Okay, so at this point, I'm a bit disenchanted by all the stupid little touristy things or severely overpriced touristy things... And, this falls in the former category. It's cool that a tree can be so damn big that you can poke a big hole in it and kill it so you can charge cars $5 to drive through it. Then again, this site to see is really just that--you wait in line and then drive through a tree that assuredly is on its way to death. Bottom line: Skip it. read more

Privately owned, you'll have to shell out $5 for one car up to four people. Our mini-van had two adults and four children, and the woman in the booth eyed our car suspiciously and when we told her how many people we had, she hesitated like she was considering charging us more. There's no indication as to what the price jumps to if you violate the four person max, but thankfully the woman decided she didn't want to calculate the cost and let us get away with the minimun $5 charge. The drive-thru tree is just that: a big tree with a narrow tunnel going through its center. Warning: This is not for wide vehicles. I was amazed that our minivan made it through. The whole experience takes just under three minutes to complete, so you might wonder why you had to pay $5. There is nothing else here but a beat-up picnic table. As we were leaving we noticed some visitors had parked their car and were walking to the tree. I guess as long as you don't take your car, you can get in free! Weird. read more

I took my friends here to check this out on a side trip from where we were camping at Patrick's Point. I grew up in CA and further South there are much more impressive Redwoods and an even more impressive drive through tree. This seemed to me like a very touristy thing to do ...but the ladies loved it and I thought "why not". They make a killing at $5 a car! :) For those who haven't driven through a tree it is cheap amusement I suppose. read more

This is a fun little stop. For $5 you can drive through the tree as many times as you want. There's nothing much to do here though. There was another place we went to in Leggett which charged $10, but that facility was a little bigger with bathrooms and giftshop. And that tree was a bit narrower. At either of the places, we need to close the mirror of our Toyota Sienna and just barely squeeze though. read more

People say a lot about the sadness of this- I think it's okay. At the time the hole in this poor tree was cut, there was no shortage of these majestic beauties. There is actually an interesting backstory to this particular tree- have a quick google search if you are concerned. I think the $5 is a simple way to keep mild upkeep on the location as well as keep people from just using it as a turnaround or something. As long as you are ONLY expecting a photo-op. You will get exactly what you are looking for. We were happy to drop the $5 in the box and get a quick pic. My daughter thought it was pretty funny we were driving through a tree and it was a great opportunity to explain a little about the history of logging. read more

Yes the tree was cut for this purpose many years ago- the man who owned the property at the time had to create a business he could run while caring for his dying wife and this was a way he could use his own isolated property to do so- Redwoods are one of the most resilient trees and this tree is still very much alive- there is plenty of wood, bark, etc on either side to create the necessary photosynthesis- okay now that that is out of the way lets get to the tree itself- it seems small for a vehicle that's true but an F350 made it through and took a pic so basically anything else you're driving will make it- some of you probably won't- I've seen people in parking lots that can't seem to park straight either... this attraction is not for you if you are one of these people- the lady at the front is very knowledgable of the history of the entire area- she is such s gem it's worth 5 dollars just to have the opportunity to talk to her- and she is excited and eager to share- spunky and sweet with a bit of Betty White in her- also the restroom in the log is so adorable it's ridiculous :) read more

So we drive a 2006 Honda Ridgeline. We stopped (July 20, 2015) at the gate to pay our $5, the lady says to fold our mirrors in before driving tnrough the tree but what she DIDN'T tell us is that we wouldn't fit through the damn thing!!! I got out to take pics of my husband driving the truck through (was going to get back in and drive through, again, so I could do it. There was no line). All of a sudden there's a terrible screeching noise. The truck had made it about 2/3 of the way in before he ran out of room. And yes, he was driving VERY slowly!! We now have probably $1000 in damage on our front passenger fender. Not too happy about this!! As we were leaving, several trucks LARGER than us had paid and were on their way up. We flagged them and told them they wouldn't fit, that we didn't fit and in fact now had a damaged truck. They weren't impressed they had paid only to discover they weren't going to fit. Wouldn't recommend this unless you drive a car or smaller SUV, maybe a very small truck, but not a Ridgeline, and certainly not a Ford F150 or larger, Dodge Ram, etc. This place should know by looking which vehicles will not fit and politely turn them away. Actually, wouldn't recommend this AT ALL, to anyone. You pay $5, drive up the road a bit to a cul-de-sac, drive through a tree with a man-made hole and leave. We were there maybe 10 minutes. In that time they made $5 each from us, the 2 cars in front of us, AND the 4 trucks we flagged on our way out. That's $35 in less than 15 minutes, and 5 trucks that wouldn't fit. This was truly worth the visit! While not as grand as the Chandelier tree to the South this visit offers you the opportunity to actually get out and look around for a minute or two before being pushed through so the next car can makes it's way through. The property is run by a very lovely, kind and knowledgeable woman who will gladly tell you all you need about this tree and all those like it. Full of friendly and insightful information she was as interesting as driving through the tree itself. read more

5 bucks worth of fun in ten minutes. It's silly, pointless and totally kitsch, but we laughed and took pictures. Well worth the stop.

A cheeseburger and milkshake from In 'n Out. About 3 gallons of life saving water. 2 delicious iced coffee's from Starbucks. You may find yourself asking what all these things have in common. Well let me tell you. These are all things which, much unlike this scam, are actually worth spending $5 on. I came across this rip-off of a tourist attraction with a group of friends on our spring break camping trip, and of course, we couldn't pass up this once in a lifetime opportunity. "WHAT?!" We exclaimed, driving through a REAL redwood tree! Just shut up and take me money! Right?! Wrong. After paying the arbitrary $10 (we had 2 cars) we began our promised life-changing adventure with open minds and excited hearts. But the flame of discovery was quickly snuffed out when we turned the corner and saw what may be regarded as the saddest tree on the Northern California coast. Well, we had already paid our dues, so we charged onward, feigning excitement for what turned out to be the most harrowing drive of our currently 1200+ mile road trip. My car (a toyota Venza) BARELY made it through, and I was relieved to be done with this disappointing experience when I turned around and alas! The other car (a Lexus GX series) was in no way, shape, or form going to make it through. So I had to pull around and drive the rest of our group through this terrible tourist attraction. If I had really wanted to get my money's worth for this experience I would have to drop out of school, quit my jobs, and spend the rest of eternity squeezing my mid sized SUV trough the saddest tree that ever was. But not all stories end so dimly. It is now widely regarded as the disappointment of our road trip, and never fails to give us a good chuckle. read more

I'm a chump for this kind of thing. Show me a giant fiberglass whatever by the side of the road & I'm on it like stink on a wet dog. My girlfriend & I rode through it on our motorcycles for photo ops (watch the really tight uphill corner on the way up) & found it worthy. Just crap out the five-spot & do it. read more
