While restoring a 1904 cottage in Bisbee, we wanted a very special fireplace -- and we were so so lucky to find the nationally acclaimed Top Tread Stairways in nearby Sierra Vista. When we said we wanted a natural wood bench and mantel, preferably mesquite, our fabulous contractor, Attila, researched options. He drove over and met the owner, Clyde, and then told us, "you have to see this place!" We couldn't believe the variety of timber in the Top Tread workshop. We were amazed to find a slab of mesquite wide enough and long enough for both pieces. They finished the wood beautifully and it was ready a week later at a reasonable price. No question - Clyde could be based anywhere in the country and stay busy with the kind of big custom projects he has completed all over. Top Tread Stairways was there when I needed them! We were having our floors replaced including up a curved staircase and I really wanted new balusters put in rather urgently so they could work with the floor people. Top Tread Stairways responded to my request for help by sending Mike, he worked with the flooring guy, helped me select balusters that would look nice, keeping the original railing, and it turned out beautifully. Seems odd to review a company that is based in Rio Linda but these guys did such an amazing job on a set of stairs that I had to give them props. A company I was doing some consulting for was searching high and low for a stair company locally. They ran into the same issue with stair contractors as they did with the rest of the contractors they tried to do business with. They all seemed too busy to deal with them or if they did bother to call them back (eventually) they were so expensive they were not affordable. Top tread was a recommendation from one of the contractors on the job. They came down with a simply presented picture book portfolio of beautifully hand make stairs. I'm talking old world type of work. They do steel and wood stairs with a variety of rail systems. Not only were these guys a complete joy to work with, polite, clean, respectful their work was exquisite. I cant think of any other way to describe how nice their work was. Anyway, bottom line if you need stairs built, repaired or redesigned these guys are professional, trustworthy and affordable. read more

We had Clyde out to look at our carpeted stairwell that was in fashion in the 80's. Clyde had great suggestions and put in beautiful new hardwood cherry stairs & I tiled under each tread. I thought we had a somewhat complicated project of adding a new staircase to unused living space in our third story home since I had spoken to a few contractors. However, when we met Clyde, our concerns were laid to rest. Clyde created a most elegant staircase that matched our existing staircase in the other part of our home. I wasn't happy with any of my bids from other stair companies when I happened to run across Clyde at Top Thread Stair Company. Clyde came out to the job site and explained they typically build the stairs in their shop with the wood of my choice and then come out and install the completed staircase. I found out after talking to Clyde that this method is truly old world style craftsmanship. The completed staircase was truly a work of art. Hardwood beech, built square and true in Clyde's shop. My staircase arrived on schedule, complete with a protective construction "wrap", that protected the beautiful wood from scuffs and dings until building construction was finished. The bottom line is, Top Tread Stairways offers old world craftmanship at reasonable prices on time. I never write ratings, but I was so entirely pleased with the service from Clyde Martin of Top Tread, that I had to say something. I am way up in Healdsburg with a remodel, and searched the entire bay area for a recommendation for my staircase and banister on Yelp. when I saw the positive ratings, I called Clyde. He was immediately receptive, although he is way out of my area and needed a travel charge (built into the bill), which was fine. He did an absolutely perfect job. I showed him a photo of my concept, and he came up with JUST what I wanted - a beautiful design of iron rails and wood banister. Then we went back and forth on over 50 designs for the newell post, and he nailed it! He was on time, made arrangements around my schedule, finished perfectly, even delayed part of the installation so it wouldn't be damaged by movers. Top Tread Stairways has upgraded my old and beaten staircase by replacing all visible parts with new, custom-designed skirts, treads, posts, balusters and handrails. The results are spectacular. The newly built staircase is clearly the most beautiful piece in our home, and I'm sure that it has more than paid for itself in resale value. Clyde has created a smooth, well managed process that for me, the home owner, could not have been easier. Clyde is a nice, gracious, patient and well-mannered gentleman. He visited our home and demonstrated great patience in explaining all upgrade options to my wife and me. He brought photographs and catalogs to educate us on the choices we need to make, and expertly guided us through the process of choosing wood types, railing profile, newels, and treads. I felt at ease with Clyde's comprehensive knowledge of the various options and his thoughtful recommendations of what would work best in our home. When the custom materials arrived, Clyde's associate Paul started the job in our home. Paul is a highly skilled craftsman and also a very kind gentleman. He carefully tented the work area to protect the rest of the house, and created pathways for us to go around the work site. I did not realize how much work and skilled craftsmanship is involved in such a project. Paul worked very long days, from morning until late evening, and consulted with us frequently to make sure we are satisfied with his work. Throughout the project Paul spared no effort in making sure every fine detail is executed to perfection. For example, we specified that the staircase stain color and glazing should match previously-built custom cabinets in our home. This is would be a tall order for any craftsman due to variations of wood tones and the years that passed since my custom cabinets were built. Paul assured me he can do it. He ordered custom-matched stain, and accompanied me to the cabinet shop that built my cabinets to receive their nod of approval that the stain indeed matches their work. Paul later contacted the cabinet shop again to ensure he was using the same finishing technique they used on my cabinets. The results are spectacular. The finished staircase matches my cabinets, and is an object of beauty in its own right. I would highly recommend Top Tread Stairways for their kindness, expertise, and attention to details. read more
