The fotress became in 1305 Norwegian because of help from the Norwegian king building it. Later the Norwegian King's daughter inherited the place, married a Swede and the fortress became a semi-independent Scandinavian state before it became Swedish in 1645. Today it's a beautiful place to hang out, have lunch or just take a walk. Check out the museum or stay at the hostel. Sometimes there are also being held concerts at the fortress.

You can either start south of the Fortress, just by the Bohusbron Bridge (there's a parking lot, 4 hours free) or north of the Fortress at the Ställplats - Husbil Camping and Parking lot (fees apply). The walk along the water and around the Fortress is quite short, but very nice. Sheep roam around free here, so please be respectful of their territory. Dogs are allowed though. There's a bunch of benches with nice views and some water access in case your furry friend needs a quick dip (ours did). If you are visiting the Fortress, be sure not to miss out on this little walk. Not only that, but the plaza is definitely a great place to stand on a clear day to take in the view of downtown. The main attraction of the plaza is the large fountain of Poseidon, which is certain to stick out in the mind of any visitor. It's pretty much the perfect meeting point, except for any day when there's a festival, in which case, the place is bound to be overflowing with people.

Knowing it's a short 45-minute scenic drive from Gothenburg, we jumped at the opportunity to make a day trip, and what a glorious day it was. Carlsteen Fortress, along with boating culture and royal history, is what Marstrand is known for. The massive stone fortress sits atop the rocky island. It took more than 200 years to build, and was in use by the military as recent as 1990's. A guided tour is highly recommended so you can learn other fascinating stories about this fortress. Give yourself plenty of time to explore, as they are many rooms to check out and lots of climbing. The roof-top view is magnificent, those white and pastel blue, yellow, green wooden buildings start at the sea level and climb up towards the Fortress. During sailing season, imagine a view of hundreds of yachts taking part in the many international regattas here. If you happen to chat with a local (they are friendly), they are very proud of their boat (usually. boats). A must-visit. Bring you camera. This place is as pretty-as-a-postcard.

From what I saw it was massive and parts of the stones were taken to build homes surrounding the area before they decided to preserve the history. The statue caused a lot of debate when the plans of it were revealed to the public, and it is still a hot topic of discussion. People in Borås were upset for several reasons: 1. The statue cost several millions of swedish crowns and even though a large part was donated by private donors, the Town of Borås shipped in parts. Peopel who were against the idea of a giant Pinocchio statue right in the middle of twon didn't like how their tax money had to pay for it. 2. A majority of money came from a few rich private citizens and it was also their idea to begin with. Is it morally right that a few rich individuals can decide how the city should decorate its public spaces, especially since most citizens were against the statue to begin with. 3. Jim Dine has no connection to Borås, and neither does Pinocchio, so most people are really baffled when they spot the giant sculpture, especially in such a prominent location, at the end of one of the main shopping streets of the city centre and next to the main drive through street. You can't miss it when coming into Borås or hanging out downtown. People are/were afraid that Borås would become a joke because of the giant sculpture. Well, at least the statue gave Borås a lot of free publicity. The sculpture was unveiled in 2008 to a crowd of 13 000 people.
