The couple who run this B&B are incredibly friendly and just lovely people to have a conversation with over one of their trademark HUGE full English breakfasts! They have a wealth of knowledge about places to go and things to do in the nearby Peak District National Park, and are also authorities on the local pubs! The rooms are not big but very cosy and homely, with small en suite bathrooms in every room. The beds are out of this world comfortable, and are so high and well-stocked with pillows that it is a struggle not to think that you may have been coronated some kind of monarch between coming through the door and sitting down on the bed! Rowsley is peaceful and very pretty - a stereotypical Peak District village, and my girlfriend and I always look forward to our stays here.

The stars aligned and YES, I had a reservation (restaurant is open only 4 nights/week). Its tucked away on back roads near the River Trent. We arrived early and took a stroll for a couple hours around the river. Upon our return, we were immediately led to a perfectly cozy, quaint room. Outdoor patio seating, indoor seating area, cold water, fantastic tea & coffee, with fresh milk in the room were waiting along with a hot shower and plush towels. We were so comfortable, we were disappointed that we had to rush off for meetings. We returned for our 9pm dinner reservation. We arrived 15 minutes early for a cocktail. And then we were led to the table for our culinary adventure to begin. I have been to 2 star Michelin restaurant, Melisse and 3 star Michelin restaurant Per Se and each restaurant offers a unique experience. Sat Bains was elegant, yet casual and the only one to offer a room that was commensurate with the dining experience. Thus, its been our favorite experience. We opted for the 7 course tasting menu and added Duck Egg and Wine Pairings. The 7 courses included Scallop, Deer, Royal Kidney, Grouse, Chocolate and Blackcurrant. The wine pairings were a global experience, as well, with wines from Germany, Australia, Hungary, Uruguay, Argentina, New Zealand and California. Its always a challenge with an evening like this to not "tap out." We barely made it through, but loved the ability to schlepp to the comfort of our room. But it doesn't end there! In the morning, an incredible breakfast is provided in the atrium. Fresh orange juice, the BEST yogurt I had ever eaten, etc. After breakfast, I just wanted to go back to sleep, but alas, back to work. Finally, ALL staff was friendly, accommodating and we would love to return. An extraordinary experience.

Like…read morehis counterpart in SF, the seaonality and local focus of ingredients yields magic when combined with his creative combinations and technique. -Oxtail in mushroom ketchup, served with a sous-vide duck egg and shaved porcinis. Apparently the ketchup is of 1700s historical recipes brought back by Heston Blumenthal . LIke a Worcestershire sauce, it melded with the beef and egg, paired with Radikon 'Oslavje' from Friuli. -Brassicas, radishes, flowers, charred onion ash, and smoked Hollandaise. A signature off of his tasting menu, it was surprising that this was served after the protein but then the smoked elements with the ash maybe strong enough to mask the complexity of the former mushroom ketchup. I think I'd make a UK trip for the Olympics next year as an excuse to come and try more of his fare.

Generally I found it good value for money, not cheap, but with a nice comfy four poster bed (which Ninja found very comfy - see photo), tea and coffee on hand, and its own parking it was not bad. Unfortunately it lost half a star for not having the heating on before we arrived (it was brass monkey weather) and another half for not getting into the corners and behind the fittings with the hoover (something I've noticed happening more and more in Britain) people do look you know! It was great fun to watch the chickens and the big fat turkey strut his stuff in the garden (he survived Xmas I hope he had the same luck with New Year). The breakfast was very generous. Thick cut bacon with delicious butcher style sausages and not a baked bean in sight. The only downside was the ever changing bread, from a bakery style loaf (yummy) to a Warburtons sliced (yucky), it was never the same from day to day.

They greeted us warmly on arrival and were very chatty over breakfast. They clearly love what they do! Really nice rooms - delightfully comfy beds and tea/coffee facilities in the rooms. Ours didn't have its own bathroom, but we knew that on booking and didn't mind. It was a lovely bathroom down the hallway! One of the highlights of the place is the little farm outside. There's a dove hut, bee hives, a turkey and chickens. You can buy a pot of honey to take home! Amazing award-winning breakfast to top off the stay. Homemade bread, really tasty sausages and bacon, and lots of fresh fruit and yoghurt. We didn't want to leave! There's a few pubs within walking distant although we came back a bit tipsy at 11pm and got told off for giggling, so be respectful

It's in a…read moregreat location, just about a 15 minute walk (partially along the forest path near the River Cam) south of the city center, which also makes it more convenient to walk to Grantchester village if you want to visit the Orchard Tea Gardens (which you should do!). If you are arriving at the Cambridge train station a cab is only about £6 as of 2014 if you don't want to drag your luggage through the forest, which we found out the hard way. Jonathan is a very kind and helpful host, and everything is chosen with great care, from the modern yet functional fixtures, to the clean and unusually large beds compared to other beds we encountered in the UK, to the beautifully handpicked furniture. Jonathan also buys groceries early every morning, so the fresh fruit and local sausage and bacon he serves are outstanding. He also makes perfectly cooked eggs, as well as delicious homemade fruit smoothies! I would definitely stay here again.

We loved our stay and felt very welcome at Honeyholes. One more thing I will say the decor is very vintage, dark wallpaper in some rooms, flowers everywhere (even on the loo roll!); it oozes character, but you have to like that sort of thing.

On arrival the alarm bells rang and that was just looking at this place from the outside. I was greeted by the very pleasant John and shown to my room. Although clean enough, the room was in a really bad state of repair and the decor was extremely tired to say the least. When I go away, I expect a decent standard of accomodation and this fell way short. I was really annoyed as I had travelled a long way to get here. The Kirk Lea Guest House website is extremely misleading and there are lots of issues within the room I was due to stay in. The window would not close, there was a burn on the polystyrene light fitting and the floor was very uneven. The furniture was very worn and damaged and nothing matched at all, not an attempt to look "shabby chic" I can promise. There have been some attempts to decorate by the current staff who are well aware of the appearance of the place and were very apologetic when I approached them with my impression of the place. They were helpful and could not have done more to assist me in finding a suitable alternative. This review in no way reflects on John and Val who are lovely people and I wish them well for the future!.
