Ok your first question might be Who is Matt Talbot? If you're a member of the Pioneer Association, you might know him pretty well, but I myself don't no many Pioneers these days!
Anyways Talbot, grew up in the North side of Dublin in a working class family. He left school at a young age and took up the drink pretty quickly, as his brothers and friends, and his own father all had quite the drinking problem. It wasn't before long that Talbot himself became an alcoholic and spent all of his earnings on drink. It got so bad that one point he even stole a fiddle from a street musician so he could sell it for the drink! After 16 years of this, Talbot found himself completely penniless and no longer able to afford to go the pub. He figured that one of his friends would be kind enough to invite him in, but they all passed him by without a word and thus he decided to 'take the pledge'. From that day on Talbot never touched another drink for 40 years! Throughout Talbot's entire sobriety he became an increasingly devout Catholic and on his death his fame grew. Today he's regarded as a saint of alcoholics in the states. Steps were also taken towards canonisation and thus his body was moved from Glasnevin to Lourdes.
His tomb is now on display there and it has a glass covering so you can see through it. read more
