The visitor center is down the road from the actual wildlife refuge- and a wonderful surprise with…read moreall the displays and information about local wildlife and the lands. The woman there was so helpful- she gave us plenty of reading material and marked on a map the highlights of the refuge- including where to spot the nesting bald eagles! They have a taxidermed alligator just inside the door that came from Georgia! A nuisance gator- per the lady! Wonderful photography is displayed from the refuge too! There is a local artist that has displays around DeLand and one is installed off one of the hiking trails too! The center itself is a gem- great learning center and well as information! When you leave the center- turn right and head straight- the paved road turns into gravel and just after the train tracks is the actual refuge! Hours for the center: From November to March, the Visitor Center is open from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM, 7 days/week. From April through October, the Visitor Center is typically open from 8 AM until 4:00 PM during the week. It is closed on weekends.

The half of the restrooms which were open were not well lit; it was pretty dark in there. Had my husband not have been with me, I would have never went in. Not a very safe place at night. I'd recommend waiting and stopping at an exit with a gas station. They do have quite a few snack machines from sodas, to snacks, to even ice cream. This rest area is probably just fine during the daytime, but be extremely careful after dark!

They have a linen exchange and a laundry on site. We could drive to most anything within minutes but most of our days were spent in the heated pool,hot tub or the balcony of our room.
