On a whim, I took the advice of an acquaintance and signed up for a weekend workshop at Touchstone. Our focus was Ceramics and Keith Hershberger was our instructor. The Clay Studio is part open air and partially enclosed. The wheel throwing area, slab roller, building and wedging tables, etc. are all located in the covered deck, open air studio sitting next to the woods and stream. So peaceful. What a great space to create new and wonderful things. The kilns, glazing area, etc. are located in the attached building area. At night, the open air studio can get a bit 'buggy' so bring your bug spray. But everything else about this space is fabulous. My sister and I stayed in the Campbell House Residence -- this is a dorm type of lodging -- two people to a room -- plenty of space and four rooms to a floor. All rooms share two full baths. Not sure if all the rooms were full, but the accommodations were clean, newer and very reasonably priced. There are also several cabins on the property -- not sure what these look like -- but certainly another option. I even met a couple of people that decided to camp - this is another option and there is a bath house facility for these campers!! The dining hall is new and provides plenty of space to eat inside or outside on the various decks. I highly recommend the meal plan -- first because it is reasonably priced, second because you will get a chance to network with lots of other artists -- but mostly because the food is fabulous!! Enchilada night with apple cobbler and ice cream for dessert -- yum, yum!! I was amazed at what we were able to accomplish in such a short period of time. Our instructor and studio assistance (LEE!!!!!! you are the bomb!!) were incredibly flexible and very mindful of our time to make sure we completed/learned everything we set out to do. I had signed up and paid for a class here. Scheduled my only vacation of the year. The year before I had taken a class and had a wonderful time. This year after I paid several non refundable fees and very shortly before the class was to begin, I was told that they were cancelling the class,basically because it wasn't making a profit (they are a non profit organization. They wasted the time of the artists who was to teach the class and royally messed up the plans of us who were to take the class. I have had to pay a considerable amount in non refundable fees because of their actions. Bottom line: if you are an artist who wants to teach here don't consider it. They do not value your time. If you want to take a class here, don't. You could lose your entire vacation the way I did, and it's going on three weeks and I STILL haven't gotten my refund from them ( over $1300)! read more
