The main exhibit right now is called Nordbor, and chronicles the lifestyles of rich and poor people from 1500 to 2000. Videos and artifacts are used to tell the stories from the different eras across three levels, on themes like family, the city, work, etc. There is a really nice presentation of photographs spanning from the 1800s to 2000 as well. You could easily spend 4 hours or more here, if you took the time to watch every video and read about each item on display. Tickets are approx. $170 for adults. There is an accessible entrance, and an elevator to get to each floor. There are also lockers for coats and bags on the Lower level, by the restrooms. The museum shop on the lower level is worth a stop as well. There is no admission required for visiting the museum shop or restaurant.

We…read morefinally decided to check out Skansen two days before midsummer, mildly apprehensive about the entrance fee since we still couldn't figure out what Skansen was about, but we hoped there would be midsummer decorations. There was confusion about the train route and after speaking to the gate agent, skipped the extra fee for the train to go up the hill. We were here to walk. At first glance, Skansen is a living museum of how things were done in the olden days, replete with actors. There were no midsummer decorations, though I was told the main thing was the may pole, which we had already seen erected on another archipelago. A delightful surprise was the animal farm (with an almost free roaming peacock) and the Nordic animal zoo. This accidental stumble on animals (bears, bison, reindeer, etc) was my favorite part of Skansen. Overall a neat place to spend an afternoon. Would recommend!

Not that you'll find crazy rides but there's entertainment for kids with some rides, plus not to mention the lounging areas, the animals, and so much more. Came here walking from our hotel , you can catch a bus, and it was just beautiful. I highly recommend a visit. This can be an almost all day thing or just come for a few hours like we didn't.

The Vasa Museum on Djurgården in Stockholm is a 15-20 minute walk from the harbor. This is where the famous warship Vasa is, the ship that sank after a 14-15 hundred meters on its maiden voyage. August 10, 1628 and was raised from the bottom in 1961 after 333 years underwater. The ship is the world's best preserved 17th century ship and consists of about 98% original parts. You walk over several floors and can admire and speculate about how they could make such a ship at that time. You get the whole story by looking and reading the information plates. They have had a copy of the ship made in 1:10, which took 5 years and 12,000 working hours, while the original took about 2 years, started in 1626 and was finished in 1628. The museum has several levels and well layout and organized. Staff are everywhere and friendly. On top level, there is a restaurant overlook the city. The view is just amazingly breathtaking, service is great. Foods and drinks are also good too. On street level, before you leave the museum, a small but plenty of variety of shops for shopping. There are several exhibitions throughout the year and they're all fantastic. Love this museum.

Free admission!…read more Exhibits on Vikings, Swedish history & a whole room of Viking treasures & plunder ( aka the Gold Room ) There are displays that detail out the Viking way of life from what they wore to their class system, how much silver each "class" was worth, how they fed themselves, traveled around in their boats & all kinds of great insight The Gold Room showcased all kinds of silver & gold in bars, nuggets and the detailed patterns on their jewelry goldwork is absolutely mind-blowing! How did they get those tiny, patterns carved into the gold, without any machinery! Well worth a visit!!

There were five elements to see at the Royal Palace that were still open during our visit…read more The changing of the guard/marching band on Wednesday at 12:15pm was free. We arrived about half an hour to secure our spot. The event lasted for half an hour and was a mixture of ceremony, band marching and playing and some history about the tradition and the regiment of guards. The highlight of our visit. One tip that worked for us was to split the visit of the palace itself and the changing of the guards. When we visited the rest of the palace the day after there just wasn't that many people. The chapel was free to enter and was located on the second floor opposite of the entrance to the treasury. It wasn't as large or ornate as other palace chapels we've visited. The treasury showcased many crowns, scepters, keys, orbs and other objects used by past and current royals. Placards in English was available just after the ticket desk. We saw everything in around 20 minutes. Tre Kronor museum was located underground in the remains of the previous palace that burned down in 1697. The artifacts were limited but the signage throughout was helpful in context. Near the end was a movie about the fire and construction of the replacement palace. The Royal Apartments had the first and second floors open for viewing but not all of it. Most rooms were darkened for preservation but the White Sea Room (last available room on the second floor) was our favorite as it was so much more inviting. Since the tour deadends on each floor, one has to backtrack the same way to exit. Next time we're in town we'll go to Drottingham and compare palaces.

They also have a big section dedicated to Swedish design which was super cool too. We also had a bite in their cafe. The basement floor also has many bathroom stalls so you don't have to wait. We visited quite a few museums in our trip and this was definitely one of the best ones.

It is one of Europe's oldest museums, dating back to 1792 (though this building did not house the collections until 1866). Tickets to the permanent collections are free. When I visited, the temporary exhibit was not something that appealed so I did not purchase a ticket for that one. Most of the paintings are Swedish artists I have never heard of but here and there were some names that I did recognize. Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet and Paul Cézanne. There is a large Asian exhibit, a display of jewelry (brooches, bracelets and rings), pocketwatches, and much more. Expect two hours at minimum, a half day if you truly want to see everything.
