Restaurant area was dirty the last time we went in, bathrooms are shameful and what little bit you can see of the kitchen usually looks unclean as well. Service is hit or miss and the food simply isn't good. read more

I was in Washington County during the off season so just about every food vendor is closed except those associated with a gas station. Tom's fall into the latter category and offers us some good options and some I would pass on. For a bit over $10 we were able to get two sausage, egg and cheese sandwiches made to order along with two large coffees- a bargain and much tastier than the Golden Arches version across the street. The haddock burger was a huge piece of haddock that far outstretched the bun and was a bargain by any calculation. We also shared a cheesecake which had a hint of lemon and was accompanied by a fresh strawberry compote and whipped cream. Both winners. As far as the other things we tried there the chicken salad sandwiches was good but too heavy on the mayo. The turkey sandwich was deli turkey sliced way too thickly. The potato salad was nothing like what you see in the midlatlantic with too much mayo and miracle whip plus green peas. So stick with the fish and breakfast and should should get a decent meal at a good price. read more

Stopped by here after a recommendation from a local business after asking where do the locals eat . They did say it is mostly known for fried food , pizza and subs but as a tourist I have to say we didn't see much of a selection .I wanted to order Tom's short rib sandwich lunch but it was out. That's when I should have left . We had never been here and didn't know how it worked . Counter or table service ? Menus ? A cluster F . My guest ordered a grilled ham and cheese bacon sandwich that came on a sub roll that was baked but the insides were cold including the bacon . We were hungry after driving all day and saving appetite for supper. What a huge disappointment. I just wanted to cry in disgust. I can't speak for the fried food or seafood but the onion rings were not great either . This is where locals eat ? What kind of food are they used to eating ? Sad . The pita was so soggy I could not even pick it up to eat . Was the meat microwaved ? No grill marks. Where's the garnish of onion and garlic ?! I even went up and asked the girl asked the kitchen they said it was in it ?!! What's that even mean ?! Look at the pics no onion. ! After this mess I asked to speak to a manager . There was none and the kitchen staff guy was home very sick . Great . Had to pay out front in the store part . Again no manager there either ?! Who the hell is in charge ?!!!! You teens running a food place with no clue and no one in charge ! What if someone gets sick from the food or there is a food safety issue ! You're putting peoples health in jeopardy especially with seafood ! Let the locals eat this and if you are a tourist skip this joint for sure ! I'd give negative stars if I could . Stayed at the Bluebird next door and asked the friendly staff where the best food in town was. They gave me a list of local eateries and said Tom's mini mart next door was very good. They couldn't have been more right. After driving from Canada the last thing I wanted to do was get back in the car. We found the duo, The Bluebird and Tom's to be a travelers heaven. My wife and I split a clam dinner and it was great and plenty for 2 for $20,00. In the morning I walked over and got 2 sausage egg and cheese breakfast muffins., also great. That was last year. We made it up to Machias yesterday and felt like pizza. Again, not only was their large Supreme covered in the freshest produce, it was covered with sausage and bacon. Not gourmet dining but good old wonderful fresh food cooked to perfection for starving travelers. The large clean rooms at the Bluebird and the great food at Tom's was the reason we returned, as is the beauty of the area and the friendly locals. We will be back! read more

My husband and I ate here in July, 2023. As other reviewers have said, the food and service is great, the prices are reasonable, and the ambiance is very pleasant. All in the back of a gas station! We were staying at the Bluebird Motel next door for one night. We walked over to Tom's for dinner -- a fried clam plate with fries and cole slaw that was enough for the two of us. Then returned for breakfast sandwiches the next morning. All delicious and everyone was very friendly. Thank you Tom's. We highly recommend. read more

I thought I'd give them one more try tonight even though the last couple of meals have been subpar. I guess I was hoping for the fabulous food before the store changed ownership. We had a haddock burger and seafood basket. They were a huge disappointment!!! Horrible fish and greasy fries. I called in an order for a Seafood Platter which is supposed to come with my choice of coleslaw, a roll, or fries. I got fries. I also ordered the daily special of teriyaki and pineapple beef tips. Out of the order the only thing i was even vaguely satisfied by was the egg roll that the beef tips came with. The seafood tasted like it was done in semi old oil, it was extremely overcooked, the fish was bony, the clams were disgusting and slimy, and the beef tips gave my heartburn and made me have to run for the bathroom. Also, after i ordered over the phone the food took longer than the 20 minutes they mentioned. That being said for a convenience store/restaurant this was pretty well kept and clean. That being said i likely will never return here. I am still experiencing gastrointestinal distress and am currently running a fever after having ate the food. read more

Tom's is the best "restaurant" in town... it looks like just a Citgo station but there's a dining area in the back where you can order food and have it served to you. I get their breakfast pizza and it is amazing. I practically live off of the stuff. The pricing is awesome as well, you won't find another place in the area that serves such good food at such a reasonable price. read more

Most people looking for a good casual breakfast or lunch would drive right by this place and not even notice because it looks like a basic convenience store that sells gas, beer, snacks and lottery tickets. However in the back is a lunch counter that puts out some great subs, sandwiches, pizza and even fried seafood. They also serve breakfast which I haven't had but wouldn't bet against. The best evidence that they consistently serve good food is the steady stream of locals, hunters, blue collar workers and retirees who come in at lunch time. One of those places where everyone seems to know everyone else. I've been here a few times as I'm only in the area occasionally for business. The meal options in the area are rather limited, especially if you don't want a typical sit down restaurant with waiter service so Tom's has a been a great find for me. My go to is the steak and cheese. I've also had the club sandwich that was big enough for two people. They also have fantastic bakery options such as cookies and other desert options. On my last visit I bought a couple of chocolate chip cookies. Baked goods at convenience stores are usually hit or miss. These were a home run. I can't wait to try some of their other offerings. If Tom's was in my hometown, I would probably eat there daily. read more

What a great place to go for local flavor, right next door to the Bluebird Motel in Machias on Route 1. Looks like a Citgo station on the outside but the back luncheonette area is new and fresh with lots of seating. Typical diner fare, nothing over the top but fast and affordable. The waitress takes your order at the counter, then brings your food out to you on paper plates with packaged plastic cutlery. Who cares? You're hungry, you're in a hurry and the food is cheap! It's a diner. Brand new bathrooms! Waitress tells us the lights are automatic, the hand dryer too and the toilet flushes automatically. "Honey" she says" that bathroom there does everything but wipe." Swear to god. True story. Love Maine. read more

This is my favorite place for a quick, delicious meal. The food is great, the service is friendly, helpful, and patient, lol. They have great daily specials, and are open every day, except Sunday. I love their fried haddock. I think it's the best in town. It has carryout and eat in., with booths and tables. The food is always good, never had a bad meal in 30 years! read more

For small town living, Tom's has a huge variety of food selections. The prices are reasonable, and the portions are big. They've got something for everyone! I should know because I have a picky eater, that is my daughter :) read more
