My family has been coming here for about 25 years, and we've unloaded heavy things in that same general area many times without issue. Instead of a simple warning or asking us to move, we were immediately given a parking ticket for being on the grass. If the rules have changed or this is now being enforced differently, basic courtesy would be to communicate that first. What made it worse was how the situation was handled. Matt was extremely rude, unprofessional, and unnecessarily confrontational. Longtime visitors shouldn't be treated like that, especially when simply loading/unloading heavy items. Very disappointing experience at a place we've supported and visited for decades.

BLUF: An eclectic mix of abandoned buildings, new construction, restored historical structures and…read moreparks along the Delaware River. Very minimal Navy presence but various companies, some in the shipbuilding industry, occupy space among the 1,200 acres. At its height during WWII, 40,000 people worked at The Navy Yard in Philadelphia both building and repairing ships. However, in 1995 the yard closed as an official Navy base. There is still a tiny Navy presence today and even still some ship building/repairing/demobilization companies on site but it seems to be a shell of its former self. My husband and I enjoyed exploring on bikes for over an hour. There is a really nice bike path along the Delaware River. Also, the streets, at least on a holiday weekend, were almost abandoned so we enjoyed biking without worrying about vehicular traffic. The Navy Yard still has a ghost fleet but except two Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers, CG-58 USS Philippine Sea and CG-60 USS Normandy, we couldn't get a clear view of any of them. I believe there are a handful of other cruisers moored behind one or more of the Rhoads Industries buildings. The highlight for me was the historic architecture. While many buildings are dilapidated, some are beautifully restored. I also enjoyed getting a close view of a few dry docks and one of the slipways that has been converted, in part to sports courts. URBN, the parent company for Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and Free People is headquarters here. There are various other businesses too but except for some the ship-related businesses and a medical office, they all seem to have a small presence. The Navy's presence includes Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) and the Navy police to keep it all secure and safe. I was hoping to find dining and shopping at The Navy Yard but that doesn't really exist. URBN has a food court and there are about three other places where you might find food. Instead, I thoroughly enjoyed the history and architecture and I'm looking forward to learning more about this site. While a trip through the Navy Yard might not be interesting to everyone one, I thought it was fascinating.

If you are a revolutionary war buff this may be your cup of tea…read more Back in the 1700's the colony of Pennsylvania had their own Navy! A land locked state with its own Navy that is right! According to some of the brochures that are in the gift shop Fort Mifflin and Fort Mercer were the reason today we won our independence in the revolutionary war. Very interesting facts and extremely knowledgeable tour guides make this visit a great trip. Some of the original buildings are still standing including some of the jails they housed prisoners in and the buildings where they housed all the ammunition and artillery. Heck, if you want you can even take your lunch where the soldiers took there lunch as they have old benches still there but beware the air is a bit musty being that the building is quite old : ) We were offered this choice as we went with a group of approx twenty people. The tour ended with a firing of a musket and canon fire! They didn't load the musket with a bullet but rather gun powder however that bugger made a heck of a noise when fired, imagine three hundred muskets going off at one time, no wonder a lot of the soldiers lost their hearing in the war. If you are looking for some history you have found it here in Fort Mifflin right near the Philadelphia International Airport. As always people SYOY!!!

One of the things I never realized until I left Philadelphia was the sheer mass of historical…read moreplaces and artifacts I was surrounded by. There are so many places that are important to understanding where we came from that some end up becoming obscure, unknown, sometimes demolished in the name of progress. Then there are those that are saved from that fate, usually by passionate historians and community members who lobby to save the place from being destroyed. In the case of the Lazaretto Quarantine Station and Hospital, they succeeded - just barely. It is a success story worthy of a Hallmark special. The Lazaretto Quarantine Station and Hospital was the first of its kind, built and put into service after the Fever of 1793 swept through Philadelphia, killing 25% of the city's residents. This Quarantine station was built by the City of Philadelphia, long before the Federal Government became interested in such matters, because of the devastation of 1793. The Station served as a first point of entry for ships coming from abroad, where passengers were screened for contagious diseases and either held until their health was assured, turned away or let pass. It, along with the more famous Ellis Island, served as a major portal for immigrants coming to the United States for over one hundred years. It ceased being an immigration point in 1895, after which it was used as a port for seaplanes, an athletic club, and for many years after that, an abandoned property. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, which gave it some protection. It was the threat of demolition that saved it, when a group of citizens and historians worked with Tinicum Township and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to restore the property. It is now home to Tinicum Townships' government offices. Walking around the building, still being restored, it's breathtaking. The long porch facing the river is stunning, the rooms all being carefully preserved while being updated with modern conveniences. I love that this has been done and love that it will continue to serve the residents of the Commonwealth, not from infectious disease, but serving as a place where they might get a building permit, enact ordinances, meet on issues concerning their community. Call this one a win for history.

Our instructor/guide D was very patient and insightful guide as he explained the history of the Mural Arts program in Philadelphia! Our tour started from Columbus Blvd and went through Northern Liberties and Chinatown! I was nervous to go in the streets in the beginning, but once I got my confidence I was enjoying the tour as well as the ease the we went through the neighborhoods! The tour was great and I am now hooked on Segways..I will be exploring Segway Tours when I travel in other cities or countries! Great job Philly Tour Hub!

We were able to stop along the way for coffee and at several sites for a closer look. Adam has vast knowledge of the area and historical sites and was an excellent story teller. Yesterday was the 15th annual Hands on New York Day involving more than 5000 volunteers working on…read moreprojects all around the city. Together we raised more than $130,000 -- fantastic! You can check out their website for more details. My project was at Prospect Park and involved improving the path along the route emanating from the main entrance. This involved garbage collection, edging, soil collection, mulching, and so forth. It was a chance to get down and dirty and help beautify one of New York's greatest landmarks. The enthusiasm and turnout was high, and we got a lot of work done in a short period of time. Everything culminated in a personal thank you from the Brooklyn Borough President himself, Marty Markowitz. It always feels good to part of a big effort that can effectuate change. I was glad I could give back a little bit. Highly recommend and encourage everyone living here to look into to doing it next year!

I finally made a proper visit to the Philadelphia area, and my welcoming area was the Girard Point…read moreBridge. It is an interesting bridge that, if coming from the south is a welcoming arena to the city. Albeit a confusing welcoming arena where people play vehicular leap frog with one another. It reminds me of a few bridges on the other side of the state where you are given a whole lot of shorter notice to change lanes to be where you need to be. It does offer stunning views of the city when driving into it, that is if you aren't the one driving. I was able to glance every so often to see things, but could not take it all in. The bridge carries traffic over the Schuylkill River as part of I-95. You can tell that it is a vital artery for traffic for the city, and from what I read, traffic was a nightmare before the bridge's completion. I will say that I am glad I do not have to take this bridge on a daily basis as I would probably end up hating it instead of appreciating it for the minutes I was on it.
