Food fight, food fight, food fight!!! As the other reviewers have pointed out, Tokyo Teppanyaki is not your regular upmarket meal. In fact you could even say that it is 70% entertainment and 30% eating. The first time we went here I had no idea of what to expect. I didn't even know what Teppanyaki was (The word teppanyaki is derived from teppan, which means iron plate, and yaki, which means grilled, broiled or pan-fried - so wikipedia tells me). It gives your cook the opportunity to cook in front of guests. Having no idea what to expect probably heightened the experience for my first time. So just go there and don't read on. STOP READING NOW! If you've decided to find out more then you can expect plenty of the following: - the bowl and rice catch - the egg in your face - more comical events The food itself is actually really good. And you don't have to work for it every time. We ordered sashimi on the side which was also really good. Starting at $65 this isn't a cheap meal. But it is definitely worth the experience if you want an amusing night. It is really the chefs who make the experience and they might be from anywhere in Asia but all have the common thread of being a riot! I've had better teppanyaki, but I do like the effort this place put in. We had a birthday party here and the service was good. The servers were always refilling water and our drink orders and the chef "Crazy John" was hilarious. The downside was that the food was overcooked and often burned. I ordered the Osaka Set for $65 and hubby ordered the Emperor's Set for $100. He said afterwards that it wasn't worth the $35 extra. He got half a lobster tail, wagyu beef, scallops and a dessert for the extra money but the lobster tail was actually a crayfish and was very overdone. Seafood in general should only be cooked for a short period of time, but most of it was rubbery and overdone. Hubby said that my steak for the $65 set was better than the wagu that he received. They do all the fancy grilling/chopping/throwing of food, which was very well done and then moved us to another table up front for the birthday cake and tea and coffee. The reason I'm not giving a meh, i've had better is that they give you really nice service and a birthday photo for you to keep at the end. The details are nice but the kids birthdays, (screaming, bumping of chairs) and the actual food isn't as good as other places. It's good for a group but not for a date night. I love this place! This is a great place to eat at if you are looking for that fun factor and not just an average meal out. Whenever I have some one stay with me who isn't from Melbourne TT always gets a mention. I've also attended many a birthday here... Aside from all the novelty bowl throwing antics from the chef, this is actually yummy food. Full of flavor and authentic spices, doesn't matter which chef is yours for the night they always deliver a great show and an even more tasteful culinary experience. An evening full of fun will range from anywhere between $60-$90 a little on the spendy side but totally worth the experience. read more

Remember when our parents used to hand out punishments for throwing food? Obviously these guys are just that rebellious that they turned food fights into something we would pay to see. They have mastered the art of throwing eggs and fried rice at all their patrons, but are you good enough to the it in a bowl the size of your hand??? These entertaining chefs throw, flip, dice, chop and basically make the food in front of you dance on the hot plate while throwing in a few jokes while entertaining your group with a delicious array of food. This place screams amazing! From the good humoured chefs cooking up a storm right in front of you, to the feel of the place, the delicious food and the sensational sake. I am a big big fan. I have now been here a few times as they often do groupon deals which are sensational value, 10-12 course meals of fresh meat and seafood. Ladies I suggest you do not wear white as rice and egg gets thrown at you A LOT, unless of course you are pro at catching these things in your mouth. The service is wonderful also. The last time I went they offered to give us the same deal when we came again next time, so of course we booked in no questions asked. Four of us came here for a birthday dinner, and we had a really enjoyable dinner, with a sideshow to match courtesy of the chefs. They sure knew what they were doing. I was a little apprehensive to be honest, my first ever experience as a little boy with teppanyaki was kinda frightful, what with all that banging and clanging about on the hot plate, the mid- air acrobats of the salt- pepper- seasoning vessels, and that super super sharp knife the chef manipulated almost all at one go without seemingly harming anyone. Nothing's changed with that experience. But the chefs here are highly trained of course, and really engage their dinner guests. Yep, there was fried rice in a bowl flinging, and omelette in your mouth/ face catching, but it only adds to the overall experience and some funny moments. Perhaps not so funny when you get it all over you, because you didn't quite try to catch it. See, I realised later the audience(you) needs to also participate with the chef and not just expect the aim of the chef to be spot on all the time. Oh well. Better luck next time Benny! We had ten courses- let me recall. First was an appetiser of pickled bean sprouts and carrots. Then a small plate of a pice of California hand roll with a spring roll , then miso soup, after that grilled prawns and chicken fillet, lamb fillet (expertly done) , beef fillet with mushrooms( so good with the white miso dipping sauce), fried rice and lastly desert of ice cream. There's a variety of choices with the menu sets, so you can add more if you've got a bigger party or just plain ravenous. Our set also came with warm sake, and boy does that knock your socks off. Pretty potent stuff! If you order the prawns, you must try the grilled prawn legs/ head bit that they will politely bring and ask if you would like to try. The best bits of prawn flavour are all in the head and the crunch element of the legs is remarkable. Makes you wonder what we in the western world tend to discard in terms of food when we miss out on the best bits like this (as a side note, in south east Asian cuisine, prawn heads are often cooked down for the extra oomph of flavour for broths and curries, what the Japanese would refer to as "umami" as well. The French make bouillabaisse with lobster shells too, and we know how delicious that is). I'd like to return again soon. May I suggest a great place for a second maybe third date? read more

"HONESTLY....JUST A HUGE BIG RIP-OFF...." I'm sitting here eating a bowl of nutri-grain, after having just returned from a '10 COURSE MEAL' at TOKYO TEPPANYAKI in Chapel Street, South Yarra.... In fact, my whole family are hopping into a big bowl of cereal, here with me, as I write....they wanted McDonalds afterwards, but I just couldn't acquiesce - I told them it was too late to eat fast food...but really, I was kinda too angry.... Anyway I'd bought a groupon voucher for 4 adults - Made a booking for this evening - Cost $169 plus $25 for 4 mineral waters...taking the car, I'm driving, so alcohol free tonight... That's almost $50 each, and I tell you the total food we got would have NOT filled a medium sized dinner plate, each...Just bloody truly absolutely embarrassing...! What we got was nice..no doubt about that..the 4 strips of beef was good, so too the tiny mound of terriyaki chicken, but you cannot seriously call 3 small pieces of grilled squid a course...can you? Nor, 4 tiny pieces thin white fish? And neither 1 grilled prawn...a course?? Can you...?? Seriously?? AND NO VEGETABLES TO BE FOUND..NOT ANYWHERE - I do not call the chopped spring onion and grated carrot in the twinsy bowl of VEG fried rice,,a VEGETABLE dish.. And their use of a ball of butter and some serious salting on everything, whilst grilling, was just AN ANATHEMA - GOING AGAINST ALL THE NOTIONS OF EATING A HEALTHILY GRILLED JAPANESE MEAL..it all tasted the same - of butter, salt and soy sauce.... And if I want entertainment...I'd rather buy 4 tickets to the circus...I honestly did not enjoy having a burning hot piece of omelette tossed into the nape of my neck...still got A RED MARK FROM IT...quite UNBELIEVABLE...!! After the final course, a tiny creme caramel with 1/2 scoop vanilla ice-cream, we got up to go...the people beside us asked "is it over..?", "yes, I answered, that's it..", "you're kidding" they said "we thought that was the entree! What a joke!", "yes, we won't ever be coming back.." I replied. Well, the phenomenon I just cannot get over is this...Why are they so God damned busy....? My boys said it's cos there are so many people in Melbourne..none of them have to be return customers, and the restaurant will still do well....This doesn't wash with me.... I think it's because if you pay HALF price, you get HALF or LESS THAN HALF a feed, and if this is the case....then steer clear of any and all TOKYO TEPPANYAKI DEAL VOUCHERS - It's a great big con.... All in all - don't get ripped off..Pay $100 each, and get a decent taste.. I took my partner here for their birthday after they admitted they had never had Teppanyaki. After much googling, I discovered that Tokyo Teppanyaki, while not the best food, certainly puts on the best show. Ain't that the truth. We were wowed by the culinary skills of these chefs as they cooked everything in front of our eyes. My partner was forced to catch as much rice in a bowl as he could and serve the table (which led to many laughs on my behalf, particularly when he dropped it.) The staff were fantastic and asked us if we were here for a special occasion, and upon finding out about the birthday they came back with a deep-fried ice cream cake, a samurai sword and a camera. The photo is still on my desk at home. Yes it is expensive, but the show and the service make it totally worth it. I think this is a great venue for a special occasion, or a date with a splash of fun. read more

Forget themed theatre restaurants, at Tokyo Teppanyaki you'll get a feast for your senses - sight, sound, touch, hearing and taste! We came here for dinner one night and were tickled pink at the night's festivities. For those who have never been to a full-on teppanyaki restaurant, the experience can either be daunting enough that you hate it or you can join in the fun and have a ball. Needless to say, we chose the latter. We made a booking for four at 7pm and were seated around the teppanyaki tables which then become the stage for the night. Soon after we arrived, the show began with our animated chef going out of his way to tease, entertain and make us laugh. Being a chef is never easy but being a teppanyaki chef is another thing completely. We watched as they chopped, tossed, sliced and juggled our food - throwing it in the air and miraculously catching it with our plates. Set meals start at $65 per head and include lots of succulent seafood like king prawns, scallops and fish, There's also a variety of fresh meat such as lamb cutlets, wagyu steak, chicken steak, with juicy vegetables. There's also a vegetarian menu for greenies. This is dinner entertainment to the maximus and is guaranteed to bring lots of laughs and full stomachs. Really disappointing experience. The food was very bland, but I could have overlooked that if the experience was good. Unfortunately the atmosphere was terrible. The chef didn't speak with us, look at us or engage with us at all. He kept his head down and quickly cooked the food and then served it on a plate in front of us. I had to ask for him to throw some food to get that teppanyaki experience. In response he simply tossed a bow of rice to my partner and I and then quickly packed up the grill. There was zero entertainment factor and the food was way overpriced. Don't waste your money - there are much better teppanyaki restaurants in Melbourne. read more

There is nothing to like about this restaurant. From the moment you walk in to the joint with a booked time of 8.30, only to be directed to the bar to purchase overpriced drinks whilst waiters and patrons spill food and drinks over you as they try to squeeze by. Finally get a table at 9.30, the staff were rude, especially the manager John and the food was ordinary at best. Stay at home and order take-away, you'll be better off financially and your night won't be ruined. read more

A disgrace! Chaos! Rubbish food! Our group of 14 waited 90 mins for chef 1. Chef 2 turned up even later. Half the table thus was finished 30 mins earlier. Dishes out of sync. Barely a cooking display. Crap entree of foodcourt quality sushi. Mediocre mains. Just awful. Our friends were upset we took them somewhere so bad. Food Bill was $1200. Over $85 a head.
