The owner was very dismissive and mocked me for buying a porcelain figurine for a child. They also don't take credit cards. Chris provided a warm and friendly welcome, plus great insight about the local VT area we were looking to explore. The shop can keep you entertained for hours with a multitude of items that spark childhood memories. We didn't, however, stay long, but yes I did leave with a purchase. Dear Old Woman of Tinker's Barn, You really have a charming antique store since the whole store looks like a classic barn. We always see the shop as we pass by while traveling to and from Burlington via the Lake Champlain Ferry at Gordon's Landing. Today, we had time to kill so we pulled up into your lot. The items that were sprawled all over the front porch already excited me. When we entered, we found you sitting behind a desk and you greeted us. I was amazed at how the inside looked. It looked like a room that belonged to a madman--- everything was organized by kind & at times, even by color-- plates, clocks, salt & pepper shakers, doilies, hats, buttons, graters, egg beaters, etc. etc. I thought, "One could possibly spend a whole day inside just looking at each item from the past." I am giving you two stars because we were turned off by your manner. Apparently, you weren't too comfortable with the fact that we had our kids with us. I was able to tell because you stood up and watched us as we began browsing. I don't understand what your problem was. I was carrying our baby the whole time and my husband was watching our 3 yr old like a hawk. They even stayed right by the entrance where all the "toys" were. I am confident to say that we do a good job in teaching our kids to care for things that are not theirs and especially things that are sold in stores. So, when our daughter wanted to feel how marbles felt and wanted to hear how cow bells sounded, my husband assisted her in showing her. Telling my husband not to let our child touch anything and giving him a lecture about how things were collectibles weren't necessary. We visit antique shops with our kids all the time and we have never encountered such attitude like yours. So, yeah, you turned us off and we didn't feel like browsing the rest of your store anymore. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever. Looking at antiques, I think, is a great way to teach kids how life was in the past and to appreciate and take care of them. Obviously, you were mainly concerned about the monetary value of those objects. I mean, of course, we know they are valuable. If my daughter (or even me!) had broken something, I would readily pay for the damage. Well, you chose to be rude. So, you know what old woman? You can keep your "collectibles" and maybe even bring them with you to the grave. P.S. You should consider changing your store's name into No Tinkering Barn...or better yet, Stinker's Barn. read more

I have to tell you that our experience at Tinker's Barn was the absolute opposite of the review written by the woman with the 2 young children. It appears to me that the writer has other issues going on given the mean spirited last 2 paragraphs of her diatribe. I stopped at Tinker's Barn last week, with my granddaughter in tow. We were warmly greeted by a wonderful woman, the same woman slammed by the previous writer!, JoAnne, the owner of Tinker's Barn. She was absolutely amazing, as is her Barn! It is full of treasures, all amazingly displayed! My granddaughter and I were delighted to be welcome to peruse. JoAnne was patient and thoughtful in answering our questions about her treasures and, in fact, shared with us a plethora of useful and interesting local information. Tinker's Barn is absolutely packed with amazing and unique collectibles. I would recommend it as a "Must Stop!" destination for education, history, adventure, and amazing artifacts of times past. JoAnne keeps everything in pristine condition and is passionate and knowledgeable about every piece in her vast collection!!! As well, her prices are absolutely reasonable considering it is unlikely you will find what she has to offer anywhere else!!! JoAnne!!!! You are a perfect hostess and we will be back again, and again, now that we have discovered you!!!! Not only will we be back, but we will happily bring along family and friends to discover all the wonder you provide for all in your Barn!!! Tinker's barn has been in VT for a long time and will remain an institution despite mean spirited people. JoAnne, the owner, is a sweet lady. Bringing kids into a crowed antique shop is not the best idea. Kids break things and can behave for about the length of a parent's tweet. So shop owners naturally get nervous with kids. They have had plenty of stuff broken. If you visit an antique shop and have to watch your brats like a hawk when do you look at the antiques you came to see and buy. I have to change my opinion from before. The last couple of times that I have been in the "ladies" have been snarky and rude. I was willing to overlook that the items are generally overpriced in order to support local businesses, but this last visit I heard them complain loudly about previous customers and immediately get their hackles up when an 8-ish year-old kid came in who was WELL BEHAVED. Don't even think of asking if there's a restroom. The items are lovely and the decorating is inviting, otherwise their manner is extremely negative. The only smile I saw was when I took out my wallet. read more

Tinker's Barn has been a must-shop for years with my family. Unfortunately, since a change in ownership/management, it is not nearly as good as it used to be. That said, it's still fun to browse around and it's possible to find some fun treasures. There's a neat, eclectic variety of items. Unfortunately, on my last visit I found an item I really, really wanted but it wasn't cheap and the owner doesn't take credit or debit cards: only cash or check. Frankly, I haven't used paper checks in about five years, so I had to leave without my treasured item and I never went back. For anyone traveling in the area, it's a fun diversion and you never know what you might find. Just forget about paying with a debit card! read more

I love the place. Not a piece of junk in sight. Beautiful collections and vintage clothing. Some prices are high but as a dealer I find we have to pay higher prices than in the past (thanks Antique Roadshow) For a person to buy, clean, stock, insure and stay in a shop all day I say they are entitled to a little profit.
