A small, old looking building with Japanese items inside. Reminds me of the old places that you could go and get candies and snacks. This might be one of the only places to get Japanese pickles and other Asian snacks. They had musubi at the counter but since I came pretty late, I had no idea how long it was out there. It was just in a case at room temperature. They might be part of the really good tasting Tokyo Inn that is right next door. Parking was good and it's a place to visit for sure if you are craving some Japanese items. read more

First time coming here with my kids. This is a super small Asian store that sells a lot of things that I can't find in Bryan College Station so it was nice and convenient for me. The prices are either reasonable or cheap. Whenever we're in San Antonio again, we'll definitely stop by again. They also have a sushi joint next door that only opens for dinner. こんにちは! Tune in Tokyo Mart! This place is a pretty great Japanese grocery store. It's across the parking lot from Niki's Tokyo Inn sushi restaurant, so you know it's legit. This place is San Antonio's oldest Japanese market, so it's a bit run down and dustier than the newer Japanese markets in town. However, the prices are much better than the competition! Admittedly, the selection is not as varied as the other market, but check out these prices. I tried out my Japanese on the clerk, and got some giggling, but not much else. They didn't seem to know much Japanese beyond "Hello" and "Thank you." I was a bit disappointed that she didn't know of or have any resources to help with Japanese language study, but that's not her role at a grocery store. I did notice a shelf of Japanese literature by the register, which seems like a book exchange where you can get some cheap literature. I asked if they had any Manga or Anime in there, and the clerk said they don't carry that stuff, it's all trashy Japanese romance novels in there. The frozen stuff seemed like it was still fresh, and not all freezer burned. They seem to go through a good amount of stock, so the stuff isn't all out of date, it's fresh merchandise. The merchandise trends towards serious cooks and food prep in the Japanese way, instead of fun crazy stuff that's more for kids or such. The shelves are well stocked, and the prices are clearly displayed. Parking was easy with a dedicated lot that is shared with the sushi restaurant off of Hildebrand. Niki's next door is worth checking out too! read more

Great selection of snacks, including but not limited to pocky, mochi, meji chocolates, and some frozen taiyaki that you can heat up in the oven. They also have both ceremonial and culinary grade matcha. Overall a solid spot for Japanese snacks. read more

I love this market! I am a California transplant and for the longest time was ordering my goods online as I didn't know San Antonio had a Japanese Market. They are always well stocked and I have never found something they didn't have. I don't live in San Antonio so its a bit of a drive so I make sure to stock up while I am there!I think right now is an even more important time to support local mom and pop businesses, so they are still here when we need and want them. read more

Stopped in here on the way south to get some supplies for my hot and sour soup. The lady inside was nice and helped me find some black vinegar. They had a limited selection of products compared to other Asian markets I frequent. Their prices were pretty steep, $4.95 for an 8oz can of straw mushrooms. Simple place. read more

When I lived and worked in San Francisco and Berkeley I had the luxury of hopping on the Geary bus and going to Japantown. I was spoiled: four blocks of Japanese stores and restaurants. It was possible to find all manner of things, my favorites being exotically packaged goods for all kinds of occasions. There was also a huge bookstore called Kinokuniya Bookstore. It carried Japanese stationery items and pens. I can't do that in San Antonio. There is no Japan Town Mall, so this little store is where I go if I need something. It's a small store but it has a decent selection of items (for San Antonio anyway). If you are looking for a special gift for someone who loves odd items this could be the place to go. The cashier does not wear a kimono. She is not even Japanese. But she is always helpful. read more

It's all we have in San Antonio. That has so many of the authentic items from Japan if you like bread definitely get some milk bread.

The Onigiris here are amazing! Get the Bonito ones! A nice, little selection of Japanese staples, they have everything you need to make perfect rice. They also own the restaurant next door, very good sushi! It's kinda tucked away but that only makes it more magical. read more

This place looks a little worn and I was apprehensive about going in to purchase food items. Nonetheless, and because I was desperately looking for a fresh white miso paste, I took a deep breath and walked in. The store is small but if you're an Asian foodie cook, this place is for you! Again, the place is older but it's clean and the attendants are super helpful and friendly. I was amazed at the options of sauces, noodles, mixes, frozen items, etc... and guess what?, I now have an amazing favorite fresh miso paste! Since my initial visit, I have gone back multiple times and every time I visit, I leave with a bagful of delicious new adventures and a huge smile knowing the ones I cook for, will soon share in the culinary treasures and my smile! By the way, overall, it's affordable. read more

The original Japanese store of San Antonio, this place has certainly seen some better days. But it's a great place to visit if you want to avoid the congestion of Minnano Mart. You'll find a number of the same items at this store, although there are admittedly much fewer items. But it's nice to have space to walk around and shop, so I think it's worth a visit. read more

Nice little store and a good selection of Japanese basic products. The building itself I have to say is not inviting from the outside. I guess it's an old neighborhood and has a lot of run down buildings but overall not bad but not great. If I'm ever in the area I will pick something up from here but I would rather stick to the other Japanese market as it's closer to where I live and more aesthetically pleasing with more of a selection. read more

My wife is Japanese and we frequent Tokyo Mart, Minano Mart, and Tim's Oriental Market. Each store has its pros and cons. The following is what my wife likes about Tokyo Mart: The #1 reason my wife likes Tokyo Mart is their used Japanese book selection. The books range in price from .50 to about $1.50. The books are from famous writers and many are best sellers. She states that Minano Mart's books are fewer the author's are unknowns. The #2 reason is that they have many different anko manju (bean paste and mochi snacks). Additionally, the price is better than Minano Mart. While Tokyo Mart is a smaller and older store, my wife prefers it to any other Japanese store in San Antonio for it's variety of good books, selection of anko manju, and price. read more

I've been coming here for over a decade. It never occurred to me to write a review just because Yelp didn't exist at the time when this place took most of my money. This is a good place to peruse if you're just curious. They have a lot of interesting little trinkets, mugs, figures, rice bowls and such at reasonable prices (I have no qualms about paying $3.50 for a well made rice bowl). They also have a good selection of mochi in their refrigerators and intriguing snacks on their shelves. Ten years later, I'm cooking more often and watching my carb intake so I bypass the mochi and snacks. This allows me to see the light and recognize that in terms of cooking basics, they have pretty much everything that would need if you wanted to start cooking Japanese food. I was on a misson yesterday for Yamaki anchovy soup bags since I've only been able to find and buy them once in the Austin. Another bonus is that the prices here are cheaper than the Asian markets I'm use to going to in Austin (bonito @ TM: $4, bonito in Austin: $7). It makes sense that they would have a lot of cooking goods since they supply Niki's Tokyo Inn right next door. Overall, this is a great place to kill time if you're just curious, and most definitely if you're looking for a missing ingredient in your Japanese cooking. read more

I like this place. I have to admit, I was wary of making the trip because I checked out the few pictures online, the place is smallish and the building is older. I was all "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" and out of sheer desperation, I made the trip. Wow, am I glad. They are small. But there are things here I can't get without a) bothering relatives to send stuff directly from Japan or 2) order online and WAIT. (nooooooooooooooo!!!) The selection is still pretty decent, and I really like the staff. There's all kinds of stuff that isn't what I consider touristy or caters to the cutesy-geared-towards-foreigners kind of stuff. Good selection of candy and snackages, including an unnamed confection I haven't seen since I was a kid living in Japan back in the 70's - 80's - no, I am not telling you what it is, because then there will be a huge rush on the stuff and then there will be no more for me. And I truly love this stuff. This was as good as currency in school. ("and she won't tell us what it is?!!? you cry - to which I answer 'NOPE" and you quietly call me a name that would be caught by profanity filters) It's small, it's hidden back off the street, and the floors creak like old houses do. I did not expect SA to be the mecca of all things Japanese. However, Tokyo satisfies the yen for Nihonshokuhin. Decent selection of basic Japanese ingredients and some vegtables like burdock, kabocha, and satsumaimo. While it would rate a 3 stars elsewhere, here it get 4 stars. read more

Protect your checkbook! The snacks here will consume your budget for food this month. And this is before you get to the utensils and condiments. My kids love the Sakura moshi, sadly frozen but tasty. Try to avoid the candy, get the staples first otherwise you got home with $30 of sweets and no real food. The sesame seed grinder has become a fixture in our home. The freshly ground seeds are a perfect alternative to salt at the table. read more
