The Teepee where the GMO seminar was held

(This is a review of an event held at the Community Club) Last weekend my GF suggested we attend the annual Topanga Earth Day Festival (held on 4-20, an appropriate date for this event IMHO) to check out an anti-GMO seminar being held there. And before I could conjure up a lame excuse, she mentioned we could hit the Canyon Bistro afterward - a well-calculated move and an offer she knew I couldn't pass up. Well played, GF; Well played. Let me say up front that even though they're no longer in vogue and the right wing media endlessly denigrates them, I actually like hippies. Always have, really. Sure, some of them still think macramé is hip and actually believe some of that New Age shit, but they're all essentially harmless, (extremely) mellow people. I mean, what's really to hate about a group of folks who promote world peace, a clean environment, and free love (and ganja) for all? (from the unmistakable aromas that were hitting my nostrils, there was plenty of "love" to go around that day). Hell, if they want to burn incense and worship crystals between bong hits, let them I say; Who really gets hurt? Live and let live. Before we began our journey to Woodstock, my GF warned me that parking was probably going to be crazy (like many of my gender, I have a tendency to stress about parking), but I was in an oddly mellow mood and said nary a word about parking nor traffic the whole trip over. Instead, I meditated on the Côtes du Rhône and truffled frites that awaited me later in the day. However, she was right: The parking was in fact, crazy, but the sun god smiled upon us and someone was pulling out of a spot right across from the entrance as we drove up. A good omen, I felt. Upon arrival, the smiling staff stamp your arm with the face of the sun goddess (or some such icon) and hand you a free granola bar (I expected no less). The festival itself occupies an oval area about the size of a football field, with a stage at one end that alternated between live music (mostly folk / classic rock) and various speakers. When we arrived, there was a noticeably mellow dude on stage rapping about edible landscaping in a distinct Jeff Spicoli dialect. I was obviously deep in the nest now. Our seminar was scheduled to start shortly after our arrival, so we rushed around looking for a building, but found none. Instead, we noticed that there were large teepees scattered around with signs in front of them, and sure enough, our seminar was being held in teepee #2. We stepped inside and flopped ourselves down on the grass floor. No peace (or other) pipes were passed, but a pleasant woman gave all of us a power point presentation on her laptop. Monsanto is obviously not very popular with this crowd (and from what I've read about that company, for good reason). After the seminar, we strolled around for a bit to check out all the sights and sounds and get our Zen on. The were vendors selling crafts, jewelry, home spun wools, hemp woven clothes, crystals and Buddhas, solar panels, parabolic solar heaters, and of course tie died tee shirts (yes, I purchased one). There was also a concession handing out free hula hoops for people to get their groove on, and in the middle of the lawn, a huge paper mache Earth you could give a big hug and pose next to for a picture. Out in front of the main stage there were people dancing, and the crowd had set up their own tents in a circle around it, planning to make a day of it apparently. On the upper level above the stage, there were a small group of tents I called the "Hippie Food Court", with various vendors selling vegan salads and baked goods, and "muscle pressed" lemonade. There was also another smaller music venue, with a band playing live jazz that was quite crowded. Apparently these hippies have good taste (ie: my taste) in music. All in all, I found it - to quote Cheech and Chong - Far out and solid. An interesting (if not excessively mellow) day. Worth attending to soak up some California counter culture before you grab some groovy eats at the Canyon Bistro. No doubt someone like Bill O'Reilly would be in the depths of hell here, but I can think of worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon. Dig? Peace out, brother; Live long and prosper.

The playground here is amazing. You have gorgeous views and the kids have a blast with all the different varieties of things to do. If you want to enjoy a park that is surrounded by beauty this is it.

My best friend and I spent a weekend here, and I have never felt more divine--like the highest version of myself. There is a magic woven into this place, and Bill's kindness feels less like hospitality and more like being welcomed by an old friend. These are the moments I will never forget: singing in the copper tub beneath the stars and full moon, sipping wine until the water turned cold; twirling barefoot through the gardens with my best friend in disbelief that I was lucky enough to stay somewhere so breathtakingly beautiful. The hummingbirds, frogs, and peacocks became companions, and the outside world felt wonderfully far away. I stayed awake nearly all night before leaving because I couldn't bear for it to end. And now, weeks later, I realize something shifted in me. Mermaid Mountain reminded me that I am worthy of opulent and extraordinary experiences. The property is also home to a beautiful butterfly garden lovingly tended by Sergio, who shares his knowledge and offers plants for guests to take home. I brought a few back to my own garden, and now butterflies visit me there, reminding me that places can continue to nourish us long after we've left them. We sat outside surrounded by greenery, large umbrellas, and plenty of natural light. Even with a full patio, it still felt comfortable for a long lunch and conversation. I ordered the Pan Seared Salmon with a pistachio and coconut crust, roasted carrots, and cumin vinaigrette. The salmon was cooked beautifully, and I loved the texture from the crust. The roasted carrots added a little sweetness without competing with the fish. My friend had a salad topped with grilled chicken, and we shared an order of fries. I also had one of their cocktails, which arrived with an orchid garnish and felt perfect for an afternoon on the patio. Service was attentive throughout lunch, and we never felt hurried even as the patio stayed busy. Casaléna also offers valet, which I appreciated given the Ventura Boulevard location. I'm glad I finally checked it out. I loved it enough that I ended up coming back for dinner for a birthday celebration, which probably says more than anything else I could add.

We decided to drive around to see if there were any possible wedding venues that offer an all outdoor space that was rustic, charming, but still classy and elegant. We drove by a sign that said Kelly Gulch, Googled it, saw great photos on their website, called Sally up, and within a few hours was able to stop by to meet her and to view the farm. It was just what we wanted. We reserved it almost immediately and had the best wedding almost exactly a year later, during Memorial Day weekend 2015. Here are things we loved about Kelly Gulch: * Sally's great. She feels more like your wedding mom than a venue coordinator. It helps that she owns and lives on the property because you can feel the love she pours into it. Sally added so many great improvements to the property during the time we reserved and actually had the wedding. Every time we came back to visit, there was something new! * The venue is gorgeous--just look at the photos! It's small enough to create an intimate feel, but large enough to accommodate up to 200 guests. There are lots of trees, Sally's cute farm animals, a beautiful barn, a dressing studio, writing studio, an area for enclosed fire pits, a large parking lot, stunning wood bridges, and lots of other areas for great photo ops. * It's not a wedding mill. Other venues we looked at were very strict--you must show up at x time, clean up by x time, and felt very business-like. That wasn't the vibe we wanted, and we're so grateful we found Kelly Gulch. Sally let us do things like drop off our alcohol a week in advance and flowers the day before to store in her cool laundry area. Having that flexibility really came in handy, especially if you are having a primarily DIY wedding like we did. * Sally doesn't nickel and dime you. If she has something available, she will offer it to you and not charge you for it. For example, she has some tables, signs, drink dispensers, wagons, etc. that we were able to use in our wedding, which helped reduce costs. * I'm not sure if prices have gone up, but Kelly Gulch was reasonable compared to other venues we looked at. We really can't recommend Kelly Gulch and Sally enough. We had a dream wedding on a reasonable budget, and it couldn't have been done without first finding an amazing venue. Our one piece of advice to future brides and grooms is to order more bathroom stalls--at least 4--regardless of your guest count! Pay more if you have to--you won't regret it. We only had two, and I think we served way too many good drinks because there was ALWAYS a line at the restrooms. When one of the two stalls broke down toward the end of the night, that just made things worse. Our lesson learned is your lesson gained!
