We have been getting our car serviced and repaired at Sparg's for years and generally been…read moresatisfied with their work. However on our most recent repair, Sparg's installed an incorrect part and this became apparent later. Sparg's rectified this problem but charged us a substantially higher amount for the re-do work and additional labour not taking into account that we had paid for the initial 'incorrect' work and that it was their mistake. When this was questioned, Chris was extremely rude and aggressive and even refused to discuss the matter or explain their charges to us. We made independent enquiries about the cost of the part and Sparg's had marked up their price by over 50% from cost price! Additionally, when our car was on their premises for weeks awaiting repair, an external part of the car was broken. Sparg's refused to accept responsibility of the broken part despite it being on their premises and under their care. We have had very poor service from Sparg's and of course will not be returning to them. If you choose to go to Sparg's, we recommend that you question their prices as they clearly mark up their prices excessively which is a breach of the Consumers' Guarantees Act. Additionally, the manner in which Sparg's dealt with our complaint was appalling! Customers have a right to know what has been done to their car. Additionally we suggest that you check your invoices carefully. We have discovered several mistakes looking back and been overcharged, but Sparg's has refused to refund our money. A good mechanic is hard to find and Sparg's is certainly not one of them. We strongly suggest that you look elsewhere to find a mechanic to carry out reliable and fair priced work with respectful customer service.

He reassured me that they will provide an excellent service, and will keep me informed of any faults, if any. An hour into the service, Roger called to advise a small fault on the engine was noticed, and that they will only be able to replace the part the next day. A loan car was organized at no extra cost, and my car was ready the next day after work, cleaned and ready to roll another ten thousand kilometers. The whole team at Northcote was easy to work with, and Roger really went out of his way to assist me with my vehicle's service.

Turns out what the failed the car for is not really a problem so I paid the new shop the warrant fees and I got it right there and then. I think these guys are trying to make money by trying to fail the vehicles on anything that looks like it can fail and then quoting massive amounts to get it fixed. Not recommended at all.

They called me and said that it would cost $1800 to replace and up to 4 hours work. The guy went on about what a complicated job it was. Not knowing any better, I foolishly trusted him and said to go ahead. After discussing with my husband, we got another price from Giltraps (sometimes the more expensive option!) and they advised it would be $600-$700 for the genuine pump part plus 2 hours labour - and yes, they did ask the rego to confirm the vehicle type. So my husband went to collect my car from Ponsonby Auto and questioned their price. The guy then showed him a completely different vehicle in which the pump was located deep under the engine and made out that that was the same situation with my car. Complete lie, as the pump is waaay more visible and accessible in my car. Then, because we now knew the pump price, he charged for 8 hours labour!!! Obviously had to work backwards from $1800 and add phantom hours to try and hide the fact he was totally ripping me off! We were accepting that they would add a bit of a margin on the part but how do they justify 8 hours labour? I will NEVER use this company again.

Not only do they offer the most friendly service and advice they are super comprehensive and follow up with you so quickly I was astounded. This is the third time I have been there in two months (my fault not theirs that I had to keep going back) so was no one off. Simply call to book in for a WOF or whatever your heart requires, drop it in pre work and expect a phone call back within a couple of hours with what is wrong a how much it will cost. That cost doesn't change either!!! Unlike some of its competitors. I had my car finished and back within a day every time. I have had an ongoing problem with my key that has already cost me $400 to order a new one from Japan. The place sorting it for me then told me it will cost another $400 to get it hooked up to the cars computer (who knew cars had computers?) This had nothing to do with Ponsonby Automotive but I told them my concerns and they found me a much cheaper solution despite the fact they don't get any $ for it. Onya Grant! Thankfully, my worries were unfounded, as the guys at Bridgestone Select were really great. I arrived just before their 5.30pm closing time and the guy stayed open for an extra half hour just to change my battery, which was so lovely of him. He was really friendly and changed it quickly and efficiently and charged me a fair price, explaining stuff the whole way. I liked it so much that I've booked my WOF in there next week too.

The folks at Maidstone have taken over for my old mechanics that I used and trusted in Grey Lynn…read more Maidstone is located about a block away from the Repco on Great North Road. We had recently purchased a used Honda CR-V and when it was taken to Honda they said it needed $4900 worth of repairs. We are very suspicious that Honda was going over the top in trying to restore the car to factory new conditions and that was impractical and unreasonable in our opinion. We took the car to Maidstone and they were able to look at it quickly and came back with a few of the same repairs Honda was suggesting. In one case they agree with Honda on a repair and getting the part as genuine Honda part. The remainder of the repairs were either cheaper, or they felt were not sensible to perform at this stage. As a result we saved several thousand dollars compared to Honda's repair suggestions. At the end we forgot to get a windshield wiper replaced on the rear of the vehicle and Maidstone gave it to us and didn't charge. They seemed like reputable and honest mechanics who stand behind their work and will make sensible recommendations. We will be taking all of our vehicles to Maidstone moving forward.
