After 32 small-group sessions over eight weeks, she passed the 3rd-grade Oregon State reading test! As a parent, seeing that growth in such a short time meant more than I can put into words. She also learned to write her name and lowercase letters in cursive--something she was incredibly proud of. What makes Teacher Glenda special is that she doesn't just teach children how to read. She uses engaging nonfiction materials that build background knowledge and understanding. I watched my daughter grow not only as a reader and writer, but also in her knowledge of history and the world around her. There is a sense of genuine interest in the children's progress. Many of the tutors there have been there long-term, and all of them I've seen there seem nice including the owner Noriko (not sure of the spelling). In addition to students primarily speaking English (of course), the needs of Japanese speaking students are met there, too. The small class size and having 2 teachers per classroom meant a lot of one on one time. The teachers truly treat the kids like their own. They did daily art projects, played outside or did activities in the gym (weather dependent), went on field trips, learned their ABC's in sign language, and worked on all of the basic Pre-K skills, such as letters, numbers, days of the week, months, colors, shapes, etc. I feel as though my son has a huge advantage going into kindergarten this coming fall, and this is all due to Scribbles wonderful program.
