If you come to a place where there's a whole bunch of campervans and gypsies parked on the side of the road, then you've found the spot. I don't know why they come here, perhaps it's a secret meeting place, but anyway the fishing here is OK. Bear in mind that this is still very much in the city, so don't expect a massive haul of fish, however, you might reel in the occasional snapper or trevally.

Ferries run Monday to Friday to coincide with the 9 - 5 work hours so only run for the peak times of 6.55am to 8.30am and 4.05pm until 7.10pm. The wharf itself is in need of an upgrade, but seems to manage it's relatively minor workload sufficiently. The large shed built half way down it is very effective on a cold winters day, and the lack of fences on one side make it a popular spot for local kids to practice their swan dives and back flips.

There are a couple of wharves that I really love on the shore and this is one of my favourites. Stanley Bay is a really lovely area - it's right in the heart of Devonport but almost feels like it's own little area. You feel far from all the stresses of daily life. The Wharf is nestled in a little bay surrounded by stunning trees and cliffs. There is also an awesome view of the city. I love jumping off this wharf. There is plenty of room to sunbathe and chill, and a small building to shelter from the sun in, and jump off if you re so inclined. There are stairs which make it easy to get back up. I don't actually know much about the ferry...but it doesn't come often enough to ruin the wharf jumping. Great spot.

When we visited on a Sunday afternoon, it was very much alive with children, many of whom were practicing to ride their bikes (some with training wheels, many were not) at the adjacent parking lot. It is so named because of the 7 silos that dominate the scenery around the park. They were built and used to store cement, but have now been converted into an art and exhibition center and movie screen for outdoor cinema. How cool is that!

Trip down memory lane aside, Milford Park is still a great spot to bring the kiddies. There is a freshly painted, bright blue playground, toilets, BBQ pits AND the Beach is right next door. Not to mention in Summer there is frequently concerts or outdoor movie screenings. Oh, and for all those runners out there every Wednesday night there is a fun run that leaves from the Milford Cruising Club in the park and goes to Takapuna and back for only $7 ($3 for kids), free drink included!

Answer to (a) is Judges Bay, (b) the easiest option for access is to hit Judges Bay Road in Parnell or you can wander down through Dove Meyer Robinson Park and (c) I would say by the amount of people I have seen here on different occasions that yes it is swimmable. It even has its own pontoon and jetty. Now that's swimmable! Because its cut off from the the ocean itself by the road and bordered on both sides by developments it does feel like a little hideaway. I'm super duper glad I discovered it!

On the one hand they have some really…read morereally cheap fishing gear; all the essentials that are obviously made overseas at a fraction of the cost. This is all good when purchasing hooks, sinkers, line and things like that I guess. However, I bought a reel from here once; It looked very nice, felt nice, and admittedly I knew it wasn't the best quality reel, but I still expected it to last for at least a year. But it completely snapped after about three months. I didn't cry about it, but I was a little disappointed. So I have come to the conclusion that this store is fine for the odd bits and pieces you need in your tackle box, but when it comes to purchasing the proper hardware for your rod you should probably go somewhere else and get sorted.

And since I'm leaning towards the second option, it is millions of years since we've left the water, so there is no need to go back. But when a friend of mine invited me to go fishing, I could not decline, well not for the third time anyway. And how bad could it be drinking beer, catching rays and maybe even snaring a snapper or two... I prepared myself by going fisherman shopping in Milford, a bit of an oxymoron I know, but a necessary task nonetheless. I wouldn't know where real fishermen shop anyway, and Hunts is a great place to get all the gear you need. The owner was on hand to ask me unreasonable questions about what I'm trying to catch, where I'm going to fish and what rod and reel I'll be using. I explained it will be fish, in water and a long stick, but the expression on his face gave the impression he was hoping for a more definitive answer. I settled on a few items, and left looking like something between an American tourist on an African safari and a fly fisherman on a hunting trip in the Amazon. I caught two beauties, and my host none, ah the joys of beginners luck.
