Be fair to say this is definately a gastro pub as meals are its main priority and punters are not allowed to go there for just a drink. They do however have a range of tempting meals on the lunchtime, carveries on the Sunday (approx. £7 plus pending on how many courses ordered) & range of steak/grill dishes (approx. £13 mark) plus other dishes. Drinks are a bit pricey (just as well it is not a drinking mans pub !). The place is ideal for family, groups/friends & couples. The interior is traditional with some modern touches here and there with a lounge/bar area, restaurant area plus the conservatory. The place is always very busy (they can have up to 500 booked in on a Sunday lunchtime !) so booking is definately advisable. Staff are very friendly & helpful on the whole although service can be a little slow (pendant on the amount of customers). One last thing is that this place is well worth visting for a special occassion and/or Christmas lunches if you wish to spoil/treat yourself. All around big thumbs up.

Unfortunately where I was sat the beepity beepity bong of an attention seeking quiz machine somewhat disrupted any spell. Evans Evans Warrior from a barrel behind the bar was good and Theakston dark made for a competent sidekick (The supervillians being The Speckled Hen and The Abbot). Looks like they normally have a couple of beers served from the barrel, but possibly by Sunday a weekends heavy drinking had weakened them.

I've only ever seen one on at a time - when it runs out, another is tapped - but it's always worth trying a pint (it's quite reasonably priced, about £2.50 a pint right now). The staff are lovely, the pub quiz on a monday night is always packed with a mix of older locals and younger students (getting along fine!), and there's often live music courtesy of local bands and singer/songwriters.

It's insane!) The food is good and there are always different offers on and a good specials menu to choose from. My only complaint is that they never have Pimm's - nobody orders it, so my brother says. But they redeem themselves for having my favourite flavour McCoy's. Thursday night is quiz night and usually pretty busy, but the same could be said of any other night of the week - it varies from week to week. A nice local pub.

It looks quite small from the outside, but it is quite deceiving. The bar is tiny but the restaurant is most spacious. I have visited in the past for a cheeky pint when in that area but not very seldom over the years. On this particular occasion, the Easter Sunday, my family and I decided to visit for lunch. We had frequented the neighbouring Harry Watkins on several occasions for Sunday lunch/carvery and we had been meaning to try the White Lion for a change. (As it happens my current employers frequent the White Lion, so I was volunteered the phone numbers of the landlords. So I took them up on that and booked for Easter Sunday.) My family and I were pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent. My father and I had garlic mushroom for starters, whilst my sister and her husband & daughter had French Onion soup. We all had carvery lunch, there was a good choice of vegetables and meat and two types of stuffing even (the small joys of carvery!). My mother had her vegetarian option of quorn fillet with vegetarian gravy for main plus veg. The family followed on my rather large ice cream sundaes. The cost was reasonable for the meals £8 for one course, £11 for two courses and £13 for three courses - so quite competitive with other rivals. The staff are very friendly courteous and pleasant. The service is quite quick & prompt. The atmosphere is very family friendly too. In all a very enjoyable experience, made for a nice alternative to some of the offerings at chain pubs. It slightly edges it over Harry Watkins nearby I feel. It looks like my families' and my new favourite place for Sunday lunch/carvery.
