Master Breunig and other instructors are all so welcoming and offer a terrific experience. My kid gets to learn new skills, get great exercise, and have a lot of fun with other kids. It's also wonderful the classes incorporates skills and values like respect, self-esteem, self-control, and responsibility. The 'Tiny Tigers' class is excellent and does a great job of making the activities and instruction fit well for kids of different ages and skill levels. Even small things, like at the end of class Master Breunig will put his hand up high (depending on how old the kid is) and each kid tries to jump up to hit him with a high five. The kids love it, and it's something that can be tailored to small and bigger kids. I also appreciate the different class times for for the Tiny Tigers class and that it is centrally located in the Chevy Chase Arcade building.

We tried a few places before going here but none matched what we were looking for which is a community for our daughter but also balanced discipline with solid instructional guidance. She has now earned her way through a few graduation belts and continues to thrive. Most important she looks forward to her weekly class schedule which have now become part of her routine. She is always welcome here with first name as the master knows every student and is always encouraging. Our son will be starting here as well in a few months. here

I'm also jumping in to disagree with Christine H's review. Granted, the space is small, but dirty? I constantly see the instructors cleaning it. I get the feeling that Christine is expecting a million-dollar mansion and for her child to be treated like a saint. Yes, they discipline the kids...but do you expect them to run wily-nily sans discipline? Better the studio instill discipline in these children while they're young instead of letting bad behavior go unchecked. Another misconception is that more than one kids' class goes on at once---not true. The kids' classes are large and are split in smaller groups which each instructor is assigned to handle. Yes, the space is small, but we work with what we've got. Obviously it's a great studio because for every student who leaves, more sign up.

BS is owned and operated by local strongman and former CrossFit gym owner Steve Michael - an incredibly knowledgeable, experienced, and generally strong dude. Steve's approach combines the best of old-school, no-nonsense training methods with a friendly, laid-back sense of humor. His training style is encouraging and fun without being intimidating at all, and his classes are a diverse mix of all ages/genders/body types/fitness levels with a common desire to get stronger and get in better shape. In summary, I HIGHLY recommend this as an alternative to your typical group strength training classes (like CrossFit) where you don't get a lot of individual attention, and the focus is just on cranking out a bajillion reps until oblivion and without proper form. The instructors (Chris and the two Seans) teach a very modern approach to BJJ. Instead of just showing a position, practicing it a few times, and then sparring, they have us play games to really drill in the position and how it connects to the overall picture. I have found this style to be extremely beneficial as a beginner who is still trying to understand the fundamentals. One of my favorite things about the gym is the strong sense of community. On Thursdays we go out to a Mexican restaurant after class and travel to other gyms. Whether you are new to BJJ or have been practicing for a while you'll be sure to find an awesome community and phenomenal training here at Groundworks. OSS!

Would give this place an 11 out of 10 and recommend to anyone looking for a place to train while visiting DC or even begin their jiu jitsu journey.
