Firstly, know this: Tina is NOT your regular math tutor. She's NOT a grad student hustling to make a few extra dollars, nor is she one of those subscribers to a "system". Rather she is a math counsellor, someone who really learns and understands the way your kid works and finds the ways to reach them with her own unique approach. We started looking for a math tutor for our son over a year ago. While he's relatively young (3rd grade at the time), it was clear there were fundamentals he simply wasn't getting and that I was unable to reach him with. Tina's focus seemed to be primarily kids in HS, but having spoken to her extensively we decided to try working together. In a word, Tina's impact has been profound. She's been able to match her teaching to my son's learning "style", and "gets him" in a way that breaks through. This is huge, and has resulted in a far greater comprehension of the work as well as increasing his aptitude to take on more skills and learn new things. Plus the relationship has translated seamlessly to Zoom as we've had to transition to online tutoring. As a bonus, tutoring isn't perceived as an onerous obligation by him -- he looks forward to it and has fun. Our son was struggling in school for various reasons and we decided to homeschool him for a couple years. We sought out Tina to help him with his math and to help him with other study skills as he geared up for high school. Our son enjoyed his sessions with Tina. He really connected with her. For many juniors and seniors in high school, the omnipresent question of college is one that brings stress to the mind. I came to Tina during not only a personally difficult academic stretch but also a very troubling time for the world, as COVID-19 was just starting to become a much more present issue in Oregon. I was stressed about how school would be affected, if I would even be able to put a dent in my work with an online tutor, and if online tutoring would be any different from watching a video. However, all those worries were quickly dispelled when I first began to meet with Tina online. She did not let the fact that she was forced to teach through a screen effect her commitment to helping me learn or her expectations of my performance to go down. She helped approach my work in a realistic manner, patiently supported my understanding and adjusted to my styles of learning as well as our online circumstances, and most importantly pushed me to really have perspective on my situation and comprehend what I was learning. That was by far the most difficult when the easiest choice would be to just do the bare minimum and work for the grade I see on my computer screen but Tina would encourage me every time I would meet with her not just by telling me I should aim for something but motivating me to want to take myself to that level.
