiches solved that problem nicely. There's not a great deal of space to dine in (slash outside on the astroturf) but things weren't busy so it was easy for us to pull up a milk crate or three and finish up our sandwiches before we went on our way. Coming from the right (ahem) side of the river, I won't be going out of my way to visit Baxter in the future, but I'll sure point all of my eastern shore friends toward it and make a point to drop in whenever I am pulled eastward!

We dropped in to taste some cheese and ended up staying for lunch with wine, coffee and dessert and it was one of the best lunches we had on our trip to Tasmania. The owner Ashley stopped to talk to us and he is passionate and deservedly proud of his cheese factory. This is small batch artisan cheese making at its best without the high price tag!
