About a month ago, I went with my husband to Morris Formalwear to get him a tuxedo for an upcoming…read moregala. When my husband was still serving in the military he'd always wear his mess kit (since all our formal functions were related to the military), but now that he's retired from the military, he wanted to get a tuxedo for these functions. We were 3 weeks out from the gala when he decided it was time to buy one. A bit last minute, if you ask me, lol. Fortunately, his height and build allows him to buy most items off-the-rack and thus even for formal wear he requires minimal if any alterations. The store was much busier on a Saturday afternoon in May than I expected (although I guess it was prom, graduation and wedding season). We milled around a bit before someone was available to help us. We told the salesman we were looking for a black classic tuxedo. My husband told him his size and he grabbed a jacket for my husband to try on. My husband said "great" and that must have been the quickest $500 sale ever. The jacket required no alterations. The salesman measured my husband's waist and gave him a pair of pants and brought him down to the seamstress in the basement. She pinned the hem, marked the waist to take in a smidge, and we were good to go. They said it would be done in a week. My husband called them the day before we were supposed to pick up to confirm it was done, as we didn't want to make the trip out there for nothing, but there was no answer, so he left a voicemail. They never returned his voicemail. So the morning of, he called again and the salesman said he thinks it's done, but they are really swamped. Uh, ok. So we went. The saleslady helped us this time and after looking around for it for a bit, she found it. It was done and fit perfectly. I must say, my impression was that the saleslady was about customer service. She was friendly and wanted to ensure we were satisfied. My impression was that the salesman was just concerned with making a sale. That's just how I personally felt after our interactions. Also I felt $500 for a tux, not even designer or anything, was expensive, but I guess everything is expensive these days. I think you can get them for less at chains like Moores, but we do like supporting small independent businesses. But whatever, my husband is happy and looks handsome in his tux, so I'm happy ;) Street parking only.

Lots of selection, however service is non-existant. Several people working, very few customers, but…read morethey will practically trip over you and not even acknowledge you, let alone ask if you need any help. I'm not asking that you follow people around the store, but you should at least say hello when customers come into the store. At the very least, it can be a deterrent to shoplifters, at most it will make customers feel welcome. Do better.

So I love going to this Laura/Melanie Lyne because in addition to selling the current season's…read moreitems at regular price, they are also an outlet. They have items from previous seasons at lower prices and I've found some really good deals here. They also have a small selection of off-season items, so if you need a pair of shorts in the dead of winter or a coat in the middle of summer, you might find what you need here. They have a huge selection of regular sizes, petites and plus sizes. They have mostly business attire, but they also have casual wear and evening gowns. I love how I can actually buy evening gowns here off the rack and not need any alterations (albeit only from their petite line). So all you short and slim ladies (e.g. 0P and 2P) who have a hard time finding formal wear that doesn't require paying an arm and a leg for alterations, this is the place for you. Selection is not that great for these very small sizes, but I have purchased many gala dresses here (and a fraction of the regular price). This location also carries a good amount of Joseph Ribkoff, Frank Lyman and Katherine Barclay. Although they usually start at size 8. So great for normal sized people, but not for those wee like me :( I will be the first to admit that many items at Laura/Melanie Lyne are matronly and frumpy, but they also have some more fashionable pieces (although I guess "fashionable" is in the eye of the beholder). I go here often so I can swipe up those pieces at a good price. They have fitting rooms both at the front and at the back of the store. There are washrooms at the back (in with the fitting rooms). This Laura/Melanie Lyne is in a strip mall, so there is a lot of free parking.

This place is awful. I brought three pieces of clothing: one required very simple alterations, and…read morewas done okay, but two required more extensive work. A pair of pants I asked to have taken in at the waist and legs came back with one leg too tight and the other even tighter. There was a difference of almost 3/4 of an inch in the taper. I insisted they be fixed, and the second attempt wasn't much better. I also brought a vintage coat from the 30s to find out if it was worth modernizing. The tailor assured me the fabric was hugely expensive wool. I told him I'd want to get the coat cleaned first to make sure it would look good, and he told me not to worry; he was going to take care of everything. When I asked if he was sure, he told me "Please, I'm here 30 years..." Well, when I got the coat back, looked like it had been sewn by a student, and it was just as unclean as it had been when I dropped it off. I brought it to a dry cleaner and the stains, as I suspected, could not be lifted. Also, the coat wasn't wool. The shop needs more craftsmanship and less con. I wouldn't go back there to hem a pair of Levi's, let alone trust them with anything of value.

Zeina quoted me $240. While the hemming was good, the pinning of the sleeves onto the straps was uneven, the clasp above the zipper was broken off before I could even get home, and she completely botched the alteration to take it in. It looked like she just took the zipper off at the back, rolled the fabric and put the zipper back on. It looked horrible. I did not notice this when I tried it on with her when I was picking it up because I did not see the back. While I should have made a point to make sure the back looked good, I still did not expect to receive such poor customer service and horrible attitude when I called Zeina about it. She responded, and I quote, "that's not my problem", "I did my job 100% right", and "take it to the other seamstress maybe she can ruin it entirely for you". If that is 100% right, please do yourself a favour and have higher standards of what is "100% right" - clearly Zeina's are skewed. When I further asked her for a PARTIAL refund to cover the cost of getting my dress re-altered (at an emergency rate to get it back in time before the wedding), she flat out refused, saying I had to come see her first - and not to get it fixed, just so she could explain why it had to be so horrible-looking. All the while she was telling me that there is no fixing this alteration, this is how it is done. It is in fact, not how it is done, as I took it to a much better seamstress and got it fixed in one day. Not only does Zeina do a poor job altering a dress made out of extremely common fabric, she is a liar too! At my initial appointment she told me about how she used to work for Sinder's (a big bridal boutique located in Carleton Place) for a number of years. After this horrendous experience with her, I followed up with Sinder's about that. They notified me that she has never worked there. So Zeina is using their name and amazing reputation (that they actually earned!) to trick people into spending their hard-earned money on a less than poor service.

Thinking great they are all cleaned, bagged, ready for next year. I picked them up and left. When I opened the bag the coats had WHITE CHEMICAL or SOAP STAINS all over them. These coats could not be worn the way they looked. I took them back, I was told to leave them to be re-cleaned. Again the WHITE CHEMICAL or SOAP STAINS were still there. I was told to come back on Saturday when the owner was there. She told me that I should have looked at the coats initially when I picked them up and that the coats have been cleaned twice. Instead of taking ownership for their mistake of not checking when they receive them back from their outsourcing cleaner, before giving back to their PARKER CLEAN paying customer; she is passing it along to the customer. They did not take responsibly and my coats are now unwearable. WARNING DO NOT USE THIS DRY CLEANER!!!!
