When I started the parking lot in the main admin building had more cars in it than my home town. It was built on the former site of the Douglas Aircraft Plant. Here's a little history from AI. It began in 1940 when local businessmen, led by Stanley Draper, lobbied the War Department to establish a maintenance and supply depot in the central United States. On April 8, 1941, the order was signed, and construction of the Midwest Air Depot began in June 1941, completing in March 1942. The base was renamed Tinker Field in June 1942 to honor Major General Clarence L. Tinker, an Osage Native American from Pawhuska, Oklahoma, and the first Native American major general in U.S. Army history. Tinker, who earned his wings in 1921 and was awarded the Soldier's Medal in 1926 for bravery, died on June 7, 1942, when his B-24 Liberator crashed during a mission against Japanese forces on Wake Island. During World War II, Tinker played a critical role, repairing B-17 and B-24 bombers, fitting B-29s for combat, and producing C-47 Skytrains and A-20 Havocs at the adjacent Douglas Aircraft plant, which was later acquired by the base. By 1945, the base was formally dedicated as Tinker Field, with 150,000 attendees and a keynote address by Lt. Gen. Ira C. Eaker. In 1946, Tinker modified B-29s for atomic testing at Bikini Atoll, including the Enola Gay, and worked on President Truman's C-54, the "Sacred Cow." The base became Tinker Air Force Base on January 13, 1948, following the creation of the Department of the Air Force.

There were plenty of food vendors and activities for all ages. One of the coolest parts was being able to walk onto some of the model planes and get a close-up look. The air show itself was incredible--definitely a must-see if you're in the area. Looking forward to the next one!
